I left Vietnam at the age of 16 and completed my High School in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Growing up in America literally does make your brain process in both Vietnamese and US' cultures. I love your pronunciations and accents. I think it is great! One little thing that I'd like to advise you is that don't try to be perfect 100% American accent; sometimes, little Vietnamese accent makes you so unique in a way compared to natural American speakers. Thanks for doing this!

Great interview! One very important advantage about traveling in Vietnam for Westerners is that we can read the signs! If you learn a few words of Vietnamese you can get at least a rough idea of what a restaurant or food vendor is selling for example. I found that it was much less intimidating than traveling in China where I could not read the signs.

I escaped the country roughly 40 years, because I felt very uncomfortable with the political landscape there. And I now watch KZbin clips, good, bad, ugly about Vietnam, from many travellers, who travelled to Vietnam. So I could integrated a big picture about Vietnam. Thanks for all of your WONDERFUL videos :-) . Fully appreciated Van :-)

prodigal gal from Hanoi strikes again! June of 2018, a young Yale graduated student visited Vietnam for the first time and he was jailed in Vietnam for several months. this incident became international. believe it or not, Vietnam has always stand firm on their political beliefs and they wont tolerate any foreigners/visitors meddling and criticizing their beliefs. just because youre an american, it does NOT mean you can come into any foreign country and spew your ignorance and arrogance. hopefully he learned this lesson and wont do that shits again. a rule to follow when traveling into any foreign country - never ever talk about politics and religion. always respect local laws and customs. he was very fortunate to be alive today.

Your image to and about Vietnam is very impressive. Personally my first visit here in Vietnam was to offer my sincere apologies for my fighting in the american war. Although I never had hand combat. I did spend 13 months here One morning when I was having coffee I met a VN National and he said and I quote " that was a long time ago just forget about it " end quote. You offered many good suggestions. Once when I was getting off the plane in HCM I heard 2 older women talking . The one said to the other "now mary remember we only eat at the hotel not on the street " My thought was they will miss an important part of the culture here and that is the food. How better to first engage the locals than to talk about food. Oh well Thank you again

Cam Ranh Bay, 1972. The VC are attacking various bases and I am in a bunker with my Vietnamese counterpart. We talked all night. He told me that after the war, which he hoped would end soon, that he wished to be able to provide for his family, see that the children were well educated and that peace would provide a harmonious environment. And I thought to myself, here is a guy that squats when he eats with a pair of sticks, talks funny and holds hands with other men. And yet, he had the same basic desires that any human would have. At that moment I realized that regardless of superficial differences, basically we, as humans, were all alike.

I have been watching a few of your travel videos, great content and interesting. Thank you for making such great videos. I noticed you were promoting the good side of Vietnam currently but I think you just scratch the surface of destinations during your travel trips. There are so much more from a destination if you spend enough time to learn about it. You might want to interview locals and find out their daily activities, how they make a living, where the hidden gems, hidden restaurants, etc. They are important factors to tourists, they often don't know where to find them, whom to trust when they receive recommendations. I could have asked you too much, but those are my observations.

Of course, you're welcome! If your goal were to help international tourists and overseas Vietnamese, you would leave political views or the government agenda out of the content and stay neutral since politic and religion are very tough topics to chew on and there are many angles to perceive an issue. Please also keep in mind that showing the good, the bad, and the ugly sides of the story are very helpful for your viewers to see life in Vietnam through different lenses. They would have to draw their own conclusions about Vietnam and appreciate you in their own ways. Hope you keep producing much more great content and achieve your goals for whatever they are 💪💘❤

I admire your energy from the young person. Ignore the words from Vietnamese living in America, their mindsets are hurt from the communist. But also, keep yourself away not to be a tool of the communist because one day you may get hurt after putting in all your efforts. To be honest, I lost the enthusiastic so my words may sound negative. But if the country is strong enough, people will go and learn about our culture. It takes time to learn a culture not by travelling for a couple weeks or months. Vietnamese have great culture leading by a selfish and dumbass government. American culture is not better than us, not even said, we have some deeper and better culture than them. But the one of the few things American is better than us is democracy and it decides the game. Democracy changes the people's behaviors and shape the culture to become the better. People come to American and is willing to learn about the culture but at the beginning America has no culture. I think you are a good heart person and have pride in yourself, but you may need a plan: which values or perspective or how you want to end up in 5 years from now. That may help you to avoid any trap from the communist but also has belief and be proud of our culture and also you end up having some great memories and some values in your life. Keep it up. I don't why you are on my search haha.

