I played a show in Norman, Oklahoma, on a Saturday, and everything sounded fantastic with my 1957 Esquire. I picked her up on Tuesday, and there was no sound when I went to the neck pickup. I checked solder joints and metered it, and sure enough, the Esquire's neck pickup was dead. This episode is about how Tele pickups die, and how to a degree it is a bit inevitable to the gigging Tele player.

I've been making pickups so long, I learned from Jason Lollar's 90's home printed book on how to make pickups - with a hand held drill! One big take-away was his recommendation of a glue "fillet" around the interior of the magnet to flatwork joint (often just the E magnets) - the glue sucks itself into the tiny gaps, and both stops bobbin warpage during winding or hot wax potting and inadvertently seals the pickup from egress of sweat and beer. Masking tape is not enough I have found and I don't use it - CBS era Fenders come in all the time where the rust "burns" through the tape. As you said Zac - these pickups aren't forever - but thanks to Jason, I've only had a return or two due to a rusty pickup in 20 years. Great content as always - wishing yours and everyone's vintage pickups a long life!

You know what else kills pickups? Using steel wool to polish your frets. All that steel dust is drawn directly onto and INTO your pickup. Then the steel rusts and shorts out the pickup.

Maybe your Esquire was trying to send you a not-so-subtle message about wanting to return to it's roots -- as a single pickup Esquire! I'm only kidding. So sorry to hear about your pickup woes, Zac... but let's be honest, you sound great no matter what guitar or pickup selection you're using.

When I got my tele way back in 1984, the previous owner had removed the cover on the neck pickup. When I would gig, the high e-string would often get caught on the lip of the pickup when I would bend it. Aside from being extremely frustrating, it eventually killed the pickup by severing the windings. Back then, about the only replacement available was a DeArmond tele style pickup, which is what I went with. Still on the guitar and sounds okay to my ears but I wouldn't mind trying something else out in that position if I thought it made a huge difference. Honestly, it never made any difference to me, I was happy to just have a working pickup. Thanks for everything you do on here and congrats on 35K subs!

I had to rewind a buddy's neck pickup on a '70s Tele. It seems during that period, Fender was using lacquer to pot coils, rather than wax. I gather over time, and especially temperature changes, the lacquer contracts and coil-turns can tear.

Great stuff, thanks! The neck pickup on my CS Nocaster died from being raised and lowered many times. The route for the neck PU was was so tight that the windings from the bobbin to the the eyelets rubbed against the wall of the route until they wore away. Now I only use Tele neck pickups with 2 notches in the base of the bobbin , where the eyelets and leads meet. Live & learn LoL, thanks again, love your channel.

Great video! The notorious ICPC; internal coil pole corrosion! Heat and shock, as when hit directly can affect pickups, definitely. Many years ago I had a ‘69 Tele with Bigsby; the pickup died and Lindy Fralin rewound it and it sounded amazing. I am thinking that this same thing applies to early P Bass and lapsteels too. I’ve learned new things in this video too. Thank you, brother!!

Pickups die for any number of reasons ... coil winding breaks, lead coil wire gets cut, pole pieces rust and wear through the coil winding insulation, bobbins can outgas and corrode wire, pole piece gets pushed through the top of the bobbin and snags a coil winding, strings get hung underneath the edge of the top bobbin with no cover and cuts the winding ... man, I've seen just about everything happen to a Fender pickup ... Hope you're doing well Zac!

Zak; I have a 1948 Gibson BR-9 Lapsteel. Not long after I got it the pickup died. I sent it to Jon & Throbak as he has the original winding machine that was used when it was made. It sounds great now! but yeah, the humidity and heat will cause the windings to deteriorate along with everything else. He used NOS wire that he has saved just for rewinds.

The most common reason old Tele pickups die -- and are quite inconsistent, some sounding great others not so much -- is because they were manufactured incorrectly from the getgo. Leo thought it was OK to wind directly on the slug magnet pole pieces, relying on the wire's (thin layer of) "enamel" or formvar to prevent shorting to the pole pieces, without first wrapping the row of pole pieces with insulating tape -- or, even better, figuring out how to put (just a tiny bit of) distance between the wire and those pole pieces.

