Today we're in Iriga City and showing you why we love small town Philippines!
Iriga city and the Bicol region in general isn't visited by foreign tourists and I've no idea why.
The nature is beautiful, people are friendly and food is delicious.
We spent the day exploring Iriga city, eating local food in the markets, and just seeing what the provinces are like in The Philippines 🇵🇭

Go to Daraga Church in Albay, it's on a hilltop, and you can see the full beauty of Mayon volcano- if there are no clouds. LOL or go to Kawa-kawa Hills, in Ligao City, Albay. It's another hilltop attraction, and has the full view of Ligao City and many neighboring rural towns.

Indian mango, that's what the lady in the market was eating which is a different type of mango, eaten mostly when still green. It's small and not sweet, just crunchy. Taho is a popular quick breakfast or snack on the go.

Irigeño is a sub-variant of Rinconada Bicol, which in turn one of the languages in Bicol. Bicolano actually is composed of many languages and dialects, but you can just group them into 2- Central Bicolano (inland), and Coastal Bicolano. The other is the Northern variant is spoken in Catanduanes.

The leaves used for laing are dried taro leaves. Taro is gabi in tagalog. If you like laing you would love Bicol Express. Although called Bicol Express this dish was invented in Manila in the 40s. There was a cooking contest that time and the winning entry was by a lady restaurateur from Santa Ana Manila. She came up with the name Bicol Express because at the time she was contemplating for a name a train bound for Bicol happened to pass by in front of her restaurant.

Damn, those cicadas (the bugs that are making that boise in the trees) were just going off. Which means, it's so hot. They go nuts here too and we have had gnarly temps here in Canada. Now, laing is also one of my faves too. I believe that lady said, "Ma bubu-ot ang mga taga Iriga" ......yup, she definitely said that. I had to pause and rewind. Im not from the samw region but yeah, it loosely translates to "people from Iriga are bice/good" or what the othwr lady said too. I wish you guys can hitnup guimaras for an even more laid back vibe and the mangoes are just THAT MUCH MORE ridiculously delicious. It's a higher standard than normal Pinoy mangoes and even that is already delicious. Sago is btw just tapioca pearls. Happy trails

Taho is a traditional morning snack, gives you that warm sweetness to kickstart your day. This is part of every filipino's childhood that grew up here, no matter rich or poor. It's usually sold between 8-10 am on the streets, some taho vendors walk around and carry it and some have bicycles with a sidecar (these are the vendors that usually cater to rich filipinos, they sell inside exclusive villages). You'll also be able to encounter cold taho on small stores/cafes/restaurants and some milkteas or beverages use taho as a flavor. There is also a strawberry taho which the place Baguio is popular for. Back in early 2000s the small cup of taho only cost 5 pesos, while the bigger one cost 10 pesos. One hack when buying one is handing out your own glass, most of the time, vendors add a litlle more hehe and always remember to ask for extra arnibal! (brown sugar liquid)

Bicol altho they have their own language (Bicolano) , they still speak Tagalog because the whole Bicol Region aka as Region 5 is just right under Region 4 or the Southern Tagalog Region. There are a total of 17 regions in the Philippines. With numbering starting from 1 the top (Northern Luzon Region) and increases as you go down the whole Philippines. That means the region numbers are biggest in the southern Mindanao region where the majority of the Muslims live.
