I'm still salty over the closing of "Animation Academy". That was such a cool hidden gem, where an animator would teach you how to draw different characters, and you could bring your drawing home.

Really like your content man, I don't know if I've ever commented before, but its great! And yea its always gonna be MGM Studios is our mind. I've been doing some research for our video this week and found out that Disney tarnished the relationship with MGM even more through the Great Movie Ride in wanting to use even more Wizard of Oz content then the original contract stated.

I'm with you...but I miss the OLD park....it's getting to "fad" than it once was and is being taken over by certain movies like Star Wars They've lost One Man's Dream the Backlot and the playground I use to play for hours in and Lights Motors Action and the Great Movie Ride...there isn't even any special holiday celebrations anymore...no Backlot means no Osborn Family Light Spectacular Even the old water tower has been replaced TWICE as the park logo It's lost the magic IMHO and is my least favorite park that I don't lose any sleep over not visiting if we only have time to hit 2 or 3...I like some of the rides and shows but it's just faded too much from what it was to what it is

AGREED, but I see why, it is always a near walk on and even more with the new crowds to the Star Wars expansion, they need something else to gather some of that crowd, and I feel DHS is a more thrill ride type park with more of an adult appeal (outside of Star Wars of course)

It was one of the few rides that made me want to head to the other coast and visit WDW (I'm a Disneyland native and longtime passholder). I am really sad that now I will never get the chance! However, on the bright side, the idea of a Mickey Mouse ride sounds awesome! If your going to loose a classic, that's a great alternative to loose it too! At least one of your classics isn't being torn down for some modern franchise that's yet to prove itself as having staying power *cough* Guardians of the Galaxy *cough*

I'm really saddened by the change in focus at MGM/Hollywood studios from a focus on filmmaking to a focus on Disney's IPs. I get it from a business standpoint, but I can't help but take it personally. As a child, a visit to MGM studios gave me so much inspiration and motivation that I now work in the film industry today. It's hard to let that go. :/
@cyanmanta
@cyanmanta 7 жыл бұрын
Hungry Creature Productions I understand your disappointment. This was the first WDW park to be built and opened in my lifetime. I have fond memories of participating in the special effects tour and the sound show. However, this park didn't abandon its concept; the concept abandoned the park. The sound stages weren't in use, the animation building was abandoned, and since then rides and shows have just been shutting down with no viable replacements for them that fit the go-behind-the-scenes theme. The backlot was just a boneyard of unused movie props that would never be used again. Nothing has been produced behind the scenes of this park since 2004. There was a time when a film and TV production park made sense, but that time is over and will probably never come back. We can't just let it become a monument to old ideas, we have to look to the future.
@whossoul
@whossoul 7 жыл бұрын
I think ultimately the issue is that the idea of a studio park just isn't relevant anymore. When it opened, going behind the scenes and seeing how films and shows were made was a novel concept. In the age of information this isn't an exciting idea anymore to the masses. We already know how film is made. The concept feels outdated now, too old to be fresh and exciting to the masses, but too new to be a classic. It would be nice if they could have stuck with that original concept, but they chose an original concept that wasn't timeless, so the park soon became outdated.

While I will miss the Hollywood backlot concept (MGM has always been my favorite park), I think that the new focus is still true to what this park is supposed to be - an experience where guests get to go *inside* the movie magic! Times have changed, partnerships have changed, technology has changed, and an update is necessary. Ultimately, though, what we are going to get is even more immersive than Hollywood Studios ever has been before. What I have always loved about the park is getting to have a role in the magic - and now I really will be able to!

Ah the memories. I worked at MGM Grand Adventures Theme Park in Las Vegas in 96', when I was in high school. It was a big deal back then, it was the biggest amusement park on the strip. And while the parents were gambling on the strip, it was a place where kids could ride and play all day.

As a veteran of theme park employment when the MGM Grand theme park opened, I knew from my first visit that the park would tank - there was a limited number of rides, too many retail shops & places to eat. The park was about 35 acres, had only 7 rides, with 4 theaters - so no real reason to be a multiday park but as a place to leave the kiddos whilst you gambled (and then met up with them every few hours). Later on a handfull of "carny rides" were added (with some being only temporoary), in 1996 they added a skycoaster - causing 3 rides and one theater to be removed. So honestly ride number was always lacking. The main issue though was the weather, as somebody who has ever visted Las Vegas can tell you - we get very hot in the summer and unlike SIx Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia (SoCal) wich has copious amounts of misters to cool the guests down - MGM lacked sufficient amounts of said misters. Overall MGM was never fully invested in the concept and after sufficient money loss, they shuttered the park less than a decade of operation. Eventually razing the park and putting up timeshares. By comparision, The Adventuredome at Circus Circus in Las Vegas (where I worked for 11 years) also opened in 1993, it was 5 acres under a temperature controlled dome with 3 rides and a laser tag but unlike MGM Grand was similar to Disney as it was a ticket based park with admission being a few bucks (eventually being free with the advent of the all day wristband). The major difference in my opinion is that the upper management had previous theme park experience and were able to make incremental changes that improved the park without causing upper casino management peroblems until it became a viable department of the hotel/casino unto itself and they were given greater freedom to do things.

