Really great presentation, as always! Quick addition, however. You seem confused as to how Spain "owned" Belgium. Pretty simple, really. Ferdinand and Isabella's daughter, Juana, married Phillip "the Fair" of Flanders, of the House of Hapsburg. By a strange turn of events, Juana became heir to the crowns of both Castille and Aragon. Long story short, her son, King Charles I of Spain, inherited the title of Holy Roman Emperor on the death of his paternal grandfather, Maximilian, and all the lands with it (which went well beyond Belgium). And that is how the House of Hapsburg (the Austrias, as we call them) came to rule Spain and much of Europe. Btw, "Flamenco" is Spanish for "Flemish". 😉

A couple of corrections on Las Meninas. Velasquez is painting the scene while looking in a mirror. The canvas he is painting is Las Meninas itself. The painting is a revolutionary because of several things. Rather than being a conventional, stiffly posed portrait, he captured movement, a moment in time, like a snap shot. They are looking at a mirror, but they are also looking at us, the viewer, through the veil of time. Using a mirror makes the painting as much like a 3D image as a 2D image can get. It's like a Hologram put on canvas. Furthermore, Velasquez putting himself in the painting was only done a couple times before, and not so prominently. It's an indication of how respected Velasquez was by the King. Then putting the King and Queen in a blurry image in the back of the painting in the mirror, would have gotten any other painter in big trouble. Las Meninas is revolutionary, brilliant, and unequaled in history. I hope one day to see it in person. And Maria Bárbola was from Austria.

Belgium formerly called Spanish Netherlands formed part of the Spanish empire because this territory was part of a larger one called Duchy of Burgundy. The duke of Burgundy, Charles the Bold, died with only his daughter Mary as heir. Mary married the son of the Holy Roman Emperor, Archduke Maximilian Habsburg. Duchess Mary unfortunately died at 25 in a horse riding accident, and her son Philip, became the new duke of Burgundy at age 4. Archduke Maximilian later in life took his father’s office and became Maximilian I, Holy Roman Emperor. The emperor arranged the marriage of his son, duke Philip of Burgundy, to a Spanish Infanta, Joanna of Castile and Aragon, daughter of the famous Catholic Monarchs, Ferdinand and Isabella. They subsidized Christopher Columbus in his voyage to the west, discovering America in the process. Both Ferdinand and Isabella had older children to Joanna, a daughter and a son, but both died before their parents, and so did their children, making Joanna the new heir to the Spanish kingdoms. Joanna, now heir to the crowns of Castile and Aragon and Philip duke of Burgundy and son of the HRE, had a son and heir named Charles. Then they became queen and king of Castile, after queen Isabella died, and heirs to the crown of Aragon, which conquered both the kingdoms of Navarre and Naples in southern Italy, with the armies of Castile. Soon after becoming king consort of Castile, duke Philip of Burgundy, natural lord of what is today Belgium died. Making his son Charles the next duke of Burgundy. Unfortunately for Charles he was just a child. So his grampa the emperor Maximilian educated him and governed the duchy of burgundy until he reached a majority. His mother was unfortunately mentally unstable, she was called Joanna the Mad, and her father Ferdinand of Aragon took over ruling Castile and finishing the conquest of Navarre and Naples I mention earlier. Then king Ferdinand died when young Charles had just reached his majority, and since his mother was still considered not capable of ruling, he became king of both kingdoms jure matris, through his mother. Later he became emperor of the Holy Roman Empire once grampa Maximilian died, and became even more powerful. When emperor / king / duke Charles married, he married his cousin the oldest daughter of the king of Portugal, infanta Isabella. They had a son and heir named Philip. After reigning for 40 years, emperor king duke Charles divided his territory, his Spanish inheritance and the dukedom of Burgundy went to his son, and his imperial title to his brother the disputed king of Hungary, Ferdinand. Charles died a year later. King and duke Philip, son of emperor king duke Charles, as his father, became duke of Burgundy, and ruler of proto Belgium. Then after him his son and his grandson and his great grandson. So that my friends is how proto Belgium became part of the Spanish empire. Through inheritance.

And I knew that: " the Baroque style began at the start of the 17th century in Rome, then spread rapidly to France, northern Italy, Spain, and Portugal, then to Austria, southern Germany, and Russia. By the 1730s, it had evolved into an even more flamboyant style, called rocaille or Rococo, which appeared in France and Central Europe until the mid to late 18th century. The first building in Rome to have a Baroque facade was the Church of the Gesù in 1584 while for the Spanish the first major work in this style was the San Isidro Chapel in Madrid, begun in 1643 by Pedro de la Torre." Oh well, what do I know what to read :)

Napoles a colony? So Hannover was a colony of Britain?
@danmur2797
@danmur2797 11 ай бұрын
The Spanish didn't exactly have colonies the way the British did. The British sent prisoners and persecuted religious Protestant sects to its colonies. The Spanish often sent members of the nobility including extended family members of the Spanish royal family. Many of the early conquistadors were a part of such nobility. The Spanish established viceroyalties in Europe and the Americas which were more closely akin to another kingdom of the unified Spanish Empire. In theory anyway they held a similar position to Castile, Navarre, Leon, etc. In practice they held a lot of economic power, perhaps more than most of the kingdoms within the Iberian peninsula. Southern Italy had a viceroy same as the Viceroyalty of New Spain (modern Mexico), Viceroyalty of Peru, and so on. In fact sometimes the viceroys were transferred among the viceroyalties at one point overseeing New Spain then a few years later transferred to Southern Italy. The daughter of one of the Spanish viceroys in southern Italy became the wife of a Medici heir in northern Italy. The Medicis were trying to strengthen their position in Europe by marrying into what was Spanish crown aligned. The Medici and Spanish marriage produced children whose heirs eventually came to rule over every major European royal house, including in the Italian states, Austria, Spain, Portugal, England, the German states, the Scandinavian states, and France. Marie Antoinette was such a descendant of the Medici-Spanish viceroy marriage match.
