When the 50th anniversary of The Wizard of Oz came up, the celebrations included Ebsen because he was the only one still alive (save only some of the Munchkins). So perhaps the best revenge is living well.

I saw Buddy Ebsen sailing on a very large catamaran in Newport Beach in 1977. Then I had a chance to buy his Thistle-class boat, Rebel Yell, in 1984 but was outbid. That boat went on to win a national championship.

I was an extra on the film: "Fire on the Mountain." Buddy came over and talked to us at our table during lunch. He went out of his way to be nice to us. I will always be grateful for his kindness (such kindness is not rare in Hollywood - it is non-existent)

Hollywood term for extras casting: cattle call. Did craft services for a couple of years, the "stars" were to have the name brand goodies, the extras were to have the cheapest available were the instructions from every production.

@@jaquigreenlees of course extras know they eat worse on cattle calls but they are expected to provide water and snacks at regular intervals, on the flip side if you are on a small set extras will get the star treatment I did on several sets. Worked the episode Monk Goes To Jail and we hung out with the stars in a few areas we are like king's it's all relevant to the set and cast

Whenever you saw Buddy Ebsen in ANY role, you immediately liked the character because HE was likeable. He even played a 'bad guy' in an episode of Maverick and pulled you in. I grew up on The Beverly Hillbillies and watch it to this day on one of the nostalgia cable channels.

I loved him as Jed Clampett. He was the voice of sanity (such as he saw it) in that crazy family. It cracked me up to see him sit there whittling peacefully as the flurry of some insane activity went flying by him. He always had the perfect reactions. Buddy was the perfect actor for that role along with Irene Ryan and the others. They made it a made it a great show.

That's the thing about Beverly Hillbillies. Everybody knew that it was absolute fantasy. Nobody in the real world was that ignorant, but the cast was so good that they made it work. They took the silliest plot and left us half believing in it. The Clampetts didn't have the best educations in the world, but they had enough common sense to make up for it. (Except for Jethro. He could give dumb lessons to a rock.)

My deepest memory of Ebsen was his role as Davy Crockett's sidekick George Russell. As a very young boy, Russell's dying words to this best friend at the Alamo: "Give'em what fer Davy". Left a strong impression on me.

I am an 81 year old man, and i remembered Buddy Ebsen. I always liked what he did in both of those series. I did not know that they took 16 years of his life for those 2 shows. But he did a great job. Which show did i like the best? well that's hard to say. Most of his Jones show had him doing the usual, bit once in a while they had a very good one and you felt like saying ( great job old fella, very well done. etc. ) When I was a young fella, I wanted to be on the stage or the movies. My first role was when i was 5 and i played a small part in a church play as Santa Claus. In the 6th grade I was Tom Sawyer in a school operetta. It was the talk of the town and every where i went i got lots of kind words and lots of slaps on the back, and asked when was my next show was going to be. So when i was in the 7th grade the Elementary school Principle asked my teachers that if she could have me in the afternoon to help her out with a musical show just before Xmas. Then we got a big big snow and had to cancel and it was never done later. I was working with the singers. i could sing. In the 8th grade I had a small singing group . We met in the auditorium after lunch and tried to make a good singing group. It was called Joe Stephenson & his fire house 5. then the end of my career. In the 9th grade my voice started to change and i did not know it but i was having trouble caring a tune in some songs. I was on the show that we had for young performers at the start of school. I had to apologize and walked from the stage, never to return. I was so embarrassed. I still wanted to preform but i never got the chance and i started looking at the girls and the cars, lol. Even at 81 I now clearly still remember all this.After High School, w I moved away and studied for the ministry and spent my whole life in front of audiences, not preforming for fun, but trying to change the world. Now my life is about over, and am in poor health, but all i can do is pray and that is going to be my final act. Then of course, the curtain comes down. Thank you for listening. For a short documentary, that was very well done. Louie B Mayer was a great man, but he could also be a real prick. Fortunately, television opened new doors for most actors, and in some cases, closed doors for others. Fortunately, Buddy Ebsen had two successful long running series. Pretty good for an elderly gentleman who was told he'd never work again. Rest in Peace Buddy.

Mayer blacklisted my grandmother. He actually had legit cause, in her case. My grandmother ran away* as a minor to get into movies, and my great grandfather didn't know where she was until he saw her in a movie. He showed up in Mayer's office with a shotgun and demanded to know where his daughter was. That was the end of her career - none of the studios would touch her after that one movie. She was bitter about that the rest of her life. * Not the only time she did that - she was a seriously wild one. She was once busted breaking *in* to Marine boot camp - because that's where the Marines were.

I was going to say something similar. While I wouldn't call Louis Mayer a great man, I would say that he was responsible for creating a studio that released some absolutely great films. Not all of MGM's movies are memorable, but of those that were, many were absolutely legendary and iconic. Having said that, it seems like he was a really shitty person. Actors were disposable to him and he treated people horribly. He was ruthless when it came to business.

I recall the plot a little - the lead actress was being blackmailed by a Japanese businessman - forget the setup - leading to a murder, coverup, trial, and dramatic witness box confession; the first movie to ever pull what would later become known as a 'Perry Mason' moment. Her role was a supporting one, showing up in one or at most two scenes.

