I don’t understand why the Colombian government doesn’t sell Westerners long-term visas for a large sum? That could address the budget deficit caused by COVID, and most Westerners would pay it because living on Colombia cuts their cost of living by thousands per month.

If so, all countries in the region would be doing it, governments are not stupid, they have good reasons not to do it, maybe Pedro Castillo in Peru will light up his brain and do it, maybe Alberto Fernandez in Argentina will do it or maybe not, maybe the next president of Colombia will do it and it is most likely because the most likely candidate has several proposals in his campaign for the presidency.

If you have a foreign fiance they can come into the country on a 90 day visa with the intent that you both need to marry within 90 days. Maybe the same idea applies here, but instead its contingent of him establishing his citizenship in the country?

I visited over 20 countries and I believe that this could create serious problems. What happened here probably immigration officer, or lawyer told them few words of sympathy and tap on their shoulders. It is completely different thing what immigration officer will do when she attemps to enter Colombia next time. It could easily go either way!

@Kam Y That's not completely true. Especially if you have overstayed more than just a few days. We actually had some issues at the migration office before leaving the country. So again, it depends on how long you're overstaying.

That's common. Native Colombians have a hard time getting US Visas as well.

Talk to a lawyer. Since, you're married to a Colombian, it should be easy to apply for a marriage visa.

@@mateor7302 Not true. Boring because you haven’t discovered the island, happens all the time to tourists. Expensive because there is a darn good reason for it, a) Maui has the cleanest air in the world, freshest & cleanest local fish, lots of local organic produce, super friendly people, no gangs, no ghettos, lowest crimes in the nation, best medical insurance in the nation, super peaceful aloha living. For a good life my friend there is always a cost 😉. Now as far as the overbearing covid restrictions yes that’s true but only to new arrivals at the airport, and if not tested by the right provider can lead to a mandatory flight back or a 10 day quarantine. However, once you’re here, we don’t feel any covid restrictions other than a mask here and there, as everywhere else other than Florida maybe. Florida population = 23million, Maui = 168k. Maui is as close as it will get to paradise when everything is taken into consideration.

@@GeraKosmos Not convincing ... Maui and the entire state of Hawai'i is very expensive. Even the locals that a born in Hawai'i are forced to leave because of very low employment or none at all. Beaches, sand & sun is not enough to live by. Jobs, liveable wages and financial security is what one needs to live anywhere. 168,000 people on that island should tell you why no one stays in Maui to live. Don't think you are convincing anyone to go live in Maui. ONE LOVE!

We always just carried one phone with us, and we've been fine. Just as in any bigger city, don't be careless with your belongings. You can take pictures and then just put your phone back in your pocket. No problem at all.
