Why Vashti says no to Xerxes in Esther

Esther 1 is a story of contrasts. Vashti defies the king, and King Xerses chooses Esther to take her place. Why does Vashti decide to disobey the king and lose everything?
In the ancient world, wives were allowed to come to the banquet. But once the drinking got out of hand, the wives went home, and the men brought in the dancing girls and the concubines.
As the queen, in refusing Xerses’ orders, she is essentially saying, “This is not my role. I will not do this.”
Vashti dares to say no.
Thus, in her answer, Vashti models the ethical line she will not cross. She is the woman who says no, even if it costs her everything.
The story presents two possible ways of living in Empire. Vashti takes a stand and loses everything, while Esther stays, and works the system from within.

It doesn’t say only her crown and I’d be real careful about adding words to the Word of God. Your feminist bias is showing. Yes Vashti disobeyed her husband however her husband was very drunk and surrounded by many other drunk men. She did the right thing by refusing to enter the room and God used that bad situation to save His people. Since Vashti wasn’t killed for her disobedience, I’d say God protected her for doing the right thing. The king repented his decision when he was sober but couldn’t reverse it. He knew what he did was wrong when his head was clear. But God turns everything around for good. I love this book. She had a quite and humble spirit and she accepted wise council. God blessed her with favor with man and Himself.

I do not believe she did the right thing. She was honored as queen and wife and all the men present at the kings house had wives who were in the company of the queen. I did discern the hen party to be a control over how dare a man interrupt our time. I do believe it would have been one of those issues where she would have been paraded. BUT no one will make me believe if she were to be in the presence of the town folk strolling through seeing her countryside and people cheered her beauty she wouldn't have been thankful. If she can and am sure she did I think some gratitude of her privilege of being able via the king to host a party and not just have the men have a party a viewing of the queen was not a horrible option.

Where in the Bible does it say “she is to come only wearing her crown”? The book of Esther is not about Vashti. It’s about God using Esther to save His people. To turn around and make Vashti, a character that did not serve God and had no desire to serve God, the hero of the story is to turn from God. If God wanted Vashti to be someone we looked up to, the book would have been about her. Let us focus on scripture and what God is truly trying to say in it. Not simply what we want from it.

Exactly. They are trying to twist this to be what they want. Esther was submissive and got more done than Vashti. Being submissive doesn't mean giving up her rights. It allowing the man to lead or APPEAR as the lead. Men naturally want their woman to have what she needs and wants as long as he isn't made to feel he's mistreated or taken advantage of. Let him feel like a King and get everything she wants out of him. It's very easy. And that doesn't mean don't have her own or be totally dependent on him. If they both have careers and she want a new car but would like him to pay half for the down payment, I can bet he does it without issue based on how well she takes care of him.

By this logic should we strive to be like Shimei, the person who cursed King David? How brave of him was it to curse the king? By no means, we glorify God for His mighty work, despite our failings. Esther and her uncle, Mordecai were in the wrong simply by being in Persia. God had told the people to move back to the land of Israel. Why didn’t they? The law of Moses, ordained by God, explicitly says that the Israelites shouldn’t marry outside of their culture and yet Esther married the king of Persia. The hero of this story is God. Not Vashti, not Esther, not Mordecai. That God had grace and mercy on sinners like us, and made us clean. For His glory. “For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.” ‭‭Romans‬ ‭11:36‬

It’s easy to read our interpretations based on western ideology. Vashti was not a queen to be praised nor was her denial of the king something to be looked favorably upon. The text does not go into much detail concerning her refusal, we are left to our own devices but who was summoning her was more than her husband, it was the King. While his behavior was deplorable, she lacked wisdom, probably due to her “banqueting herself”. Ester showed wisdom and trusted God while Vashti was dishonorable and not wise 8n how she handled the King.

Vashti was not serving God but she was used by God, I believe that God hardened her heart to the King. God protects us from sin, even if you don’t serve Him, He also uses people/situations to serve the greater good which was the whole meaning of the book of Esther. God’s protection over Vashti can also be seen by her not being put to death for defying the King which would’ve been the standard at the time, she was given God’s mercy through the King’s response.

Also take in the land at the time. Persia respected women and in high esteem. The king definitely did not tell that woman to come only in her crown but to come completely decorated in all her royal finery, like was later done to Moredecai as a thank you from the king for letting him know his chamberman plotted against them. This whole feminism plot came in because one of the women got to the king when he was angry that Vashti said no and said you should take her crown away as punishment or all women would feel it’s ok to snub their husbands too, not because women were weak and Vashti’s refusal would make them strong but because women were also powerful and revered and didn’t want them to piss their husbands off and make them feel weak… like the king was on top of being publicly embarrassed. The footnotes in my Amplified Bible note that “in the Jewish tradition” (oral history?), it is said that Vashti was indeed commanded to appear before the king and drunk male guests, wearing only her royal turban to distinguish her from a serving girl. Dressed or undressed, she might have been going into a lion’s den and would have to discourteously leave her own guests.

