I like twinwall polycarbonate But I also like the fact that I can get it through Home Depot “windows and doors “ is this section I think you need to look for guys talk to them they get it and whatever thickness you want and length

Thinking of going for plastic panes in the greenhouse I'm renovating. Should twin walled plastic be used for both the sides and roof or could you use a mix of single and twinwalled? What are the benefits of single panel plastic?

I like the Lexington cream wall polycarbonate because one shipping is free fungal send it right to your Home Depot and possibly to your house I’d ask first

Either way you could go to Home Depot and check out a sample of the product see if it’s something you’re interested in they sell smaller strips of it but what you are is the bigger full Sheets

In Europe we use hammerd glass, the same glass you have in you`re car. It does not break by medium hail and if it does it is not sharp and is in a thousand pieces.

Will the quality poly fit into the crappy harbor freight greenhouses? I'm just saying if that is what someone already has to work with and they need new panels? Will the good stuff even fit?

I have to agree that glas is fragile and will not withstand the impact like polycarbonate will but If we need polycarbonate to protect the plants from the "sun burns" then the Nature did pretty good surviving all these milleniums without it:) Also the idea of keeping UV from the greenhouse is a questionable one as in the middle of the winter I want all the heat I can get from the sun - afterall that's the reason for building the greenhouse.
@maximilian3339 жыл бұрын
+enuajsifoto generally these poly panels block about 20% of UV. plants normally grow near or under or around other plants which naturally blocks a certain amount of sun/hours from reaching that plant, and some plants do better. Having one flat panel over my container plants during August prevented scorching and led to crazy deep green lustrous growth in my california container garden this year. I was having problems with the combination or dry air here and the hot weather no matter how much I watered. in Ohio or Oregon you might not have these problems.
@a2ashraf9 жыл бұрын
+マックスシュッツェ Do you happen to know if the room temperature is increased? i.e i understand how light may be refracted to stay inside and not leave, however what about heat? Does heat come in and stay in with 'twin polycarbonate'?
@maximilian3339 жыл бұрын
Yes. Most greenhouses trap heat and most greenhouses have a fan and ventilation openings or flaps to remove the hot air. Especially in places with hot weather. And yes generally more layers will trap more heat from escape. The real purpose of twin wall is to prevent heat loss so that plants can continue to grow for a longer season, especially peppers and tomatoes which stop growing when temperature is below 50F. Then of course keeping a greenhouse above freezing temps can allow one to grow lettuce cabbage etc. throughout the entire year in places like Oregon, Washington, Ohio...
@JohnGuest458 жыл бұрын
The heat lost via thermal bridging of a typical aluminium or steel greenhouse frame is far in excess of any insulation value provided by the twinwall polycarbonate. Timber greenhouses are far superior in this respect :)
@alanbrown3977 жыл бұрын
Agreed but you can always use large sheets of twinwall and cover over the frame entirely instead of just in between like you do with glass panes.

how about heavy snow here in Canada?
@MrCheckitout1238 жыл бұрын
i have 6mm, with a 32% slant roof. the snow really does not stick to roof due to the heat buildup. i have had 1 foot stick over night and it was no problem. my GH roof is 2x4 rafters At every 2' with 6mm twinwall covering screwed and cualk'd.
@alanbrown3977 жыл бұрын
what was the surface temp on the inside? FWIW I noticed that you can get up to quad walls in the UK - specifically for things like conservatories and minimizing heat loss.
@paulmaxwell88515 жыл бұрын
We get up to 8 ft of snow here, up to 3 ft at a time. Polycarbonate can take it, IF your greenhouse frame is strong enough.

Lots of ignorant comments here. One guy brought up that if youve ever been burnt on your side window arm while driving? Making a good point in the summertime on long road trips the glass sorta magnifies sunlight on your arm and even hurts.
@mihaiilie88085 жыл бұрын
Your the ignorant ,because glass blocks a part from UV so you get less sunburns than without.
@carlosarango72109 жыл бұрын
Yes, you cannot get a sunburn behind a window but UV is a powerful mold killer. I am not expert with greenhouse but is is it useful for the plants to install a couple of UV-c lamps in order to sanitize the greenhouse?.. Just like they are sanitizing hospital rooms?
@paulmaxwell88515 жыл бұрын
Please see my comment above and click on the link to the University of Glasgow. UV harms plants and they have mechanisms to protect themselves. Put a plant under a UV lamp and see what happens!
@reggaetony28065 жыл бұрын
Put a glass patio table over your lawn and see what happens son. In less the 3 days youll have dead burnt grass. A green house is a man made object. Any time man is interfering with nature he may violate some natural laws
@mihaiilie88083 жыл бұрын
@@paulmaxwell8851 UV harms every living thing but its still essential for health of even plants. You get enough UV through polycarbonate and glass. They block UV but not all( i measured myself with an UV meter used for lizards , snakes and coral reef light tester.) Somme plants need more UV than otthers to regulate their cycle of life,just like they need cold in order to shed their leaves for winter. Not to mention the complicated organic chemistry and the proceses we dont understand iet,involving the UV spectrum.

Is it possible to know which side has the UV protection 'after' the protective film has been pealed off and thrown?
@paulmaxwell88515 жыл бұрын
Hmmm....that's a very good question. The Thermaglas polycarbonate from Palram, the world's largest manufacturer of greenhouse glazings, is coated on ONE side with a UV coating. It DOES matter which side is up. You should email Palram your question. Klaa2, you are mistaken. Polycarbonate is NOT naturally UV resistant. Try putting ordinary polycarbonate out in the sun for a year and see what happens.

Easily twenty years plus. I have friends with a 22 yr old greenhouse and their glazing looks great. DON'T use the Home depot stuff: it is NOT UV resistant and lasts a year or two if you're lucky.