The kids and I went in 2000 or 2001 and it was the most boring park. Other than the Aerosmith roller coaster, there was pretty much nothing there. Drew Carey making noises? Seriously how did that become an attraction? We went back for Spring Break every year for the next 10 years and never once even thought of going back to MGM.

One thing I keep forgetting about this park is that the drawing class is no longer open. It would especially have been nice to be able to draw Louis the Alligator there, had the majority not unfortunately picked Buzz Lightyear instead, while we were voting between the two characters. Had it been just me and my dad there, it would have been a tie, and then I'd probably get to draw Louis with the teacher, while my dad would have gotten to draw Buzz with him.

Eisner's first 10 years at the helm was fantastic, but when Disneyland Paris tanked and Frank Wells passed away, plus his refusal to promote Jeff Katzenberg signaled the beginning of his slow decline. When Eisner decided to go after Roy E. Disney that was the last straw for many and he was ousted by shareholders.
@marcosvalenca
@marcosvalenca 7 жыл бұрын
I respect Eisner and the good things he did for Disney. But he also started the trend to charge for everything at Disney destinations. Everything Disney has become more expensive after him. Aside from that, some of what Eisner did was NOT in the best interest of the shareholders and his compensation over the years was... How can I say it?... too big and decided by himself.
@Zombeastsqurl
@Zombeastsqurl 7 жыл бұрын
Because Eisner was a great Idea man, but his eyes were bigger than his stomach. And it's clear in a lot of cases his ego won over making smart business decisions that cost Disney more money in the long run.

One thing really confused me. I watched a vacation planning video of WDW from 1995 here on KZbin. It called the park 'Disney Studios'. I used to own the VHS cassette of the video, and that one named the park 'Disney-MGM Studios'. Hey Rob! Could you possibly explain how Universal Studios still has Marvel-themed rides, even though Disney owns the rights? Do you think there will be more rides geared towards Marvel characters (like they didGuardians of the Galaxy) in the Disneyworld parks?
@MidwaytoMainStreet
@MidwaytoMainStreet 7 жыл бұрын
Good question! It ultimately boils down to timing. Universal had a contract with Marvel for use of their characters for rides long before Disney purchased Marvel. When Disney did finally buy Marvel, that contract carried over. Right now the contract is such that specific characters like the Guardians or Doctor Strange can have rides at WDW, but virtually all of the other big ones are off limits. Universal would either have to decide to drop the rights, which they honestly won't do as long as it's popular, or Disney would have to pony up enough cash to make them drop it.

Universal also gave Spider-Man an HD upgrade, and they just did some heavy maintenance to the Hulk last year. It's also a very popular part of Islands of Adventure. Universal most likely expects Marvel to stay at their park for many years to come. But I'm pretty sure they are only allowed to maintain and improve their current rides. I don't think Universal can add new Marvel rides.

I don't think this is accurate. I believe there's something to do with the continental nature of the deal--Universal can operate Marvel rides on the east coast of North America, and Disney can on the west coast of North America, in what I can only imagine is some bizarre redo of the Treaty of Tordesillas /s. Shanghai is a separate consideration, because a reasonably prudent person cannot argue that it would pull vacationers away from Universal Orlando in the same way that a Marvel ride in WDW might.

And according to a recent survey Disney has been sending to people, apparently Disney is considering changing the park's name yet again...Which I guess would make sense, since the park is getting further and further away from its original studio based theme with the upcoming additions of Toy Story Land and Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge.

Hey Rob! I have a question about the tower of terror in HS. I went to Disney in June and met up with some friends that informed me the last time they rode TOT they saw some mannequins on the ledge of where the doors are when you are dropping. Like when the doors are opening and you see out into the park. I tried to look up information about it but really didn't find anything other than people saying they were the air blast mannequins but I still don't think that is what they were. I read that stuff about it on the WDWMAGIC forum but that was all from feb 2013. Another forum post from march of 2013 claimed strobes weren't working. Now four years later I don't know if they are fixed and that's why their description of the mannequins don't match what I saw. My boyfriend claimed that you can only see them during certain ride sequences and my friends claimed this to be true since the next couple of times they rode TOT they did not see them. It just so happened when we rode it we saw them. They are off on the right and left side and we didn't see them on the ledge of the first drop but the second or third (like the lowest doors and the middle doors of the tower) seeing them on the ride was he scariest experience of my life and the ride picture proves it. When I say mannequins it looks like the outline of the bellhop and the little girl that were killed in the tot ride story. It almost looks as if real people are standing on that ledge. I want to stress the fact that they were not in the middle of the shaft. Off to the sides. They were not projections like the things you see before you might go up and drop again. I was wondering if you have seen these or know anything about the different effects on TOT. I am very sorry this was a long question but it was such a hard to describe experience and almost traumatic enough that I can't ride TOT if I am not in the back row😂

I remember calling it MGM Studios in the park one day and still the workers tell you it's NOT MGM Studios. It shows they are probably coached to say that.

