Why Water Purification Isn’t as Simple as You Think

Many years ago, in the Army, we put clear water in a gallon glass jug and set it out in the sun for 6 hours. That brewed 6 tea bags into sun tea and the sunlight serilized the water. Sunlight is a great sterilizer if you need a backup planr. When using the sterlipen, I would use a coffee filter first. Any particles in the water can protect the microbes from the pen. Good video. I don’t use the SteriPen, but I do double-(actually triple)-filter my water. Stage 1 is a bandanna pre-filter. Stage 2 is either a Platypus QuickDraw or a Sawyer Squeeze. Stage 3 is a Grayl. More effective than the SteriPen (removes bacteria and viruses AS WELL as heavy metals and phosphates), and much faster (10-15 seconds vs 45 seconds…). As far as longevity, I’m over 2 years on my current QuickDraw with no signs of flow rate slowing, but I have religiously pre-filtered with the bandanna.

Which one of those kills a virus? It's not the squeeze or the Platy so is it the Grayl? Good info. Thank you

@@AdventureQuencher The Grayl doesn’t kill viruses, it removes them. 99.99999% - the HUGE benefit (especially around mining areas or farms) is that it removes the heavy metals and phosphates.

.1 micron is my pre filter, UF filter 0.01 micron, NF 0.001 micron, RO water 0.0001 Micron+DI=0TDS water. Only water that is completely pure

As a future hiker I was shocked to find Sawyer and Befree doesn't remove germs, viruses, heavy metals, fertilizer, herbicides, insecticides, and probably more!!!! After further research, reading Sawyer's info they sell a filter that does, of coarse it costs more than a regular filter, you get what you pay for.

Actually that's not totally true. The Sawyer, Befree and Platypus all stop 99.9999% of germs, metals etc. The only thing they don't stop is a virus because they are too small. Please don't worry too much about that. The only real concern is a virus, which this Steripen does quite well.

I've used Steripen in Australia for a few years. If there is sediment in the water I filter using a fine Chux cloth with elastic band around the top of the bottle. I like that virus's are inactive after the UV treatment. Downside is having to take wide mouth bottle. Thanks for comprehensive video.
