Warcraft is one of the best video games movies. The story isn't hard to translate to movie (the original story was even extended through novels!) and the director, Duncan Jones, is a Warcraft fan himself, knows the world and characters. He really cared a lot. The movie isn't perfect, no movie is, but its really not a bad movie and its an even better video game movie!

I appreciate the discussion about videogame stories, but disagree on a few points - like the argument that videogames can never tell stories as well as film or narrative books. I studied literature during undergrad and am in a creative writing MFA program now, picking apart fiction, seeing how it ticks, and using what I learn to write my own fiction. And from what I've seen of *some* videogame stories, the medium absolutely has the potential to tell great stories. Firewatch, Gone Home, and Oxenfree are great recent examples of straightforward, short narratives that are on par with what gets published in book form today. When we sit down to watch a movie, read a book, play a game, etc., we're inhabiting a different mental space to experience a story, and games simply allow for a different mental space than other mediums. Like, Gone Home would have been *good* as a novel or a movie, but it wouldn't have allowed the audience to participate in the narrative space the way games can allow. Also - movies aren't inherently narrative focused. The vast majority of them are structured to tell a story because that approach has been the most commercially successful. There are less narrative-focused films out there that explore the limitations of visual language.

Carlos Chism Gone Home as a videogame made me care much more about the story then even a well made movie probably would have.

I would also to add why games don't translate to movies well is because many games have great stories but most game we play because of the fun game mechanics. people don't play the COD or battlefield games because of the story mainly but because it is a fun shooter game. I mean assassin's Creed and watch dog's had great stories but it is fun to play because we get to choose where we parkour and what we hack but a movie takes away our choice. and choice is what makes open world games so much fun.

You missed, DriveClub VR, Tomb Raider, Star Wars Battlefront X-wing, Loading Human, and 100ft Robot Golf. I really could go on put I don't like typing. What I am trying to say is It seems like IGN really doesn't give a shit about PSVR or VR in general. They really could be doing some better coverage. Sad thing is if this thing takes off like the Wii they will jump on the band wagon and pretend they were always on board.Nothing against Gamescoop though, you guys are the best part of IGN!

Perhaps video game movies need to start as small scale film, similar to the 1st X-Men or the 1st Iron Man. The first thing to do is get them right and build up from there
@nathangm818 жыл бұрын
Justin is way wrong on video games not having stories as good as movies has. And also, people used to think comic books would never get decent movies, because there was so many issues to unpack in just one single movie. And that most of the time those stories didn't make a lot of sense. And look now, there's plenty of movies that perfectly translated well from comics to the big screen and even to TV series.
@ipathskater48 жыл бұрын
The problem with video games movies is that they keep making movies out of games that don't have any story. Mario, Angry Birds, Tetris, Minecraft....none of these games have a story. Now they're doing Portal...the great thing about all of these games are the game-play, the mechanics, not the story. Take a game that has an actually decent story and the movie might actually be good lol.

Instead of asking "was it made after Jan 1st, 2000", the editors should ask "is this after the fifth/fourth/second/sixth generation"...

I don't think conparing video game stories to film stories makes much sense, or saying they are worse. You couldn't tell stuff like FFVII or MGS2 in a movie, and besides, they are commenting on their medium.

Did I hear this right? Sam considers Tarkovsky's Solaris a part of the sci-fi/horror genre? That's absurd.
@charliemilroy64978 жыл бұрын
of course videogame movies can be good. the length argument is invalid, just look at adaptations of tv shows made into movies. the reason for videogame movies being historically poor is that the stories were bad, but it's mostly because studios don't know how to adapt videogames to movies. think about comic book movies 10 or more years ago. now Hollywood knows what they are doing with them

Please name one good movie based on a TV show.
@charliemilroy64978 жыл бұрын
I can't name one, but a few. The A Team, 21 Jump Street, Starsky and Hutch, and the Inbetweeners. There are a few more. They aren't all great, but it is possible. There absolutely will be a good videogame movie eventually, it just has to be set in the world. They'll never make a good movie based on a book though.

A firewatch movie? Won't we know the ending already
@gamescoop8 жыл бұрын
Won't you know the ending of any video game movie?
@markofunkade8 жыл бұрын
Not necessarily. Similar to comic book movies, I feel like other video game movies, often have different stories set in the same universe, resulting in twists with different endings. Firewatch just seems like a very singular story. So if they were to remake it, it's hard to imagine how it could be different than the game while still being called Firewatch (because its singular story is largely what makes Firewatch, Firewatch). Of course, there's nothing wrong with knowing the ending, and there's nothing wrong with a faithful live action adaptation - like going to see a live play that you've seen others perform before. I guess what I was trying to say is that since video game movies tend to be more like spin-offs, how would Firewatch translate into a video game movie? Anyways, it'll be interesting to see
