Supporting our sponsors helps keep us in the workshop and saving more plastic from becoming pollution 🤙🏽 A huge thanks to GudYu for sponsoring this adventure with their plastic-free toothpaste tablets! 🌱 gudyu.co.uk/
In this video, we take on possibly our most ridiculous project yet.. building a fully functioning tent out of crisp packets. After our success making a bivvy bag from crisp packets a few months ago, we decided to step it up a notch and see what can really be made using a bunch of used chip bags and an iron.
And.. there's no point in just making a tent without testing it properly, so we took our crispy creation out to Dartmoor for some wild camping, with one of us sleeping in a standard tent and the other in our DIY version. Spoiler alert - it was windy, rainy and rocky.
This was also our first video with our new camera - if you noticed a difference in quality or style then we'd love to hear your thoughts!
And here's our video where we tested our recycling toothpaste tubes 🦷

Brothers! I'm proud to be the 515th viewer. I just realized that if you extended your rules to allow for rice bags for the floor of the tent, then you would have a much more durable product. I can't wait to try this. This video was very wholesome.

Vents near the top with an additional weather cover would help with the humidity problems. Maybe use mesh vegetable bags over the openings to provide some structural integrity, though if you can scrounge some window screens, they may be better material. Cool project!

Hi Guys That is an amazing project! I love it! I wish I could find the video I had from years ago, that was from India. This lady had people gathering all kinds of wrappers and trash. She had people cleaning and sorting the trash and she built houses from the trash! This wonderful lady even built furniture with the trash! It was so cool! The lady used big blocks made out of trash for the walls. It was awesome! I love your tent ideas! I love doing DIY things. I have even thought of putting plastic bags together in layers and making giant sheets, to put up a water vapor barrier for a storage shed. And build the shed out of wooden pallets. I haven't done it yet because of space in my mobile home lot. But I will as soon as I get a house of my own.😁 Great job guys. This would also be a nice mat for going to the park or beach. I would use it to put a blanket or comfy mat on top of it. 🙂 Also I've subscribed to your channel. And I will keep watching to see what else you guys get into! Have a wonderful day! Cheryl 🙂

Very cool idea, and for a 48hr by the seat of your pants build, this managed to do quite well. I imagine that this sort of structure would be best suited for milder climates, but also that this sort of material could be utilized in multiple, non-camping applications such as vapor barriers. It may require multiple layers and overlaps, though, and i fear the level of prep needed to use this material would be a huge barrier to large scale implementation. It would be interesting to see if somehow this material could be combined with other recyclable material(s) to be used as a base product to be used to make other things. I wish i knew more about polymer sciences to be able to suggest some theoretical ideas. As it is, i am just astounded that this build worked as well as it did. My hope is that an elementary school somewhere has a science teacher that subscribes to your channel and inspires their students to pursue what may be possible in the world of recycling materials. Thank you for a fun, entertaining, and inspirational channel.

Cheers Allen! For sure, they also work well for things like radiator reflectors too. But agreed, I think it's unlikely it'll be happening at scale, especially using this kind of process. There are Crisp Packet Projects set up around the world though who do use these to make things like sleeping bags for homeless people. We do have a lot of teachers reach out to discuss how they set up plastic recycling classes in schools using our videos, so that's always amazing to hear. Thank you!

I'm really curious if anyone has any information on how these might be used in a hot climate, like Texas. If you reverse it, would it be cooler on the inside? Heat is the most dangerous thing we experience here, and there is a large unhoused population. We've also got a litter/recycling problem around our city and beach. I wonder if it would be possible to partner some of the environmental groups with the homelessness groups in a mutually beneficial way.
@lesallison9047

Yes, the sheets will reflect the heat. It will work best with the silver side pointing towards the sun. I have seen these bags turn into sleeping bag, bags, keeping sleeping bags dry from rain, and reflecting the heat back into the sleeping bag. They were being used in the winter in Northern England. Not sure about the economic aspect to it, as obviously a lot of heat is used in making them and you can buy silver polythene on a roll. Best of look anyway on what sounds like worthy plan of action. ✌️💚🙏 🇬🇧

You was alway's going to be up against it simply because of what the crisp packets are made of🧐. The problem you have and that you are going to struggle with is the moisture/condensation, as you already know because of the outside temperature being different to the temperature produced by your bodyheat etc the tent will always have condensation sitting upon the inner wall's. It's going to be a challenge for you to make the inside dry, even if you are able to somehow install a dry liner to help stop the condensation from basically getting you wet the issue is that condensation will develope between the two walls of your tent, the inner wall of the crispy tent and the dry liner itself. I hope you decide to take the opportunity to put together another video of you doing your best to fix the moisture problem and stay overnight in the open countryside again. Basically, recreating this video once more 🤔. That said Goodluck to the pair of you 🫡🤪
@BrothersMake

For sure! We figured the easiest fix would be to add some larger vents at the top of each triangle and maybe on the sides, and add some mesh in those areas. We probably need a small break from tent making haha, but would be keen to try another version in the future! Thanks, Simon ♻️

Love the idea of repurposing the chip bags or similar. But ironing the bags, plastic, may be bad for your lungs. I do not know. // SHLM & HaB (peace & love). The Name of the Creator is Hayah Asher Hayah, as what He told Moshah (Exodus 3:14), preserved in the Hebrew Scriptures. The wages for sin is death but the gift of ALaHYM is Everlasting Life through Messiah Yahushgh our Master (Romans 6:23). That if you confess with your mouth the Master Yahushgh and believe in your heart that ALaHYM raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved (Romans 10:9).
