Is unity's backtrack enough to earn trust?

Even a full backtrack isn't enough now. Lost trust is lost trust. An important aspect to consider, is that Epic can easily decide to do something similar with Unreal if they so wanted; They've seen what Unity did, and god knows they're infamouse for trying to desparately undercut both their competition and their customers if they can give it a good PR spin, so they'll sneak something in, even if slowly. Theonlyviable options are to look for engines that *cannot* do this kind of rug pull; Godot is only the most obvious drop-in here, there are plenty of options that aren't Unity or Unreal that use MIT or similar FOSS permissive licenses which cannot undercut you by design, whatever you may choose could depend heavily on what your game is and which engine fits it best.

No they can´t. Unreal let´s you stay on the original EULA you accepted. Their terms explicitly block retroactive changes.

A big part of the problem is applying it to released games that were developed entirely under a different agreement -- rolling back changes doesn't fix the concern that they tried to change their agreement after the fact and may try it again.