Apparently this info is not incorrect you have to look into either some of the study bibles or theology to find this information out. It’s the not the first that I’ve heard this, a woman of God researched into this and share something like this. She said that he wanted her to come basically naked with just her crown on. You need to be careful, the interpretation that Vashti was to appear only in her crown and thus naked is not explicitly stated in the text and depends on cultural assumptions. Most traditional and contemporary translations do not imply nudity but rather focus on the intention to showcase her beauty. If you say that traditional readings support your claim, then you also need to say that other traditional readings say the text simply means Vashti was to wear her crown as part of her royal attire. Bottom line, God’s sovereign protection and preservation of Israel is the key point. Most impressive is the fact that the Israelites in Persia where not allowed to worship God based on Mosaic Law. God used those he did not return to Jerusalem, those who remained in exile, to save His people.

My question is.. the Jews were not under threat while Vashti was queen. So what was the whole point of Esther becoming queen to save Jews if they only came under threat once Mordecai refused to bow to haman? Is almost seems like the plot was created out of thin air and could very well have been avoided.

Also, where are the words "drunk" and "naked" in Esther? We must not "add" to the Bible.

( in the text it says he advised Esther not to disclose she was a Jew) he also didn’t reveal it himself. If he had religious boundaries he shouldn’t have put himself in the palace simply to “keep an eye” Esther 2:10-11. Instead he should’ve trusted God.

Vashti is a Persian queen. At that time, the Persian Empire did in fact include parts of India. However, Vashti is not Jewish. In fact, the name Esther isn't really Jewish either. It's her name from the Persian culture. Her Jewish name is Hadassah. The Jewish people are just as indigenous as the Arabs (if not more so) when it comes to the ancient history. However, essentially none of them lived there for nearly 2000 years until the 1940s, whereas many of the Arab peoples have lived there continuously for the last 500 years. It's a very messy story.

I know Indians have a weird obsession with Jewish people, but literally modern day genetic testing shows that Jews trace their ancestry back to the Middle East. In fact, Jews are genetically closely related to the people of the modern Middle East. Your average Jewish person is genetically way closer to your Levantine Arab than they are to a European or an Indian. Hebrew is a Semitic language that is a cousin of Arabic. Also, Vashti is a Persian name as is Esther. They sound Indian to you because Persian and Indian languages are indo European.

I don't think that the king nor his royal council desired to see Vashti naked, for they were not compelled of wine and their drinking was according to the law. I think that is reading something into the text that the text doesn't specifically tell us. I think that I am agreed with Memucan in the sense that Vashti's defiance is as was an insult to the dignity of her husband's office, and I think we shouldn't treat him (Memucan) as if he is Haman unless we can find evidence in the chronicle of the kings of Media & Persia that it is so, unless Haman's name was blotted out purposefully. He must have been seeking the throne for himself and his descendants, but it seems unlikely that he would have gone through a name change privily, without the record giving recognition to that fact. So, I am arguing with Jewish scholars on this one. It is very unlikely that Memucan and Haman are the same person. Whatever reason Vashti refused to obey the king's commandment, her defiance is what is emphasized, and so it is likely that she was worthily excommunicated. I think we can give more appropriate credence to the old ways, in recognizing that in a royal monarchy, the queen is not independent of her king, and if she treats the throne that way, she can be cast out simply for refusing to yield. Of course, Shushan lies in ruins now, but we have a very fine record of the days when women were expected to submit to men in authority, and even to obey their words (specifically, wives to their husbands). Ideally, women would strive to be more like Esther in the spiritual discipline, and not like Vashti. They would find that they can approach their husbands even when it is seemingly impossible, and that they should not defy their husband's expectations when they are asked to be treated like showcase trophies. Obviously, there comes some considerable risk with showing off one's wealth, but if a woman were to use this passage to identify with the climate of reason and to learn from record of Vashti's error, she would not be doomed to repeat her misfortune. The apostolic teaching tells wives to obey their husbands as they obey the Lord. Do you wonder where they got this from? Vashti's defiance should be disconcerting to the heart of wisdom. We should use this passage to teach wives to obey their husbands and to warn of the dire consequences of disobedience, as they are one and no longer separate. Vashti is NOT a virtuous heroine of the times, but a disgraced figure. Her former office was replaced by Esther because she was found unqualified to bear the responsibility of the crown and likewise the throne. Remember, a little leaven leavens the whole lump. If she was unwilling to obey her husband in the smallest thing, how much more so the weightier matters of the kingdom?
