Not sure what it shows in your locale, but here in the US, it always says "currently unavailable," and that's the case whether I'm accessing the Amazon site or using my Amazon shopping app. The good news, though, is that I can buy it directly from the apple.com site at the same price ($39)

I don't scrimp on my tools. Having said that? Buy the very best that you can afford. The caveat is that you risk blowing up a far more expensive piece of gear. Perhaps even your centerpiece, your computer. There are better ways to save money. If you are new to this? Follow Pete's advice. Hold off buying something risky and wait to get the thing you really need. Great video, Pete! Thanks for all you do! 😊

It's not about cheap or expensive itself. It's that brands, especially major companies like Apple, manufacture their products in a wat so that using their own accessories is best to guarantee comparability with their products. Otherwise they lose money to the myriad of 3rd party options. That's why Apple used Lightning for so many years, instead of adopting USB-C from the jump. It forced consumers to have to buy Apple's Lightning adapters and accessories for all those years. Same with the right to repair issue, they don't allow consumers to use less expensive 3rd party repairs otherwise they void third product's warranty. It's not that a brand's own accessories are better quality than all the competition - they use plastic and make them in Asia like many others - , many of them just manufacture and optimize their hardware-software so that you're compelled to use their own accessories, as opposed to 3rd party products, in order to guarantee the most effective pairing with their products. And of course, they always overcharge because they can. There are often alternatives with less expensive 3rd party options, but you have to do the research.

I bought one made by Henkur and fortunately it's been working for me but I've only had it a month. Before buying on Amazon I read the reviews and someone gave a step by step process which refers to the order in which you connect it to devices. I only bought the off brand because I was impatient and had a new interface, and Mic I was dying to try out. I went to the Apple store to buy the original and left when I saw the 2 hour wait in line. So third party was available same day delivery for a few bucks more where as the Apple adapter would've taken a couple days...thanks Pete

I’ve got to admit, you’re right. I had a 3rd party version from Amazon, but couldn’t get it to work with USB pen-drives. It was quite dodgy with my Behringer UMC404 audio interface (yes, I watch the pennies, when buying my gear), too. For some reason, audio levels went really low when recording. So, guided by you, I’ve written that off to experience and splashed out on the genuine Apple product. I hope I’ll get years of trouble-free operation, now.

according to Apple the "Lightning to usb 3" will transfer at usb 3 speeds (with ipad pro for example). The "Lightning to usb" (the one without the lightning socket for charging) is stated by Apple as usb. So the smaller adapter is usb whilst the larger adapter is usb3. So according to Apple there is more differences between the two adapters than size and the ability to charge. Thumbs up for the video. thanks

Hey there. So I’m not super familiar with the devices you’re using but in short, iOS can only support one input/output device at a time which may be why things are switching between the two. If you plug in a USB or Lightning based device it will override the 3.5mm TRRS jack.

Questions❓I’m in the market, and I understand USB C will dominate from now on til atleast 5 plus years according to some sources so I’d like to not invest in anymore lightning products even know i do need some. I see comments from just 3 months ago, are they still blocking knockoff’s and updating Lightning firmware? Is there a chip in the aftermarket ones (lightning to USB A)? This is what I figured with apple, they gotta tax your ass for the privilege! I would love if there was a universal hub maybe with a USB A (preferably 10GBs+ w/power) port so I could just change the damn cord so long as one end is still USB A and fits in the hub’s port so to make it universal across all USB head’s and functional to all OS’s. Does this exist? Does it exist with power? I seen somethings online but I couldn’t be sure if for instance the hub would be recognized like in this situation by IPad Air 2 iOS even if it fits in lightning port because of these “chips” hidden inside of these OTG/Dongles/Hubs w/e? Another option I seen was a little adapter USB C head that went over Lightning? Does that also have a chip? 🤗Thank You for making this video I’ve been procrastinating and you formed the question so well in the title.👍🏻

Hey there Chadd. So, my experience with this is that the genuine Apple adapter is a required backbone. You can then attached USB-A hubs and other devices, but without the genuine Apple device in the middle there, they become unreliable at best, and unusable at worst. Now that the newer devices are USB-C it is much better as universal gear can be used, but for those of us with Lightning based devices, this is still a necessity, at least in my experience.

Hi Pete. love your videos. Very helpful. I have been following your instructions for using a powered usb hub and an original Apple lightning to usb adapter. Im getting intermittent connection at best. Most of the time it will not work. Im using an Ipad Air 2 with a genuine Apple lightning to usb3 camera adapter and a Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 audio interphase and a Ptp-Link usb3.0 7-port power hub. Any ideas on why I might be having connection problems. ? Any input would be very helpful.
@PeteJohnsMusic5 жыл бұрын
Hey Mel. That’s strange? Sounds like your setup has the right gear there. You should be getting enough power through the hub for the 2i4 and if the cable is the genuine Apple version, I’ve never had connectivity issues. Do you have access to a different hub to try out? You’ve probably heard me talk about the Tendak hub lately which I have found the most reliable of all the affordable hubs I’ve tried recently - kzbin.info/www/bejne/n4atcol9fb2hg9U What exactly is happening? Is the interface just cutting out randomly?

@@PeteJohnsMusic hi Pete. Thanks for getting back to me. I can't get it working at all now. Using genuine Apple cables and adapter. Everything seems ok except the hookup to the Focusrite audio interphase. Im thinking to try the IRIG PRO DUO 2 in lieu of the Focusrite. Any thoughts on that ?

The first thing that happened when I plugged in a new Apple adapter was the iPad said it was "updating" the adapter. That's for me is where the rub is. Periodically the adapter is going to get checked to see if it's genuine Apple (Apple tax) and eventually it will stop working...by design.
@PeteJohnsMusic5 жыл бұрын
Yes, I didn't mention it specifically, but the Apple version actually has a chip installed with firmware which can be updated if and when Apple change the way the lightning connection works with iOS, which others definitely don't. There's plenty that can be talked about around this and whether it's the right thing for them to do, or if it actually adds value to have software in a cable. 🤔
