The interesting thing to me about the Doomsday Aircraft is that every POTUS since it's entry into service has refused to use it if nuclear war were to happen. The belief is that staying in the Whitehouse or maintaining the appearance of normal activity reduces the risk of a mass panic, which would potentially result in more casualties than a nuclear attack that may not even happen.

Former Boeing Everett where 747's are 'born'. E4B's and Presidential Movers began life at our mega plant in Everett Washington. When first 747 rolled out and took maiden flight in 1969, no one could have ever imagined how many varieties would result. The Queen of the Sky changed aviation forever. The aircraft can easily haul 100 people, food, and water for extended flights that can last a week or more. It can refuel midair, but can't restock food and water unless it lands. There are bathrooms and showers onboard. Those not only need water, they have to contend with sewage waste, which is held in storage tanks. Those are normally pumped into special trucks on the ground. I suppose if poop tanks got too full before landing, they could be dumped when over the ocean. Water becomes more important than food in long emergency flights.

Considering that fuel can be transferred mid-air, I imagine it wouldn’t be much more challenging to transfer water. Also, I can imagine the possibility of transferring nutritious food mid-air utilizing canisters or some sort of packaging that is tubular in design. With a goal of perpetual airborne capability, I bet the folks at Boeing could make it happen. Thoughts?

Fun Facts: Air Force One is 1 of 2 Boeing 747's specially modified as the Presidential Mover and Mobile White House. Actually any aircraft the President flies in under Air Force control becomes Air Force One. Marine One is 1 of several specially modified Sikorsky S-61 helicopters for transporting the President. Usually from White House to Airport where Air Force One is waiting. Between 2 and 3 Helicopters fly together, acting like decoys. Unlike the 747, the Helicopters fly low altitude. And yes, the Green Helicopter has a bathroom. It's called Air Force One when the Air Force is transporting the President. It's called Marine One when the USMC is transporting the President. Typically the Air Force pilots fixed wing aircraft like the 747 and the Marines pilot the rotary wing aircraft like the Sikorsky Helicopter.

The answer is.....YES it has been tested for hardening against EMP and what makes you think the ground installations don't have the same hardening? You can look it up on Wikipedia. In the 1970s or 80s they built a HUGE wooden trestle and towed a B-52 up on it (among other things) and exposed them to EMP. I assume they tested various methods of protecting against EMP and equipped the aircraft accordingly. One thing I know they did was to shield the aircraft wiring by encasing it in metal braiding which was then tied to aircraft ground. In fact.....ALL modern aircraft are hardened in this way, military and civilian. All flight critical wiring is encased in braided metal shielding and the shielding is tied to ground. What is the level of protection? Who knows. It's probably a military Secret.

Manuel, of COURSE they expect it to work. You can think of it this way, think of shielding like a bullet proof vest. There is no such thing as a bullet proof vest.....but they are bullet resistant. So as long as an aircraft isn't hit by a direct blast then it has a GOOD chance of surviving the EMP from the blast. The United States conducted 1,032 tests between 1945 and 1992, to test for just this sort of thing. Over one-THOUSAND blasts Manuel. I bet they know a LOT about hardening against EMP.

@@rael5469 I beg disagree. They expect it to work some of the time. Your analogy of a "bullet proof" vest was quite apt. A great many civilians actually believe that EMP can be totally thwarted. Just as theyh believe that a scope on a rifle guarantees a lethal shot. They also believe that there is an actual device that can produce EMP, but the only thing I know of for certain is a high altitude nuclear blast. I understand that a shielded vehicle right on the fringe of such a blast might survive, but the truth be told, all such contrivances are the product of a kind of morbid mental state. Nuclear war today is just as unthinkable as it ever was. I know. Not only did I grow up during the Cold War, I was a candidate for duty in the missile silos of that era.

Apparently there are militaries of the world that have nearly a hundred interceptor rockets to intercept and oncoming ICBM and several dozen laser devices to try to eliminate a warhead although by the time it can be tracked and targeted the devices and the equipment will only have about 3.6 seconds till impact and this is 1958 icbms icbms have always re-entered the orbit and been able to achieve hypersonic speed although icbms are somewhat more detectable than low flying hypersonic missiles although with minor technology even a low flying hypersonic missile can be immediately detected so there's no real advantage to it because an ICBM is already hypersonic since 1958 and typically in one successful exercise it took more than 25 interceptor missiles along with several different lasers to shoot down one warhead which typically there would be five warheads to one ICBM spread out over tens if not hundreds of miles and you would only have 3.6 seconds or maybe a maximum of 11 seconds to react to the targeting of those five icbms over a span of hundreds of miles and 11 to 3.6 seconds which is not a very good probability of anything that could be done. It reassures me that for thousands of years there have been people without clothing without shelter without civilization or electricity that have lived in the rainforest and are still there to this day and for the next thousands years will probably continue to live out their lives there. When I go to the shopping mall and buy all the goods I possibly can just to watch the garbage truck go down the street to need to throw it away at one given point in order to go to the shopping mall to buy more things in order to watch the garbage truck so I need to throw it away to go to the shopping mall to get more things. Regardless for all the damage that does occur in a all-out war whether conventional or a thermonuclear worldwide Armageddon at developed and civilized metropolitan areas 1747 that might be able to do one thing or another about it doesn't really make a difference for the destruction that may have already occurred that they can do nothing to change that destruction once one error had been made you can't undo a thermonuclear detonation in a metropolitan area although it will the 747 will still be flying around in circles watching it yeah I guess we missed one.