I spotted him once on a cable car in San Francisco. I was on my way home from tap dance class. He was reading my Snoopy button which read, "To those of us with real understanding, dance is the only pure art form." I really liked to watch Buddy and it didn't matter what part he played. My favorite was as Georgie Russell in the Walt Disney Davy Crockett series. I watched every episode plus reruns. Fess Parker and Buddy were two of my all time favorite actors. I found out at the time of Buddy's death that he was born in Belleville, Illinois in April 1908. My Dad was also born in Belleville in July of 1908. We watched the Beverly Hillbillies together and he liked Buddy as well, but never said anything about recognizing him and I assumed that they never met. Buddy went off to Florida at 11, Dad was the son of a stone mason who was mostly employed in and around St. Louis and took Dad out of school at 12 and made him go to work with him. Some of their stone work still stands today in St. Louis. Buddy and Dad should have gone to school together, but Dad died in 1984 and I didn't know about the connection until 20 years later. They had totally different lives in that small town of Belleville.

When I was around 16 or so I had the pleasure of meeting him. He was walking to his Yacht, a Trimaran, moored in front of his house. He was varnishing the woodwork. He lived on Balboa Island in Newport Beach Ca. He was very nice and was excited to show us his boat. We talked for quite awhile. This was after the Beverly Hillbillies had ended.

I liked Buddy Ebson in most all his roles but probably my favorites is the watch him in roles before my time where he would dance. My mother was a very good dancer and pointed them out to me from time to time. (her sisters told me as a child, "You mom could've been a singer/ dancer!")

I met Buddy in 1981 after he remarried. He was gracious and charming. He spent 15 minutes with me talking about his rare coin collection. I was just 19 and had just started my first full time job at Bowers and Ruddy Galleries. He was very encouraging.

He was great in "Attack!" starring Jack Palance. An all-star cast with Eddie Albert, Buddy played a forlorn sergeant during WW2 in Europe. What a flick!

I always loved Buddy Ebsen. He always entertained you whatever he was doing. I'm convinced he was a good guy. I have a cousin that stationed on the USS Constitution in Boston back in the early 70's. He met Buddy Ebsen who'd come to see the ship and he took time to tell jokes and entertain the sailors.

We had seen one of the cast of Oz in late 80's. He was the Host at a restaurant in Youngstown NY near Niagara Falls. Buddy Epson was and is a great entertainer.

I had the privilege of eating breakfast with Buddy Ebsen when he was filming an episode of Alias Smith and Jones in Moab, Utah with my cousin, Roger Davis. We enjoyed hearing some of his life stories. He earned our admiration as he treated the wait staff and everyone else with respect and encouraged the others on the crew to do so as well.

I was born in winter park in 1987 and raised in Central Florida all my life until I finally left in 2012. I never knew Buddy had attended Rollins nor had lived in Orlando. I remember watching the old reruns of Hillbillies as a kid. This was a great video, very informative.

I remember a story he once told after Mayer blacklisted him for refusing to enter a peonage contract with MGM. He was driving back east with no prospects of work when his car broke down in a thunderstorm. As he struggled in the heavy rain, lightning, and thunder to fix it, he called out in frustration, "I sure showed Louie Mayer, didn't I?" With an attitude like that, is it any surprise he finally achieved the success he so richly earned? Today we remember Buddy kindly. Not so much so with Mayer.

I've always loved that guy. In The Beverly Hillbillies, I thought he was really the most likeable character- even-handed, unflappable, and always positive. Whenever things started to get out of hand and zany, they'd balance things out a bit by flipping back to a scene with him and his calm, mellow reactions, to bring things back to Earth a bit. It really was a great sitcom.

I was born in the late 1950's. At the time that The Beverly Hillbillies first aired we didn't have a TV. But whenever an episode aired my mom and I would go over to our neighbours house to view it. I loved the series and still watch it today. Buddy Ebsen will always be the lovable Jed Clampett to me.

For about a decade Ebsen took up the hobby of coin collecting. His collection was eventually auctioned off in 1987. Somewhere in my pile of stuff I have an autographed copy of the auction catalog. It seems he could do well at whatever he chose to do.

Jed Clampett plays a class act regardless of how much money he has or the change of environment. He maintains his “simple man” personality and his soul. I so enjoyed this character buddy played watching on a small black and white tv. U r still loved and remembered in the hearts of many buddy❤

My favorite role of Buddy Ebsen is the sergeant in Night People, with Gregory Peck (Ahab in Moby Dick), Broderick Crawford (Highway Patrol) and Rita Gam. Definitely one of my top movies. RerunZone, thank you for your efforts. May you and yours stay well and prosper.

I worked for Canadian Coast Guard and was flying home from Victoria , B.C.after a week of ticket requalifications wearing my number 1's. Just as I was entering the airport , a tall older gentleman stepped out of an Airstream trailer. OMG , Mr. Ebsen , nice to meet you as I extended my hand. He shook my hand and I went inside. He went through security right in front of me and I asked for and got his autograph. He approached me in the waiting room and we chatted up a storm. He was in the war on a PT boat , so we hit it off great , talking shop so to speak. Very enjoyable experience for me.

I always liked shows with Buddy Ebsen, I'm glad to hear he didn't have as hard a time as a lot of older actors, one of my favorite shows was one about the Cowsills (who the Partridge Family was based on) he introduces the Cowsills and adds commentary to the show and they sing (sometimes with Mr. Ebsen) and tell their story. It's called "The Cowsills A Family Thing TV special" it's in 2 parts and can still be seen on KZbin, the shows pretty good and so is the music, pretty much the Cowsills Greatest hits. If you watch I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. Thanks, Rich for another happy memory from my childhood, great video, big thumbs up, please keep them coming.
