I have fond memories of rocking out to Collective Soul's December with my middle school buddies in the back of whoever's parent's minivan was carting us to and fro sportsball (thank you for that, by the way, all the parents that were my parents including my own parents). Now with a third of a lifetime of guitar and music exploration under my belt I can express to you why we love December so much. Not the month... December in Pittsburgh is atrocious.

True story! I grew up in a small town in Georgia and went to purchase my class ring in 97. The owner of the ring shop is cousins with Shane Evans, the drummer from the band. I was wearing a Collective Soul shirt and she asked, "Do you want to meet the drummer?" I asked, "Huh?" She said, "Your shirt. My cousin's the drummer. He's in the back." She called for him to come out and he came around and met me. Really cool dude. He signed my shirt. I will always have a soft spot for Collective Soul. I've been a fan from the first moment, I heard "Shine," in 94.

It was cool to hear Ed describe why he wanted to write a song that is the same chord progression the entire time.

@@jwmanzAgree. The story about him piecing together a reel-to-reel tape in 2 minute sections of leftover tape to record his demo was really cool too. And using a toilet paper roll for the "yeah" effect on Shine was awesome. 😂

This is one of those intros that just reach out of the speaker and slap you in the face--in a sweetly compelling way--perhaps because of those off-the-reservation-notes. What a positively educational review of this song. Just as an aside: living anywhere north of St. Louis should be illegal unless conducted in seasonally warmer months only.

Should do “Save It For Later” by The English Beat. Heard because of its unique tuning, guitar gods Pete Townshend and David Gilmore couldn’t even figure it out til they called the singer/guitarist to find out how he did it.

@@RyanLendt From Wikipedia "Save It for Later" features a unique DADAAD tuning that Wakeling stumbled upon; he explained, "I had tried to tune my guitar to DADGAD to play along with Jon (sic) Martyn tunes in late 70's before the English Beat started. I accidentally came up with DADAAD, so I made up my own chord shapes and enjoyed the hypnotic drone of the tuning on my national steel for hour after hour." Due to the song's atypical tuning, Who guitarist Pete Townshend called Wakeling to ask how to play the song.

this goes right along with my theory that time is moving backwards. think about it. Starting with you... you have a mom and a dad. that's two people. Your mom and dad each had a mom and dad, that's four people. In those three generations 4 people have turned into one, and yet the population of earth is increasing. the only possible explanation is that time is moving backwards toward the past when there were more people!
