@@menzies09er I disagree. An annual report gives me as an investor such a good grasp of the business. It’s strengths, weaknesses, what is growing, what part is shrinking, what is the business going to change in the coming months, years.

@@danbo967 I believe most of those things can be learnt outside of the reports, its easy to learn whats happening in a sector. As I said, the research on it says that its very rare that the release of company accounts has much impact on the share price, so clearly they arent too useful, or the types of info contained in them is acquired elsewhere before they are publicly released.

If you want to invest in a company, Focus on the management of the company. There is an intent behind a report. Be an intelligent owner of a business. Learn the industry backdrop, with Annual reports. Takes a long time to read, but you get a good understanding. It is the way one learns about business. You don’t learn by reading market commentaries alone.

The annual report is good if you want to learn about the business in general and it sometimes contains a letter from the CEO. 10-k are more detailed, contains more financial data and where you wanna go if you want to dig deep into the numbers of the business. So annual report for company’s model/strategy and 10-k for detailed numbers. Both are very useful.

It's fine trying to read annual reports but you have to be an accountant to even understand and make sense of them. So while Buffett's answer is great, it's really not much use to the average investor / lay person.

@AM Distant that’s a pessimistic and fixed mindset mentality. You need to understand accounting? Then learn accounting. It’s not rocket science. When I wanted to learn about financial statements I read books and studied accounting
@amdistant5547
@amdistant5547 3 жыл бұрын
@@drek273 It's not that easy. If learning accounting and then reading annual reports was the key. All accountants in the country would be millionaires. Financial experts who run billion dollar mutual funds can't beat the index. Buffett has been studying the stock market since he was 16. He has been personally taught and trained by the best of the best in Benjamin Graham. For the rest of us who have regular jobs, we're kidding ourselves to think we have what it takes to pick stocks. All we're doing is buying and hoping.

@@drek273 No offense but you're the one who sounds like a loser with your "I can do anything", shoot baskets like Michael Jordan and have stock picking abilities like Warren Buffett. Get your head out of the sand and BE REAL, it's one thing to be smart and quite another to be delusional. Even Buffett when asked how the average investor can pick stocks like he does responded by saying - don't, just buy the index.
