Why Update 44 Killed Battlegrounds for me (ESO)

I played again last night to try other modes with the new maps and I was in a 4v4 domination game and while the new map was nice for variety, I didn't like the size (too small) and there were 2 flags and literally each team kept going back and forth between the two flags. Killing other players didn't make much of a difference because respawning was almost instant every time and you respawn pretty much where the flag is because the map is so small so seriously what is the point of defeating other players apart from points for your score. An unkillable tank camping there would win easily. Definitely a downgrade in my books. So far the worst game, balance and enjoyment wise, I've encountered is the 4v4 deathmatch due to this new story with limited lives making the losing team suffer more (in the video just one guy was left camping on top at the respawn point until the game was over).

Couldn’t agree more! I also don’t know if I like how small the new maps are. Feels like everyone is just all over each other the whole match.

Thank you that its not just me! I agree the maps are too small, especially with the 8v8 it just gets ridiculous. I hope ESO devs 'fix' their fixes because now BG isn't fun anymore.

As they usually do, they ignored most if not all of the PTS feedback took the time to give them. This update shouldn't have gone out in this state. Personally I wish for 3 sided BG modes to come back, either permanently, or with every leaderboard cycle reset to switch out 2 sided and 3 sided. The amount of people queueing doesn't support too many queues in the game, with queue times being pretty long for most of the day. Also the whole queueing mechanism needs to be revised. I would much prefer the 4v4v4 strategy of just starting the match even if teams are not filled up completely, rather than constantly just sit in queues and matches being cancelled. Lots of games show good attempts to solve this, it's not rocket science, even with smaller community sizes and people in queue. ZOS just need to sit down and think this through better.

That's pretty much how I feel. I left a comment on their steam community update page about my issues because it looks like the dev is active there and I see many others have similar sentiments so mayyybe they might consider fixing their 'fix' if enough people complain. I really enjoy ESO and want others to enjoy other parts of the game as well, like the BGs, but I don't think they had the correct approach by removing a mode. It really should at least stay as an option. The endless queueing is incredibly off-putting and now I see people asking on FB how do they turn of spectator mode because apparently when you lose all your lives you spectate the rest of the match?! I haven't played more BG (than what was shown in this video since the update) to experience it myself but who is going to be happy with that new 'feature'. Apparently if you lose your lives and someone else just sits up at the top you can get kicked for not being active as well. They've got some fixing to do and its not even live on consoles yet XD

@@runkorko They did respond to a few people who asked if the 3 teams 4v4v4 would return and to complaints about the numerous bugs. Whether any criticism will be taken on board and considered is anyone's guess.

I think more so than it “killing” BGs or PvP, it really mainly just didn’t do anything for the state of PvP overall. This was “the” update after 7 years of nothing and it did little to nothing if not actually making the community more unhappy from a PvP perspective. Content has been extremely sparse in recent years and to simply change to 2 teams and add a few new maps after 7 years is mind boggling, especially considering how much cash flow they bring in yearly.

I must agree, this update has been a long time coming but look how long it took them just to fix their queuing bugs for BG and dungeons. I still remember when it went on for months, maybe more than a year after the Summerset expansion that you would have your weapons bug out and float underneath you when in combat. So I guess everything in due course XD and at this rate I'm going to be elderly by the time the next big PVP update comes along 🤔

I had played since I believe the thieves guild update, up until the next xpac after that I believe. Zenimax is terrible at giving their fans what they want. They would always cater to the extremely casual crowd (who would get bored and quit shortly after). It's funny to see they still haven't learned their lessons yet. -_-

I know, they literally stated themselves that this update was to make BG more 'accessible' to your average player that probably never plays it because they get one-shotted because they don't use pvp gear or skills and probably couldn't be bothered to try play with any (not that I have perfect stuff and I don't take it so seriously either but I used to play a BG match almost daily for fun). So I can understand where the 8v8 came from, in order for others to help carry you I guess like in Cyrodiil, and to make it more casual overall but why remove the option for a third team in 4v4? New maps and powerups have been a long time coming but it doesn't matter if its boring to play for people that have been sticking around for all these years like you and me :/

@@Dr_uberbabe if they bring old team vs team vs team back, i dont mind the new format. Team vs team can be great in premade grps, when ppl are organised, in voice chat, with setup roles, and all. So far is compleatly random who will win. Usualy the team who win the 1st brawl, wins the match.

I hope they release it with some sort of hotfix at least because quite a few things were broken with the update but yeah try it for yourself when it does come out and see what you think of it. I find BG boring now because of it but that's me

It sucks, it ruined bg's. They literally took everything wrong with Cyrodiil and mushed it up and made it worse

The 8v8 does feel very Cyrodiil like...meh, so meh. All I can hope is that a future update can address some people's concerns otherwise gonna just worry about PVE more for now and maybe some IC.

In my opinion, i liked the new bgs, faster, more frequent, more people, new maps.....could be there be more maps and more balance on the teams? Sure.....but I'll give it some time. As for cyro and IC, those need some changes FAST!!!! Especially cyro and those damn ball groups.

maps are fine. Team vs team is not. Not with this playerbase. If they want to "balance" it, they should remove spawn point protection,

I had to wait a long time to queue last night and the games felt slower, especially the 8v8. The balance I hope they'll figure out with time. I agree some changes or new modes were needed because BG and pvp in general has been getting stale for a long time now. They should just keep the option there open to people that liked the old way as well imo but I'm open to getting used to new things if the balance and fun is there. I haven't been to Cyrodiil in forever because it feels pointless to play even during the pvp events but that's me :/
