Why Use The AF SERVO Modes? Testing Out Canon R5 Auto Focus Settings

In this video I’d like to share my experience of using the Canon RF400mm f2.8 with the R5, while shooting a Rugby 7s tournament.
I finally had the opportunity to test out the different AF servo modes using this lens and camera combination, and, I’d like to share the results.
There is a disclaimer, however! This camera and lens combo is an absolute beast. First of all I’ll need to show you some of the basic settings for the focus system.

Great video. Very helpful. For action stuff (stills) I use the same settings on my R5 as far as the AF basic settings and assigning buttons. Does the R5 track the selected subject when you are using the spot focus button to acquire focus? Are you holding the button after spot focus is acquired? I find it is quite a learning curve to understand and use the R5 system for action stuff but that it really can work extremely well with this set up.

Hi Rob. Thanks for the comment. Sometimes i have two buttons set up as back-button focusing. One will be assigned the eye tracking auto focus and the other can be switched from spot focus to AF tracking. I find most of the time there is no point having eye tracking and AF tracking both active, therefore a switch one to single point focus as that is generally more useful if the eye tracking isn't working perfectly.

Do you get the moving reticle in the viewfinder as well or just on the LCD?

Yes it shows up in the viewfinder as well as the LCD
