Why we'll never get a game like Battlefield 1 again

It's been 6 years since battlefield 1 was released, and still, even in 2023, there's not a single multiplayer first-person shooter like it. Revisiting the game made me realize the level of issues and decline in passion in the gaming industry, especially after looking at some of its core values, its immersion, and its atmosphere.
I love battlefield 1, and I always will, it's one of the most ambitious games ever created for me that connects deeply to my heart, showcasing war in the way it's meant in its depravity. It really shows how Dice has completely abandoned their care for newer releases, including battlefield 2042, which is still quite the failure.
This is a Video Essay NOT A REVIEW, going into the depths of battlefield 1 and explaining why it's hard to get another game like it (BF1)

agreed with atmosphere being a big feature a lot of fps forget. I remember playing Gears of War as a kid and the sheer horror of what the world was and what it could become if the cogs weren't victorious sent chills down my spine.

I love that they went back to WW1 because, like you said, people saw WW1 as the boring counterpart to WW2, but WW1 was way more brutal and is where a lot of the geneva convention comes from. It did an amazing job honoring the veterans of WW1 and the soldiers who died and giving people a new found respect for the sacrifice people made. I think WW1 is worse than WW2 because they fought and died for what must've felt like nothing to them since WW2 happened anyway Also, I love the way they did character customization, or lack thereof. The game wasn't about you as a soldier, like 2042 or V, but about you as a part of a army. You weren't the main character, just another cog

Also, I'm glad they left politics out of this game. It's disrespectful to try to insert personal beliefs and politics into a piece of media about a terrible, bloody conflict, like they tried with BFV

Battlefield 1 was just a work of art, DICE really took their time and put in a good amount of effort to get the historical experience just right… it’s a shame the DICE team that created this is no longer the same team working on the newer battlefields

I agree. I couldn't fathom the hate the game had at launch and how everyone said it was a huge step down from BF3 and BF4. I've played every battlefield game in the franchise (excluding 2042) and I feel this is the best work they've done.

BF1 has a few controversial risks it took, many of which I'd argue it executed relatively well considering how it compares to the rest of the franchise. However? One thing I think everyone can agree is that BF1 probably has the best _"character designs"_ for the 4(+4) separate classes. Especially considering there are 9 different factions at play! While not necessarily historically accurate to actual WWI uniforms, it takes this liberty to stay as authentic to the period it can be while keeping silhouettes and details recognizable at a glance. Assaults are moderately equipped with a variety of gear on their persons, but most recognizable is their tight stature, they all wear a light-duty helmet (barring Red-Army), and carry around large explosives by their hips. Medics have a slight variety in helmets and hats, but due to the crutches they universally carry on their backs alongside with their slightly larger stance to hold SLRs? They're differentiated quite easily from everyone as a high priority target. Supports are the ones equipped with the heaviest looking gear, typically wearing some very heavy-duty helmets with face protection, in addition to bandoliers, backpacks, and pouches galore. Combined with the sheer size of their LMGs held by the hips, they standout quite easily. Scouts are the lightest equipped, with many preferring hats over helmets even. Some even have poncho capes to further differentiate their overall design that distinguishes them easily as well. Considering how Bolt actions are utilized at range? Alongside with their scope glint, you can tell it's a Scout. And despite this all? They still took the time to make Pilots, Tankers, Cavalry, and Elite classes distinct from the others. Pilots have their extremely lengthy scarfs and sparse equipment, Tankers wear helmets with chainmail face protection combined with a fairly basic load out too, and Cavalry are distinguished with their crude chest platearmor for some protection. Elites aren't exactly the most warmly received change for power weapon pickups, but if there's one thing we can say for certain? They standout from the rest with extremely unique designs, recognizable and feared rightfully for the power they wield. All of this makes not for an accurate historical take on WW1, but an authentic and respectful effort to make the setting & atmosphere feel believable with creative liberties. There's never gonna be another Battlefield that does as amazing of a job as BF1 did it, which is a shame considering BF2042 & BFV only ever needed to keep building on this very foundation. Rather than having an Evolution of Battlefield character design? They chose to do a Revolution, because everyone else had success in it. But it does this at the cost of what made Battlefield unique from its contemporary shooters, and I certainly believe this has been a major stepback for the franchise as a whole.

Atmosphere is so important. The HUD is minimal, the sound design is downright the best out of any FPS game ever made, and you’re not bothered too frequently by the commentators. It lets the battles speak for itself. I can’t wait to see this channel take off, subscribed.

This was my first BF. And this game made me try the whole series. I was playing COD everyday. And one day I played BF1, now I play a different battlefield every so often tbh. You always learn or gain a new skill by playing different battlefields. If you’re trying to get into BF, accept dying a lot, accept playing slow and accept the recoil. Once you learn this game, rushing becomes easier. Way easier. This game really is about strategy and thinking. Call of duty is about reaction. Don’t give up!

