Hello from Cotacachi, I lived in Salinas for 8 months and didn't care for it so I moved back to Cotacachi. I lived in Florida (5 minutes from the beach = causeway) for 16 years and I miss the warmth and sunny sky weather. Cotacachi has been COLD and rainy for 6 months now. Would you please video areas of Manta that are off the beaten path. A few blocks in so to speak. I'm seriously considering moving to Manta but I'm on a fixed income (73 years young) and need to see what it's like. I had a friend tell me he didn't like Manta as he said it is a dirty city, but I don't see that in you videos. How's the insect situation? Thank you kindly.

I am glad you are enjoying Manta as I love visiting there, even if there are some places that have a strong fish smell. Before the pandemic you could meet some interesting travelers along the malecon when a cruise ship was in port. I smile as I watch you stroll down the beach and hope you have enjoyed a refreshing drink from the Mall del Pacifico as you watch the ocean after searching for a tech item of interest. If you had not lived in Cuenca, Olon , and visited so many other parts of Ecuador first, you might not have appreciated many benefits of Manta. Thank you for sharing and I await your stories of new adventures as you go to Bahia and other places up the coast. I have walked many a mile for exercise past the houses and shops behind the mall down to the bus station and beyond. Not sure if worthy of your videos but always a good walk with some hills too. Thank you for continuing to inform. Another former Kansas City area boy that always appreciates you JP and your lovely wife.

Excellent video! I love you two and have enjoyed your blog for about 3 years. The last three videos I watched... all re. Manta, has me convinced that this is the destination that I and my wife, Diana, have been searching for. We have looked nearly everywhere that people looking for an overseas home have considered. We had a 4-week time share in Mexico for trips, as we used to travel there several times a year, but we wanted more (and MX is getting scary again.) We'd "winter" (away from Chicago) in Florida for 45-65 days most years (actually for about 10) in rentals, but we wanted our own nest in a great location to enjoy life as we age. We just couldn't decide where and pull the trigger. A big problem/concern is how we can get our (last) pup, now 4 years old, diabetic and nearly 13.5 lbs. (too big for an under-seat carrier) to an overseas location. Would anyone/everyone provide us with dog transport options to evaluate... please!

My father was employed by a US construction company hired by the Ecuadorian government to build a highway that would speed transport of bananas to the coast for export. For the 6th grade and my first year of secondary school, I lived in Guayaquil...until I was sent back to the States for school. I flew to and from Manta in a twin-engine Cessna operated by Braniff, the same carrier that later grew into a major international airline. Manta was still a tiny fishing town, not much more than a village of low buildings and a landing strip in 1955. A deep-water port was under construction, but Manta’s streets were still unpaved except for the initial stretch of the highway to Quevedo in the interior. I recall riding in a jeep on the beach watching huge lizards run in the sand beside us. We stayed in nearby Portoviejo from where the construction company managed highway construction logistics. I thoroughly enjoy your Ecuador videos! It was quite amazing for me to see your video of present-day Manta. I would love to visit there again!

AS RETIREES, we now realize we must stay close to MEDICAL facilities. Funny what 15 years will do ! Back in the early 2000's, we lived in the mountains outside a medium-sized city in Costa Rica, and had NO problems. NOW, it seems like we're "chained" to doctors' offices, clinics, pharmacies, and hospitals !

I lived in Manta for a very short while (maybe 9 months with my ex) when I was hired to help set up a small air taxi charter airline that had its maintenance base there but served the Galapagos islands. I was their director of maintenance, but they were up to some shifty stuff so I did not want to stay there long. I was born in New York City and I did not come to Ecuador to become a Criminal if I wanted that I could have made a lot more money by doing that in the United States. I rented a house close to the airport which was very convenient And I used to have breakfast every morning at this beach market where all the fishermen come to sell their catch to the truckers that would take it all over Ecuador. They made these little stands to sell fresh seafood to the truckers and the food was kick ass and super cheap and super fresh I highly recommend it. I Especially like the fish cebiche which was made Manabi style with a lot of MANI (Peanuts) if you haven't figured it out yet MANI is where they get the name MANAbi.

When we went there (in 2000) we flew in early, got a hotel, looked down the beach and saw a bunch of sea gulls circling and decided to explore. local fishermen were bringing in their catch. For a few dollars you could buy a fresh caught fish, have someone clean and cook it right there. Very few things in the world that I have enjoyed more.
