Once you combine them, you're effectively giving the church guns and the right to legally use them. As a Christian, I strive to live and love like Jesus. These Christian Nationalists are chasing after power, something Jesus never did. Jesus did not complain about Roman rule. He did not try to 'make Israel great again.' He did not wage culture wars in the area where he lived. He loved, healed, forgave, and testified to who he was. He didn't force anyone to believe him. In fact, when the rich young ruler asked him how to attain eternal life, and Jesus told him to sell all he has and give it to the poor, the man walked away sad, and Jesus did not chase after him. Jesus didn't promote or 'sell' himself but humbly traveled the country ministering to others as he went. He did not look down on sinners or those marginalized by society. Christian Nationalists have lost sight of this Jesus--the biblical Jesus--as they misuse him to acquire political and cultural power.

Some of them were. But they were very specific about a seperation between church and state. The English church was controlled by the king and in France while officially Catholic the king had a lot of power over it too and the church therefore also gave those kings the divine right to rule. Rebelling against the king wasn't just rejecting a ruler, it was rejecting the word of god. However the founders kind of embraced that. They indeed rejected the rule of god in government entirely and for both ideological and practical reasons wanted the new country to be based on laws founded in reason rather than faith.

The US was largely Christian but a very wide variety of demoninations. From Catholics from France and England, to the Puritans of New England and the evangelical slave owners. The book "Mary Magdalene Revealed" by Meggan Watterson is getting popular. Talks about the gospel of Mary Magdalene, Jesus's female disciple. It talks about God is within and it's our duty to enjoy life, not focus solely on sin and shame. I still think church and state need to be divided, as our founders did, but I wonder what his opinion is of the woman's part of the Bible that was ordered destroyed around the 4th century... The US was founded on the ideals of the enlightement and reason. The US rejected religion and politics, not actually church specifically. The idea behind the US is that it's a nation of laws made based on reason and compromise rather than by power and faith. At the time the divine right to rule was very strong though also under attack and the US revolution was a big part of that attack though the ultimate culmination was arguably the French revolution. It was a very specific rejection of divine right to rule.

The thing is focusing on sin and shaming people for it is how you control them. Focusing on lust allows you to control woman and focusing on laziness allows you to control workers. If people think of themselves as sinful they won't make demands for a better life. If overcoming shame is no longer pushed onto people then they also have less reason to worship the elite. Any cult will tell you the main way to control people is to make them distrust not just people outside the cult but also themselves. That they are lazy, lust filled, wrathful or whatever other sin fits the narrative. That they don't trust their own judgement and that they need you to show them the way. How easily someone is controlled is mostly linked to their self-esteem. Someone with high self-esteem is hard to control cause they will push back if something doesn't make sense to them or seems morally wrong. People with low self-esteem though don't trust their own judgement so they will assume someone knows better without thinking of why cause they don't trust their own thoughts. It's important not to confuse self-esteem with arrogance. Arrogance is born from low self-esteem where you try to overcompensate. Critical thinking is a skill that you need to learn that requires high self-esteem. If you have low self-esteem you let someone else do the thinking for you and then you cling to that belief cause that's the truth and you don't know what to believe otherwise.

Religion strives to teach good logic and morals, but I think open communication and accountability through tech and gentle coaching works just as well. No strings attached to that logic, like the biggest carrot and stick of heaven and Hell. Adults should be capable of making good moral decisions without all that. But people should be free to do that too.
