The lake is not that bad. Our kids swim in it often. I have swam in it with them. It is a shallow lake full of sediment and plants and algae so it does not look good. But birds come here, fish live here, it is rebounding.

I think the woman in time 5:14 said that she has been making that kind of crafts for 60 years(now she is 80 years old). She didn't say that it took her 60 years to learn how to make the handicraft. :) Vendedor for men, vendedora for women. :)

even tho you look cute in that dress it's the 80 year old elder with her sweet smile that got my attention...and as for lake chapala s .. i'd say the work has been good on cleaning over the years and it doesn't smell like it once did but not pristine...water hyacinth is a problem and folks were talking about opting for chemical spraying and lets hope clearer minds prevailed...the locals let their kids play in the water now and eat the fish, i'd watch just how much local fish is consumed until i got a study based on truth and not the tourist dollar..i'd like to see a chemical analysis before trusting ..particularly mercury levels..blame was put on farming alot but factory and corporate run-offs i think had more to do with it..then there were the low levels that the lake went through and all i could find was a note about Guadalajara and it's water needs having something to do with it... interesting fact..Lake Chapala is considered a Sacred Lake going back at least a thousand years..heard that even today there are those who practice ceremony there... so yes, trying to find out all i can about the condition of this beautiful lake, looking into everything about the lake if anyone can enlighten us sure would appreciate it..water is sacred.

We spent the first four months of 2018 in Ajijic and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Like you, we drove down (from Chicago) and had an awesome drive crossing at Colombia (Laredo) passing through Saltillo - San Luis Potosi - Guadalajara then to Ajijic. We're retired Gringos nearing 70 and never once felt unsafe the entire 5,000 mile round trip and 4 month stay. I think you guys would love the tacos (especially the shrimp) at Lake Tacos - turn left at the Walmart intersection and it's behind the Pemex after you pass the mall. You will see lots of smoke across the road from a vendor selling grilled chicken - best chicken in the area and makes for a fast meal when you get back home. Adelitas restaurant in Riberas has a beautiful courtyard with great food and you guys will love the Tuesday organic market west of Ajijic near the cemetery. Keep up your great videos!

I simply love the energy and content of Tangerine Travels! I’m a Nana and looking at retiring to the Lake Chapala area. I watch a couple other sites about the area already, including Jerry Brown Travels. I like the idea of having the resources of Ajijic available but think I might enjoy some place further off the Expat track. I’ve seen an area called Mazamitla that seems more in a forested environment. If you get a chance, I’d love for you guys to visit and give your first-hand impression. Is it too far removed? I realize that when I’m drooling in my jello I’ll have to check into one of the great assisted living places the area has to offer. But I am looking for that step right before that event. Loved your take on Chapala. Love Nana on a fixed income!

Thank you so much for the lovely compliments, LC! We have been to Mazamitla once, but would love to go back again and stay in a cabin for a few days. If you search “Mazamitla Tangerine Travels” you’ll probably find our video there. We loved it! Very cute town. And yes, much more foresty. 😄🌲🐿

Love your video channel. Very interesting and informative. Ajijic is one of the best places in Mexico. Elevation is the same as Denver and it is on the same latitude as Hawaii. Truly one of the best climates on Earth and close to Guadalajara as well as Puerto Vallarta. I personally think you two Tangerinies should settle down in Ajijic and use it as your base of operations. Top-notch video as always. Thank you both.

Very enjoyable video, one of their best. Good variety of activities. I particularly enjoyed the bus rides. We often spend time in Merida in the winter to escape Chicago's brutal weather. We have stopped renting a car because driving in Merida can be quite stressful. Being larger than Merida, I imagine driving in Guadalajara is even more difficult. We rent places in Merida's centro where everything is compact. We walk and take buses everywhere. At eight pesos, taking a bus is a great bargain. I also enjoyed the shopping for produce in the market. Posting Mexican/U.S. prices is interesting and helpful.

I know this video is old, but thought of sharing an insight about buying crafts and clothes, specially from indigenous communities (not sure if that's where Maddie got her blouse tho). The things they struggle the most with are: discrimination and low pay for their work. It is suggested not to bargain on their products because they take so much time to make, it's usually their only income and mostly everyone always tries to pay less. When you pay the full price, you're honoring their work, just like you do when you go to any normal store. I've worked with indigenous communities and learned this from them. So, try to avoid the bargain and take the full price, it really makes a difference for them and you're supporting local communities :)

I have done buses from Chapala to Joco. I shopped for many needed items at Walmart but most at tiendas. Bus to Walmart & taxi back for less than $5.00. Also drove to Barre de Navidad.
