Outstanding presentation! We really enjoyed both of your commentaries and look forward to hearing more about the Maritimes from you. You appear to be an amazing couple and love your pup snoring in the background as we too have a dog whom we love dearly. We are happy you are enjoying life to its fullest, as you said, and we say as well, Life is too short! Cheers to you both!!

You have touched on a significant point. We have noticed that many lifelong residents of Saint John do not seem to appreciate the city as much as people like us who moved here from away. I suppose it can be difficult to appreciate what you have unless it is put in context of what else is out there. To us, Saint John is the only city in Canada we want to live in now. The beauty of the city and the people is unsurpassed.

Now back to the beginning. Once again, thank you for being honest. I've watched a few videos on New Brunswick that have me rethinking a move there. Too many negative aspects, that I might as well stay here. Talk about fry pan into the fire! Of course I'm doing more research, getting my ducks in a row, but your videos give me encouragement for the journey.

There are a few locals who make a full time job about complaining about the city. Most have never lived anywhere else so they don't understand how good they have it. The Saint John region is an amazing place to live in our opinion, and many others from outside the province are discovering just how much this area has to offer. We have never regretted our decision to move here for one second.

It’s nice to put faces to the voices in the car! As a native of Saint John who was obliged to follow his job to Halifax in 1996, I’ve enjoyed the street by street coverage you provide - it’s a “hands-free” version of Street View that allows me to see what’s new! I knew nothing about the Splash Park on the lower cove loop, for instance. Thanks, and keep it coming!

It was nice to hear your story, as ours was similar in some ways. We sold our place in Feb 2020 and moved to Moncton in April 2020. Covid hit right after we sold the house in Ontario, which created some challenges. We bought a house sight unseen, Which was scary, but like you, we were lucky getting a great realtor. We managed to get our house just before the market went crazy here. We really like it here and like you guys have travelled a lot around the maritimes since moving here. It was a little surreal driving from the north cape of PEI, and seeing one car in two hours, but this was what it was like travelling during covid. Anyway, it was nice hearing about someone else and their experience as it felt like we were the only people that went through moving here during covid.

Thank you very much. We came here in 2018 but I can imagine moving during Covid would have been a big challenge. Thank you so much for doing this!!! This is so informative! My husband and I are your age, with similar values and Ideals. Our young adult child loves nature and wants to get out of the city. They are a business professional looking at working from home. Loves water/ocean...they are interested in BC, think Maritime weather too harsh...I'm going to show them your video! Our child and their significant other asked us if we would move with them! We are excited about the prospect, I'm reseaching off grid acreage on Nelson Island in BC for them, but I'm also gathering info on the Maritimes...100% their choice where they move. Hopefully we can join them...but my gut says New Brunswick is a better fit for us and probably for them, if they can work remotely. Again, I would never tell them what to do, just gathering information on both coasts. Yes, I would love to see more videos about St. Johns and area. And waterfront rural acerage? I look forward to your future videos and will go back and watch more of your past videos! Warmest Regards!!!
@WeLoveSaintJohn
@WeLoveSaintJohn 2 жыл бұрын
Well, we left BC to come here and we won't be going back. I know BC sells itself as some Utopian society but it's really quite the opposite in the opinion of someone who spent their whole life there. Living in the Maritimes, and Saint John specifically, has been such a revelation to us which is I think why we work hard at getting the message out. It almost feels like a duty. Several of our subscribers have made the move from BC, including a family from one of the Gulf islands. The islands are beautiful but even the remotest of them will still be much more expensive than here. But youth. They must experience things for themselves, as they should. Good luck with whatever you and your family decide to do for your futures.

It’s some locals that are negative. Not all.many of us have been trying to change the city for years and things have improved greatly and have in they last 15 years. It’s good to see people come here and also see what we’ve always known. It does make the city less affordable for the rest of us here that do not have the good jobs that allow us to work from home and make decent money to afford the giant climb in rental expense. Hoping those things change as well. Oh and learn to love the rain…that’s what makes a good coffee taste even better by the fire or the radiators. Lol. We love this place and most are aware of the unique culture we have here and East Coast Culture is the best. Maritimers are good people. Salt of the Earth.

Thank you so much for your thoughtful comment. We know that most locals love their city, it's just the negative few that are very vocal about it. Maritimers are the best people we have met anywhere. Coming from the Vancouver area, we don't notice much rain here, but we do enjoy all the seasons in Saint John. We have noticed that housing costs, both for rents and ownership have risen over the last while, which is a shame but that does come with the city becoming more desirable. I'm sorry that people like us moving in drive prices up. We love this city and its people, and after 3+ years here, it would take a crowbar to pry us out of here.

@WeLoveSaintJohn
@WeLoveSaintJohn 2 жыл бұрын
They are high as a percentage but since they are based on assessed value, and assessed values tend to be lower here than the rest of the maritimes, it all sort of evens out. Saint John is an old city with old infrastructure that needs updating, and a relatively small population that receives full services, so i't understandable that taxes may be higher here. Rothesay and Quispamsis have a lower tax rate but higher purchase prices, so you would have to decide what works best for you.