The first problem was in disney's and mgm's partnership that in 1986 ted turner acquired the pre-1986 mgm library, so they could not use the theme of the wizard of oz movie nor tom and jerry and others (sorry for my english)

I know Disney said that the park isn’t gonna be renamed again anytime soon, but I feel like after recent events, should Disney decide to rename the park again, it should be renamed to Disney Fox Studios.

I wish Hollywood Studios and its attractions still focused around movie magic. I'm excited for all the new attractions ( The Great Mickey Ride, Toy Story Land, Star Wars, etc.) and as an annual pass holder, I'll obviously be visiting them. However, I just don't really think we can really call these "theme" parks if they don't revolve around a particular theme..... i.e. Mission Breakout is an excellent attraction but what is it doing in CALIFORNIA Adventure? Just my thoughts 🤷🏻‍♂️
@dynasty0019
@dynasty0019 6 жыл бұрын
When DCA received its name change from Disney's CALIFORNIA Adventure to DISNEY California Adventure, the emphasis is no longer on California, but on Disney. The current, post-2012 DCA is literally about a Disney park located in California, not a Disney park about California. GotG: MB is just the first phase of many of a massive Marvel expansion that is to come, MB may look awkward now, but once the whole final project is completed, it will totally make sense.

Licensing fees and copyright statues began to creep up so the ride's cost is not just in its operation and maintenance, but also in its name and the scenes/theme in it.

Hey rob great video, Do you think Eisner has had a good influence on Disney or do You think he's made some questionable changes?
@MidwaytoMainStreet
@MidwaytoMainStreet 7 жыл бұрын
I think over 20 years or so, it's too nuanced to be a flat good or bad influence. He did a lot of good for the company, but he also made his fair share of questionable changes. Overall considering the state of Disney in 1984 when he came to the company, it was probably for the better that he did.

Speaking of branding, I notice that your recent videos haven't had any sort of identifiable visual hook. I understand why you dropped the previous icon that looked like a video game controller. For a while I could visually identify your videos based on the font style you were using. Are you working on something else for this?
@MidwaytoMainStreet
@MidwaytoMainStreet 7 жыл бұрын
Daffy, I can always count on your for the ones that make me think! I don't have anything in the works at the moment outside of the test I've been running for a few weeks with text-less thumbnails. I think when it comes to the branding and hook, the biggest variable ends up being where you think the traffic is going to come from. So to that end, I think if I were to develop a hook or brand, it'd be more for my vlogs since that's the kind of content where I'd expect all the traffic to mostly be subscribers who know me. For stuff like this my hope is that like the Water Smell video, much of the traffic would be curious viewers who might be stumbling across the channel. With that in mind I think it becomes less important for people to distinguish it as a video from me, and just that it's an interesting video overall. I'm probably articulating it poorly, but I guess it's all to say that I'm always willing to try new things with styles and branding, but at the moment I'm testing to see how the minimalist approach goes.

The main reason it changed is because they figured that nobody cares about classic Hollywood anymore, at least not enough people to make big bucks for the company. And Universal Studios' attractions aren't limited to Universal's film library; they attractions based on other films through licensing rights with those studios.

I just visited Hollywood Studios this week. I was very disappointed because it's not what MGM used to be. I remember at age 12, when it was MGM, there was an actual movie ride and I loved it. There was also a little I Love Lucy area and a Mickey and Minnie's house that you could tour. I remember there was a Honey I Shrunk the Kids playground and now none of that exists👎

@MidwaytoMainStreet
@MidwaytoMainStreet 7 жыл бұрын
Great question! Over time certain films changed ownership. In Singin' in the Rain's case, ownership eventually changed from MGM to Warner Bros. In fact I'll have to double check, but I believe at this point the only film representation in the park that is still owned and licensed from MGM itself is the Wizard of Oz bits of The Great Movie Ride, which of course is about to change.

I'm going to be honest, I like the name "Disney's Hollywood Studios" more than "Disney-MGM Studios". For one, it just rolls off the tongue a lot better, plus, it was never just about MGM in the park, especially in the years leading up to the name change. On one side, we had Lucasfilm's properties in the form of Star Tours and Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular, pre-Lucas buyout, on the other, we had CBS' classic Twilight Zone and Aerosmith, who aren't even in any of Disney's record labels. Not to mention, The Great Movie Ride represented a whole lot of different movies from different studios (sans Universal, of course) in the finale montage. So yeah. Also, Disney's Hollywoodland would be an even cooler name, if they choose to go with it.
