Tick throws were cheap back then though in SF2. They were pretty much inescapable in some cases right? Throws were generally not done in the arcades I used to go to. Every once in a while someone would show up and do tick throws and they were in real danger of getting their ass kicked, especially if they weren't regulars in that arcade

I always found ST dictator fascinating because of things like this. For those who don't know, he's a character who's only real reversal requires full super meter and a charge. This means that he has multiple matchups where he's just DEAD if the opponent gets a KD or a throw without meter, and if memory servers one matchup (boxer) where he's dead either way because he can cross you up before the tick throw. And yet, he's playable. Really really interesting to watch high level dictator play knowing all of this.

Something else to note is how the damage is "reduced" when teching throws. I don't know when it stopped but in the first instances of SF2, you took the full damage of the throw, then the game gave you back the health you kept with the tech. This means that if you were in range of a full damage throw kill, teching was useless since your life went to zero before the game giving it back, therefore considering it a lose.

I remember being a child at many arcades learning the ropes of sf2 and realized a lot of these guys were being big babies about peoples tactics i mean it's a fighting game you wanna win don't ya? I used to get a lot of hate but that never stopped me from wanting to get better by learning to counter whatever "cheese" was thrown at me. I always felt if you weren't ready to fight out of a corner or control yourself from getting sweeped multiple times or be patient on the get up so you don't get multiple grabbed you didnt deserve a chance to win in the first place. I used to hear I'm cheap but as time went on and games evolved i was acknowledged as one of the best in my hood and other arcades. Nothing beat facing off against real rivals not babies who really didn't take the time to practice the craft learning the "footsie" game frames and all that jazz. People who used to complain about that stuff were just looking for excuses not to get better or learn from the mistakes they repeatedly make. I mean why should i fight the way you want to fight? That's not how matches are controlled anything to take your opponent out of his/her element.

Another cheap thing about the sf2 turbo throw teching is that if the full damage of a throw could kill you cant soften the throw to halve the damage taken. Another thing, about trying to reversal in ST is that the turbo interval skips certain frames, if that frame overlaps with the 1 frame reversal window your inputs wont be registered, in other words it can be impossible to do a reversal even if u have the perfect execution.

@naejimba Жыл бұрын
@@syrelian , keep in mind, pianoing your buttons is also a thing... that gives you up to 6 chances (both press and release) that cover a number of frames. I'm not saying it is easy, but this is another thing that when added together eliminates the randomness in a reversal. Typically on a throw you have at least two buttons, so that would be four chances. So another example with random windows for special inputs (9-14 frames if I remember correctly) it will ALWAYS be 9-14 frames... so if you are getting your special out in 9 frames you can do it consistently. If that makes sense. it's not like one time it will be 7-12 frames and another it could be 9-14... so there is a minimum value that will always get the move out.

I grew up in the hood, but played downtown. oh, the ignorance; I learned basic three-hit combos and was accused of being "cheap" because the local fools didn't know words and had zero technique. as for now, I thoroughly enjoy the art of war that happens between today's masters. SFV logic, and game play is based on throwing. So, I always expect people are going to throw on almost every close situation. Also you can press throw not on time (a bit late) and still tech it. That's good because human reaction isn't that fast. But if you press a button, you are done, it's too late, you will be thrown no matter how fast is your light jab. Also this applies the other way around. If you missed a throw, usually your opponent are going to press a bottom when they see you missing it. But the trick is, if you press throw multiple times, you have a lot of chances to hit the throw after the first is missed, because the bottom they pressed afterwards isn't on time against a throw, but if they press throw too, you both are going to repel each other as usual. I my opinion everything could be just fine if throws were less strong. It ridiculously reduce the HP bar. More than some specials...

This was only true in WW. Every game from CE onwards had reversals added and then ST added techs. It's just that ST's techs would still result in you losing some positioning and taking a bit of damage to reward the aggressor for putting you on the defensive. This is something that a lot of players still feel should be in SF. Daigo's talked about how he thinks having 100% consequence-free tech options is ultimately bad for the game.

Another thing too that makes throw loops so crazy is if you're making a normal meaty into the throw, eg. dhalsim's cr.lk or boxer's cr.mk, those normals have many active frames, so it is not very easy to know when you are free and ready to throw back. That's on top of if they're even GOING to grab. If you're a character with crappy grab range and/or no reversal, gooood luck.

Very interesting insight into throws. I never thought they were necessarily cheap myself but that they did an excessive amount damage, not just in sf. I feel like if throws only accumulated stun points, they would be less "cheap" and better accepted. Thatd also be an interesting dynamic change, especially in competitive. Gootecks and Mike Ross actually touched on that in quite some detail in one of their excellent adventures episodes some time ago.

I feel like this misses one big point, which is that throws being stronger also made getting in more rewarding. This was extremely important for a game like ST where zoning is so incredibly strong. We're talking about a game where Zangief's SPD had huge range and a 1f start-up (un-jumpable), but he's still bottom tier because he has such an insanely difficult time getting/staying in in most match-ups. If you added SF3-style neutral throw techs to ST, it would instantly make top/high tier zoners like O. Sagat, Ryu, Deejay, Guile, etc even stronger. Stronger throws also punish you for having worse neutral, so failing an anti-air or losing a footsie war even if you block is way more dangerous than it is in newer games where you have safer defensive options. This makes the neutral less forgiving, which a lot of high level players prefer. In newer games, you can fuck up a lot more in neutral and still come out okay because blocking/teching are much safer options due to how much weaker chip/grabs are. Older games forced a tighter, more active neutral for this reason, since even small positioning mistakes could be punished harshly. I feel like a lot of older scrubs will use this video to justify their dumb mentality because this video doesn't really fully explain why these mechanics ended up being necessary for those games for the most part (and based on the comments so far, that's exactly what's happening) -- outside of WW where there was legitimately no counter once you were in the situation. Hell, some modern games like KoF and Guilty Gear still use the one-button option-select style of grab. Also, to people complaining about grabs, nerfing throws would be like allowing goal-tending in the NBA to make things easier for the defenders. It would ruin the game. The idea is your defense shouldn't allow the enemy team into scoring range to begin with.
@TheoryFighter

I will say, even though I do think it's an oversight me not presenting the strength of zoning in ST (it was assumed knowledge) regardless of the information presented people will use it to justify daft opinions and there are enough comments on here saying "just tech the throw", in a game where you can only soften them as evidence. I considered adding in bits about GG but it felt largely irrelevant due to the amount of defensive options you have against them.

My local arcade as a kid played with no throws, usually if somebody accidentally did a throw they'd let the other person get one back and then reset. Kind of funny really how these rules came about but if you didn't follow those rules then nobody would play you and it basically became impossible to play on the machine because people would be crowding it and they wouldn't accept playing you. You'd maybe get to play but you'd do it alone which is very lonely so peer pressure played a part in following that rule.