Excellent, well-thought out video that absolutely deserves thousands of views soon. When I first saw the trailer for this game in 2016, that was the first time I truly felt like I saw a next gen game. Was really the only game i really wanted for next gen! Ended up not getting an xbone til 2020 but managed to play this masterpiece a year from my roommate, and maaaaaan what a magical experience. Came back to it 2 months ago after getting burned out on MW2 and have no desire to go back atm. 💚

Some people just don't care about the immersion, art, and experience in games like others. One of my friends who is a failed streamer plays games literally all day, but all he does is play the new Call of Duty or the latest Battle Royale and only cares about winning. When I asked him why he spends so much time in games just to "win" he said "I play them to pass time". That is why the game industry is dying, because devs will cater to people like him who just want to "pass time" instead of appreciating a authentic and immersive experience.

1:58 The 1916 Brusilov Offensive proved to be the worst crisis of World War I for Austria-Hungary, and the Triple Entente's greatest victory. But it came at a tremendous loss of life for both sides. And without the promised support of Russia's other armies, much of the territory gained by Brusilov was lost to the Germans arriving from the west. It is a sad irony that in the end, it was a political collapse in Russia, not a military defeat, that would decide the outcome of this region's war."

If battlefield V was a straight up reskin of battlefield 1 then i would have been fine. BF1 was my first realist fps, and i loved it. When i got BF-V i was disappointed, it just felt like BF1 but worse. The movement was more fluid, but it wasn't more fun, the tanks were less interesting to play and the classes just felt off. Dont even get me started on the fact that anyone can heal. The fact that the eastern front and the sino-japanese front weren't included was also really disappointing.

I've said this for years now, if BF1 had simply been copy and pasted into a WW2 setting with the same Premium/Paid-DLC system it would've probably been the greatest FPS ever made-at least in terms of pure atmosphere/fun-chaotic-cinematic gameplay. With the same level of dedication to historical accuracy and authenticity of course, and considering the era it'd be a lot less restrictive to be more historically accurate in regards to there being less prototype weaponry (though some German Wunderwaffe's and the like would be most welcome)-since the main firearms in use weren't bolt action rifles; storming Normandy beach in a game of operations, no goofy player models or cosmetic customization or screeching-screaming women, charging out of the landing craft into machine gun fire up the hills, flamethrowing the pillboxes, maps like Stalingrad and ideally the Italin Front, Africa, the Pacific, it's truly a crime how bad BFV was and the potential that was squandered. That's also what happens when most of the dev team hadn't worked on a previous title and you put cancerous woke ideology before quality and history and logic and even fun.

I'm late to this video, but I have to say THANK YOU. You nailed my thoughts about immersion. There were two titles for me, that went this extra mile to create this immersion and these two titles are of course Battlefield 1 and Star Wars Battlefront 1 (2015). While Battlefield 1 is the mechanically far superior game (because - and this is not a slap towards Star Wars Battlefront 2015 - Battlefront 2015 took the approach of a more casual shooter), I have to say, that both games are DICE's peak in terms of immersion and - directly coupled with that - atmosphere. They used Photogrammetry for Star Wars Battlefront 1, 2015 to recreate many of the in-game models of the troopers and props directly out of the Lucasfilm archieves and they even photo-scanned the locations were the Original Trilogy of Star Wars was shot. The outcome was the most immersive Star Wars game...to date and my favorite Star Wars game ever. They clearly took the quantity over quality approach for Star Wars Battlefront 2 2017, which had more content, but it was lacking this atmosphere. After Star Wars Battlefront, they used photogrammetry again for Battlefield 1 and took a setting, that could not become much darker: WW I. So they created their second most immersive and atmospheric title, that is on par with Star Wars Battlefront 2015. These two games are the most immersive games, I have ever played.

Battlefield 1 is the only game that old that I still play, I've bullied some of my friends into buying it on sales so I can have more people to play with. Genuinely one of the only games I bought when I moved from a console to a PC. The other being Titanfall 2 because they were the only games I really cared all that much about playing and owning. I was extremely upset when the game got overrun by hackers that DICE/EA did nothing about until private server owners stepped up and actually started working on the issue. And same with Titanfall 2 and EA/Respawn just cutting the anticheat it seems as you need to use the private northstar client to even play the game properly anymore. I feel its just a conspiracy by DICE because not enough people are playing their newer games because they're soulless copies of other games with boring microtransactions and live service systems. None of their original audience cares about any of that. Just the new audience they're trying to pander to, and none of them have any interest in the franchise or oftentimes even videogames themselves. Its just sad to see a company that used to be worthwhile failing utterly and completely due to some stupid corporate greed. The lack of competitive salaries is also abysmal in the industry as the whole cabal has agreed to just pay a maximum of 70k and a starting of 40k. I'm really happy to have seen this video, I hope your channel can get bigger and that you'll keep making this wonderful content.

The maps in BFV were just bad, the operations mode was too short and most of the maps had bottlenecks attackers couldnt get past, and the customization options made the game feel way too cartooney. IMO the game SHOULDNT give us the option of how we look, we should all be generic soliders, they focus way too much on customization instead of good maps and gameplay. BF1 maps felt like epic journies, but after BF1 it feels like a 1st year SJW made the maps.
