It's ironic that Rishi Sunak joined a farmers protest in Wales against Labour where they blocked the roads with tractors, it was the same time that demonstrators were arrested and subsequently jailed for 'conspiring' to do the same in London.

As someone who was stopped by some of the protests, particularly the Dartford Bridge and M25 Gantry protests, it wasn't the protestors that stopped the traffic. It was the Police, to be accurate. The Protestors were pretty much out of harms way and the traffic could have carried on. The Police with a "Duty of Care" felt for everyone's safety traffic should be stopped! Me, I think the Police should have just let the traffic flow until the Protestors got bored!😀 And that is from someone who is sympathetic to their ideas!

@@KeldonA Fair point and to be honest I was being a tad flippant, hence the smiley! However, I do think that, on a wider issue, people's ability to protest is increasingly being restricted, particularly when Big Business (and friends & Doners of Governments') are involved. (King's Coronation for example, direct protests against Oil Companies, Arms Manufacturers..........) The point about this thread is that it seems alright for Boris to plan to break the Law (for his own ends) but not people who seem to want to protect our future and have altruistic values, rather than selfish!. In law 'conspiracy' or 'joint enterprise' is a charge which is treated with much more severity in the courts. Now of course - with the Post Office inquiry it is blindingly obvious to anyone who has followed the proceedings that 'conspiracy' should be right at the top of any future charge sheet. However that seems unlikely - given the massive extent of the conspiracy and the involvement of 'establishment' figures, such as government ministers and senior civil servants. Direct action pressure groups have no such protection and therefore the individuals concerned are subject to the full force of the law. Is this right - clearly not - but it comes with a constitution of 'entitlement' which means that the prosecution system and the courts will always give the 'high and mighty' much more latitude than the ordinary man or woman on the street.

It’s not only that but “obstruction of a highway” wasn’t a criminal offence before the 2022 law changes that also brought in the idea of conspiracy to cause a public nuisance aka the anti-protesting law. I believe previously obstructing a highway was treated as a civil matter where you could get fined for doing it but not much more unless I am mistaken. Then they updated it to a criminal offence and brought in potential jail sentence up to 51 weeks. 🤔🤷

The way Just Stop Oil conduct their protests... I am surprised the public have not taken full violent action. Why is it that their right to protest overrides peoples right to live their life? It is not peaceful when people's lives are disrupted, the anxiety people have when knowing they are late for work, a flight or being anxious about an important event being missed... One of the Stonehenge guard quit after Just Stop Oil's stunt... People talk about importance of mental health... why is this suddenly fine?
@jymsc

You can make this same argument in reverse. Why do business's right to "make money" override everyone else's rights to live a normal healthy life? I can give you a direct example, the town I was born in has a giant factory that spews smog all day, every day. As a result, my brothers and I are the first in our entire family history to have asthma. I have a lifelong illness which has lead to hospitalisation more times than I can count - the first being at just 6 months old, after which I am lucky to be alive - most likely due to growing up besides a factory. Why does the factory owner's right to make money override our right to live normal healthy lives?
@iLAGnDC
@iLAGnDC 6 ай бұрын
@@jymsc Either your family moved there while the factory was present or it got built and started running before or after you were born. Either way, your parents either CHOSE to move there knowing or after it opening decided to stay. A choice was made not to move. Business has a right to run but you also have a right to autonomy. Your example is more like you having a smoker friend and he smoked cigarettes near you everytime... an finding you developed cancer and started blaming your friend... You CHOSE to be in proximity... What choice were the motorists given when stuck in hours long traffic? If they knew this was going to happen, I am sure they would have CHOSE a different route. They are literally imprisoning law abiding citizens for hours for their own ideals...
