The father’s character was so upsetting he never took full responsibility for what he did to his son. Even when he was trying to check in with the daughter he expressed his regrets but never came out and voiced how he pushed Tyler over the edge. That was unsettling.
@RJ-qs6nm3 жыл бұрын
@@2buscuits because he's imperfect, because he's a human being. The father is not a bad guy. He pushed his son too much, yes, but in no way is that an excuse for the sons actions. The son isn't a bad guy either, he was lost and made a mistake that cost him everything. Same thing applies to people criticizing the second half because the daughter needs to find peace in a man.. If you haven't noticed, this is why the film is brilliant. None of the characters are necessarily good or bad, perfect or evil. They are simply human. It is a constant theme in the movie - there is a lot of pain and mistakes that happen in life which cannot necessarily be blamed on one sole person or reason. Things just happen. But in the words of the father, all we have is now.

This is a perfectly, beautifully written review. "Waves" is both a traumatic experience and a healing one. I'm so glad I caught it on the big screen -- to be honest, there was a moment when the experience became so intense, I thought, "I can't do this" and nearly walked out of the theater. But luckily I didn't, because once the film had seared into me like a hot knife, it provided the balm I needed to heal from that very injury. And I'm pretty sure I'm seeing it again tomorrow. What I can't for the life of me understand is how it was completely passed over by the Academy. It should have been nominated in every category.
@thefeels68485 ай бұрын
This is so beautifully said. I found myself pausing often not wanting to face the aftermath of the tragedy and then bracing myself to try to get through it. Then feeling optimistic about life all over again with certain scenes.

My hunch is that this film will find its audience. It got lost at the end of the year, despite the good reviews, and needed awards attention it didn't get. But people will eventually see it and remember it. Shults is one of the children of those '70s New Hollywood filmmakers (Altman, Bogdanovich, Malick, Scorsese, Allen, Schrader, etc.), some of whom are gone now, others still with us but with more behind than ahead. It's great to see talented young men and women tending the flame in their different ways, telling stories about complicated people.

This film was just something else, high key this review is really accurate. Waves is such a story about how one tragic incident can do to one or a family. Every member of that family, in their stories, can be very relatable in a way. It has been about two years since I seen Waves, but I do remember that last act made me weep. This was a good film. #A24 #Waves

I think the unironic and sincere use of bible quotes in key moments of the film (sermon at the begining - conclusion of the conversation between father and daughter) really needs to be mentioned. It really reenforces, why people do lead a life in faith, which is so often covered up in politics and hatred, forgetting what it can do and mean to people. This is rarely ever shown realistically in movies sadly.

I can’t help but compare this movie to Moonlight. I know they are two very different stories but I feel like they’re similar in that they both explored childhood trauma and tragedy. Idk why but Moonlight spoke to me way more than Waves... something about the direct and specific follow through with the characters. I kept feeling like I didn’t know the full emotional and motivational story of what each character was going through in Waves as many scenes built conflict and then just cut to another scene without (or with delayed) explanations of how the friends and family were effected...

(mild spoiler) I did not have any empathy for the son Tyler in the family. Especially when he told his gf he'll listen without getting mad, my ex used to do that ALL the time and he would get so mad at me, and the inconsistency of the son just reminded me so much of my ex and I did not get why he doesn't just be fucking honest with himself and with the people around him. I loved the sister so much. she did not deserve all the shit and i'm glad that she got a happy hopeful future ending. and I liked the scene where the dad says don't hold on to all that hate. I also hold a lot of hate towards my brother, and his deeds in the past, and though I have a distant relationship to both of my parents, still felt like maybe somewhere they would want me to not hold on to hate either. I liked the movie overall but damn Tyler just be like the smallest bit considerate or mature oh my god. obviously I'm biased but oh my GOD

Watched Waves last night and did enjoy it, however it did feel quite long to me and i think it could have benefited from being trimmed down a bit. At a certain point it just felt drawn out and i had endured enough ice bucket splashes of emotion and wanted some more from the story. After hearing that Trey Edward Shults pieced together his own life experiences and allowed cast members to tack on their own, it makes sense why to me the film felt like an emotional collage but also too bunched together and unnecessarily lengthy. Waves story structure resembles Derek Cianfrance's "the place beyond the pines" in where the main character is swiftly removed from the story, mid movie and we're introduced to a new lead as the story completely evolves into something new. But i felt "place beyond the pines" had a better story, charcters and was more than just a barrage of feeling. All in all, i did enjoy Waves, the acting, the camera work and it's themes but a bit more time in the editing room could have helped
@essel23fly4 жыл бұрын
I agree. It’s a great movie but pacing is an issue and I think that’s what’s kept it from being perfect. Everything in it makes sense though but the drawn out parts really stick out. Also what would have helped is introducing the sister a bit better in the first half so we’re not left saying oh ok now it’s a movie about her. Because we barely got to know her.