Good info. My Telecaster turns 30 in October. So far she's been rode hard, been through tornadoes, earthquakes, floods, & perhaps cruelest of all besides my curious Grandchildren (their mother wasn't allowed to touch it, but Papa's precious babies, well that's different), me pounding on it. But I've always tried to keep it in relative safety. So far no problem. But I don't play it constantly, I've got a cheap import for that. I'm doing a couple of Country songs (NOT my genre) for a guy. Non paying gig, but he asked me nicely. I was trying to mimic the old Mississippi Hill Country Blues sound (RL Burnside, Fred McDowell, etc) I tried it acoustic, recorded the guitar last night, thought it sucked. Listened today, sucked even harder. Broke out the Tele, a whole new vibe hit me. Sort of a cross between the Hill Country & Delta, pkus a little Texas thrown in. I think I've got a decent song now, kinda swampy, spooky sounding, so I'm happy. The other tune is basic folk/country, I'll knock that out quick. Ant way my Tele has inspired me just pulling off the stand, I love the Telecaster. They're such versatile guitars, & in the right hands, they're magic.(Wish I had those magic hands😂🤣🤣🤣🤣)

I had a brand new fender branded “original vintage” bridge pickup that I tried using on a friend’s build and it was dead. I felt bad and I gave him a different pickup and I ended up keeping the dead pickup. I ended up rewinding it with a Mickey Moused drill in a vice rig. It was definitely a stagger winding and sounds really really different than any bridge pickup I have heard. I still use it from time to time

I had to replace a friend's bridge humbucker on his Gibson for the same reason. The pickup didn't have a cover on it. I was just thinking of this playing my Tele in the hot weather. The cloth coil wrapping I am sure absorbs sweat on a Tele pickup.

Been a hot summer here in North East Texas...some venues have stages that are basically outside or the AC can't keep up. We've been sweat soaked by the end of several gigs this year. I tried to wipe my Tele down as best I could but I can see how the sweat could cause me problems eventually. I just play a MIM Tele so I would probably just replace a pickup if it died...but at least I'll know why it died now!

I used to work for ABB power transformer company and we had Farm bar on our coils that we wound. Before we would send them down to assembly we would bake the coils that had Farmvar on them which would insulate them better and keep them from retaining moisture acidity. Why don't you just bake the pickup with the farmer on The Wire so it insulates it more and add oil repellent.

Telecasters appear to last forever Zac mate, but unfortunately the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics dictates that "everything" including the Universe and Tele pick ups move towards a state of disorder or chaos. Entropy I'm afraid is inescapable - even for a Tele pick up. There was a theory of eternity floating around when Keith Richards decided to play a Tele, but even here, entropy will get him in the end. Hi Zac. I think that does not matter as long as it isolates the magnetic field. No?

which is the back pickup and which is the front? Where did this naming convention coming from? I’ve always heard and said: “bridge”, “neck” and when appropriate “middle”. If its a regional thing, do you know what region and why? Thanks, Angus

Great video. What about the magnets losing gauss? That can happen to right?
@AskZac

Yes it can. Especially if you leave your guitar near a speaker magnet.

@@andreamarrado You might want to check out his video from 2 weeks ago with a tour of Ron Ellis's workshop. Ellis talks a bit about degaussing and says that it's not really a concern for the average pickup. He figures most pickups that have lost gauss have been laid next to the big magnets in speakers or left in extreme weather conditions a lot.

Good reality check. Perhaps the tele gets the brutal treatment, being the work horse guitar. Most of the time the pickups get trashed by bad repair jobs.

Hey Zac, I have a 72 Tele with EMGs in it but I want to restore it to original. What pickups would you recommend?
@AskZac
@AskZac 2 жыл бұрын
A set of 60's style pickups. Ron Ellis is my fave, but they are a bit pricey. You could also check out OC Duff or Arcane

Zak, I've got a 63 Tele I've had for years, and last time I had it out, the bridge seemed weak. I just put it back in it's case then the safe. It's not one I want to take out anymore! Will it hurt the value when I do decide to have it looked at, or should I just leave it for the next owner to deal with? I'm getting older and have done dealt with cancer once, so I now look at it as a little nest egg....Thanks, Enjoy your channel!

If purely for value, you may want to leave it alone.

Rumor is that some 63' Tele bridge pu's were accidentally wound to the spec of a P-Bass pu, and were a lot hotter than normal. Certain players like Brad Paisley seek out the 63's for their enhanced sound.

Simple, Zac… High resistance suggests a break (or a thinner wire) while low resistance implies a short. Both happen.
