I love when I am validated on my way of parenting. I’ve been shamed for being open with my kids (my mom says I need to stop) but I need to be the one giving the info-not the internet or their friends. I will never tell them their bodies are gross and will always be there to talk about their questions.

You're mother needs to butt out unless there is something that is abusive or very dangerous that you are doing when raising your kids. A difference of opinion that many people have is not a reason for her to give unsolicited advice n then be all offended when you don't take it or eventually get annoyed when she doesn't pick up th signs that you are getting irritated. She had her chance to raise kids the way she wanted n if she did a decent job she should trust that you will too. There is no perfect recipe and the result are never guaranteed as eventually people ha e free will. Trust in yourself. The fact that you even listen to Johns show tells me you are already doing many things right

Our mothers think they know it all hey.. when you’re an adult it’s so hard to communicate to “stay out of as you obviously don’t think I’m capable” in a loving and respectful way.

I’ve been using “Is that fair?” and “How can I help?” in my daily life. Both phrases serve a specific purpose and are extremely helpful. I use the first one when I sense resistance because it gives whoever I’m talking to the opportunity to give me feedback if they are uncomfortable or confront their resistance. I use the second phrase with passive aggressive people in particular. It puts the responsibility on them to express themselves constructively.

This is valuable. Prople often say you need to go to therapy, but they don't share HOW to go or what to expect. Knowing what to expect gives more reassurance to continue with the healing process and not get discouraged when the first couple of sessions do not go so well

Dr. Delony, I commend you for keeping devices out of your children’s hands! My family has suffered bad consequences at all levels of ages because of it! My house has rules about devices and the rules are enforced. Guess what?! My visitors always look forward to coming back to visit!

When I was 14 my friend handed me a condom thinking it was funny because he found out I liked this boy.i took it put it in my pocket. Thought nothing of it. Later I washed clothes and didn't empty my pockets didn't put them in the dryer and ended up going to sleep. the next day during my first period I was told to pack up my stuff and go to the office because I was going home. my mom looked paste. she signed me out and grabbed my arm very aggressively and took me to the front of the high school where she pulled it out of her purse and aggressively yelled at me and asked me where I got it from. I was so afraid that I didn't have an answer for her. she ended up putting me in homeschool.even when I got home that day half my clothes were in the dryer and half still in the dryer. Like my mom saw it, freaked out and came to get me stat! it wasn't until a few years later that she actually taught me what that was because I didn't know but she didn't want to. my mom sent me to the library during sex ed and she kept me away from all things that were sexual related. she sheltered me and controlled everything until the minute I moved out. don't do this to your kids. teach them what a condum is. have those open discussions because you'd be surprised what your kids are capable of. and if they're I'm interested they'll tell you. stop treating sex like it's taboo. or like this disgusting thing that should never be talked about. I can't even talk about my period in front of my mom without her cringing. she wasn't even the one that taught me about all that stuff it was my aunt. don't do this to your kids.

OMG, this happened to me when I was 15, like almost exactly! Boys were being stupid at work throwing a condom around and a customer came in. It was closest to me so I grabbed it and put it in my pocket. Totally forgot about it and my mom found it in my load of laundry taking it out of the dryer. It was horrible and I knew she didn’t believe me. As an adult I told her that was the absolute truth and we had a good laugh and apology over it.

Yeah that was my mom, believing that somehow, talking about it would encourage it. So we never talked about it at all. Lead to some self exploring with siblings. Even then! No explanation about our bodies and safety or anything. anything.

My problem with no cell phones is that there aren’t any pay phones around anymore. Once your kid is out and about on their own they need to have a way to contact help. Doesn’t have to be a smart phone. Doesn’t have to have data, but they need a way to get help.

Love the first question and the response. You're not alone Delony on phones either--never allowing my kids to have full access to a phone as much as I'm able to control. Had this same type of talk with my daughters yesterday again. Of course we have a tiny farm with some mammals, so they have a general idea of how sex works---but we add the human rules to understanding.

I was babysitting my friend's kids, 4yoF and 1yoM. We were all sitting on the floor and the 1yo was climbing/crawling on the 4yo's back. Out of the blue, like an fyi, she said "it's OK for [brother] to touch my back but he can't touch my bagina" (her V's sounded like B's). 💀

Does anyone agree that it’s hard to trust a counselor that has “she/her” in professional signature?
@BFku36

Yes. Especially when I first went to see a therapist as an adult, going through major relationship issues..and she/they straight up interrupted me when I was in my feelings, and said "Look, I'm gonna be straight up honest with you..I am a feminist and 100% of my teachings and goals here, is feminist teachings and against men." 😳😕😐😐 It was actually a bit traumatic because I had entrusted this person, thinking the goal was to help me and find ways to help me make my relationship flourish, but she literally wanted to turn me into a "man hater." (Her words later on) and thats not what I wanted to be 😕