The origin of culture in the US is British, but more of a blend because the French and Spanish were all exploring and colonizing the country from different points. And of course the Native Americans whose culture influenced the newcomers and even Europe, though ultimately their culture was largely destroyed. The early British were business oriented, and sadly much of American culture has become a worship of wealth and celebration of commerce, which is a bit hollow in terms of the traditional sense of culture. Van Vu has mentioned the Vietnamese are very status conscious. In some ways this has probably helped rebuild the country in the same way pursuit of wealth and status helped build the original British colonies in the US. But wealth and status alone do not make culture, in the sense of a cohesive group of people with similar beliefs and values. Pursuit of status (or even just curiosity about the world) eventually changes ones perspective, and can cause division with ones original culture, which might then be seen as embarrassing or backwards. Who we are, when we grow, can be different from what we came from. But we have ties and understanding, and that is important as we move forward and try to maintain a peaceful and healthy society.

This upload led me to Francis Hung's FB page. I especially enjoyed listening to your conversation in Vietnamese w/Francis of cultural differences between US/CAN/AUS and Vietnam. Gives me a lot to think about and work toward as someone who wants to work in VN as a clinician. Thank you! Please dissect more social/cultural differences between the US and VN! There's not that much out there on the 'net, it seems. It makes me think about how I interact and comunicate with my Ameirican coworkers and patients on a daily basis. I wonder how differently/similarly doctors communicate with patients and their colleagues in Vietnam.... Sigh... I know it takes a lot of care and time to build trust with your patients and colleagues in the mother tongue. It seems daunting to do the same in Vietnamese, of which I only have "the gist" of fluency.

@what the pho - young prodical gal - as an american, i can honest say american culture is very toxic. in fact, we are in a culture of narcissism. Asia is already being influced greatly by my culture except for Japan. i have a great respect for Japan to uphold their rich traditions and culture without western influence. on a positive note, vietnam is already influenced, but its still a good place to raise a family with good values. its very difficult to raise a family in north america continent. i bounce between Asia and North America and i truly enjoy having two homes. someday when im ready to settle, ill put aside my guns and have a famy with at least one bambino in Saigon so i could teach him/her to be a cowboy/cowgirl, but i will keep a girlfriend from North America for monthly escape.

The funniest part of all of these comments is that they all have to endorse and support positively the video the Social Media Code of Conduct is great. I don’t think anyone who speaks up would be able to be cause the instant they do it’s monitored and will get suppressed. Please do not remove this comment because the people deserve human rights via Internet since they aren’t allowed them in Communist Vietnam.

@phuong le I know why I wouldn't study high tech in those 2 places, but you should ask yourself what values potential students would get? Just because you demand something, it doesn't necessarily mean you are entitled to it nor does it make you right. Only an authoritarian body would believe in that.

@phuong le I think your comment is all in fun, but I think you are being too critical. I don't quite understand what you are trying to get at by asking such a question. We all know one of the most important reasons foreigners come to the U.S. to study is the U.S.'s high academic standards and a chance to master the English language. VN and China may not offer such comparable academic excellence. I, for one, also came to the U.S. as a foreign student from Vietnam in 1970. I came not only because of what the U.S. education has to offer but also for career opportunities. I was supposed to return home in 1976 but ended up being stuck in the U.S. due to the political situation. I have long let bygones be bygones. Whatever happens, happens. No matter how critical we are of the government of Vietnam, we can't change the status quo. At the end of the day, Vietnam is still our motherland. I would rather support Vietnam all I can instead of allowing China to gobble up our country. Just my 2c.

@phuong le i spent a month at VN university campus and the medical school curriculum is the same standards as in americ@, but they dont have fancy equipments. believe it or not, you can get a good job in america with medical degree from VN. VN is quickly becoming 2nd world nation and more young vietnamese are working. im very hopeful that its moving in the right direction. if you compare VN eith Laos, Cambodia, and Burma....VN is ranked higher than those countries on living condition amd access to resource

Let me tell you something about myself that i hope it can inspire you somehow. Me myself didn't study abroad, didn't attend to any course to improve my English, i do it by myself and still got to be an English tour guide with necessary qualifications although my specialty is programming not languages. It was a long time of hesitation and anxiety before i got into it, and when i got the first complimented feedback from international customers i knew that i had better have faith in myself. And you should too, friend!