@@nonenone4880 Oh, now I get what you were saying. Yes, I work in Quispamsis so I get to experience the Saint John rush hours. This is another case of perspectives. Where we moved from there were the same number of lanes in the highway but 10-20 times more vehicles on the road any one time. So our perspective of rush hour is different than that of a native Saint Johner. And that's what we were trying to convey to viewers thinking of moving here from other parts of the country.

God bless both of you for your honesty, you were very helpful. I wish you all the best with your new start. My question is, how much enough monthly income should a family of four have to have to live in your city?
@WeLoveSaintJohn
@WeLoveSaintJohn 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you Mohammed. Saint John can cater to almost any income level. Some things are expensive here but housing is very affordable compared to the rest of Canada. How much income you need really depends on the type of lifestyle you desire so I can't really answer that question.

Your story is so similar to ours, it's uncanny: we also met online, for us it was playing a video game, we're celebrating our 16th wedding anniversary this month, we live in a condo in Ottawa, ON, and we've been thinking of moving to New Brunswick for quite some time now. I've been scouring the real estates sites looking at properties and there are so many we like and within our budget. We're currently looking at Moncton and Saint John - I am retired but my husband still works so he'll be looking for full-time employment. You mentioned that you were thinking of doing another video on property taxes and utilities, that would be great as it's not easy to find that info. Also, weren't you worried about not having a family doctor for the foreseeable future? And, how did you find your realtor? Any other information about a move would be great. Truly enjoying your videos, keep them coming :)

First, thank you for watching our videos, and subscribing to our channel. Your comment was great to read and full of excellent questions that deserve a thorough response. Moncton and Saint John are very different places. Saint John is more industrial, which puts some people off, but also has way more natural and architectural beauty, and is surrounded by water. Moncton is a little more diverse, a little more white collar and is well located as a central maritime point and relatively close to eastern beaches along the Northumberland Strait. If you watch any more of our videos you may notice that we are not all that fond of Moncton. It's a great city, but to us, its just like any other city, strip malls and chain restaurants. Saint John is different and special. I think but not certain, that Moncton historically does have a slightly lower unemployment rate, and their house prices are a little higher. Property taxes are pretty simple but require some thought. New Brunswick has among the highest property taxes in Canada, and Saint John has the highest taxes in New Brunswick. Our home in Saint John cost us half what we sold our condo for in BC, but our property taxes are more than double. What matters is equivalency. Our half the price home in Saint John is more than double the size of our condo in BC and to buy the same thing in BC as in Saint John would cost a minimum of three times the price we paid. So the taxes per dollar of assessed value are much higher here, but the taxes per equivalent home are actually pretty similar. You will pay approximately 1.8% of assessed value of your home in property taxes each year. I think its more like 1.5% in Moncton. The mistake people make is thinking they will by a much bigger house here than what they are selling elsewhere and then are shocked at the taxes they have to pay. Make no mistake, if you buy a half million dollar home here you are considered rich and should be able to afford the taxes. If you buy something comparable as a home to what you are selling, which will be much cheaper here, the taxes should not be much of an issue. Utilities are pretty much in line with most of Canada from what I hear, but more expensive than BC. Keep in mind that a high percentage of homes here are heated with oil, which can fluctuate greatly in price and you have to keep your tank full. Heat pumps are also popular here because they save on heating costs. Many homes here are older and not well insulated. We chose to sell our first cute old home with oil heat and poor insulation to buy a fairly new townhome with great insulation and electric heat. There is not much, if any, natural gas here. I find the doctor thing and the recent news article about it to be ridiculous. Yes, its hard to get a family doctor, just like it is everywhere in Canada. There is a registry and they prioritize people with underlying conditions. We have no conditions and were offered a doctor after two years. After my doctor in BC retired, it took me eight years to find a new one. No doctor does not mean no health care. Walk-in clinics work great here and you can even make appointments for them. We have had zero issues getting high quality health care in Saint John and we have had lots of experience with it for ourselves and for my brother who visited us from BC, and was admitted to hospital immediately when he needed help. Saint John is a small city, yet has two full service hospitals. For the record, the guy whining in the news article was mad that he got his disability insurance cut off because it was a requirement to have a family doctor, so it was his own fault. I found our realtor by doing an incredible amount of research, and she is the best realtor I have ever dealt with anywhere, by a long margin. We have bought, sold and bought again with her. She is an amazing resource for this area, especially for out of province buyers. If you would like to be put in touch with her, send me an email to lesduggan@gmail.com. I do not make her info public as I do not want her inundated with calls from lookie loos. Hope some of this helps. We would love to meet you and share online relationship stories if you decide to move to Saint John, and feel free to ask any more questions you may have.

@@WeLoveSaintJohn Thank you so very much for taking the time to respond. This is such good feedback and you've reassured us regarding the health care system in NB. As it's getting late here, I will send you an email in the morning. Great "talking" to you and we would love to also meet you guys. And I didn't mention in my original post but we also have a dog :)

I assume there is some degree of racism in any city, and being white I don't want to make any assumptions about Saint John, because my experience may be different than yours. However, I will say that the smaller towns in NB would not be your best bet. Saint John and Moncton are quite liberal and very welcoming, and while not as diverse as Vancouver I would like to think that you won't have any issues.
