Until then, according to what we now know about the human brain, they will have impaired judgement and critical thinking. A part of me thinks "Man 15? that's so young for life behind bars", but then I consider that the guy they killed was only 32. His parents are more than likely still alive at this point, and now they have to bury their own child due to horrific and unnecessary act of violence. These kids will probably not serve life in prison (especially if they take a plea deal), and their parents will still be able to visit them in prison. Their lives may be figuratively 'over', but White's life is LITERALLY over. He's gone, forever. His parents will never ever be able to see him again, if he has wife, she'll never be able see him again, and if he has a kid, that kid just lost their father for no reason. So i'm sure some news organization will cry over how these kids lives are 'ruined forever' over just a 'simple mistake'. However, they can bounce back from this, maybe not for a few decades, but they might not get life. So somewhere down the line, they just might be a couple of free old, wrinkly ex-cons. White, however, can't bounce back, he can't do anything. So, fuck those kids, hope they rot.

What so many people don’t seem to grasp about the Michigan Five is that 17 year olds are not that stupid. I think if age plays into it at all, it’s more about believing that you can get away with anything and also a certain amount of nihilism that many people in my generation seem to hold. It is not about a lack of thinking or just not knowing any better. Nobody seriously thinks that dropping a 20 lb rock into oncoming traffic can’t break a window and at least cause an accident if not a fatality.

Yeah there's a difference between acting stupid and making mistakes and THROWING GIANT ROCKS DOWN AT CARS.
@SherrifOfNottingham7 жыл бұрын
The difference between a 7 year old dropping things onto oncoming cars is that they might not mean harm, they're thinking about how cool it would be to see something splatter or get hit by a vehicle. At a young age it's easy to see cars as being indestructible and that what's going to happen is similar to how it would react in a video game. This is not true for a 14+ year old. Even a 7 year old wouldn't do what these idiots did. Basically at their age they are either malicious, or mentally disabled. Either way they need to be locked up for the rest of their lives, just a matter of what kind of prison you're going to put them into. People don't change, at 15 they're throwing rocks at oncoming cars, the only reason they wouldn't do that as adults is they might be smarter and realize that they wouldn't get away with it. They don't feel bad that they killed somebody, they just feel bad for what that means will happen to them. If they grow up and are allowed to be on the streets they'll keep doing shit like this...
@subblonde31017 жыл бұрын
I remember me and my friend threw snowballs at cars once, and after a couple we stopped. And looking back I can't believe I would even do that, so dangerous and dumb. We ended hitting an under cover cop (so he said, who knows) but we hid in a bush and he didn't catch us, he just yelled that he was a cop. Also once a few of us egged some cars once, also something a regret, but one car went and got a carton of eggs, chased us...and egged us back. Pretty funny and clever, gotta give em that. We totally deserved it. But yeah this is extreme and they knew they were causing serious harm to people and they knew exactly what they were doing...I mean they didn't give a shit if they killed someone, which they did. Life in prison, they don't deserve anything less.

Youths throwing rocks of bridges has become a pretty big problem in my country, Denmark, since 2016. Going from 61 incidents in 2015 to 230 incidents in 2016, with children as young as 9 doing it. It should be noted that as far as I'm aware, there's "only" been one fatality so far. Horrifyingly enough according to 'Politiets Nationale Efterforskningscenter' (NEC) the danish police intelligence, the increase stems, at least partially, from that one fatality. In august of 2016, a german family's car was hit by a 30kg rock. The mother died and the father was severly disabled for the rest of his life, leaving their 5-year old alive and alone. In the following months the NEC reported a significant increase in the number of incidents. Honestly, it makes me sick to my stomach. The disconnect these people must feel between their actions and the consequences. It is attempted murder and I don't think the young people realize that. Not really. In the end it doesn't matter whether they thought somebody could die or not, what matters are their actions and they should be held responsible for them. Perhaps if somebody actually goes to jail for a significant amount of time for this, the consequences will seem more real and there will be fewer incidents.
@andyv_one7 жыл бұрын
MissMarshmallow I agree with what you are saying, however it was not intended murder. They were throwing rocks of the bridge with the intent to harm. Big difference. Unfortunately they did end up killing somebody. However this is due to the lack of maturity they have because they are stil children. 2nd degree murder is to harsh of a punishment. Although they did kill somebody, taking the lives of 5 children is not reasonable or right.

Age is no factor. If you commit a crime you should be punished to the fullest extent of an adult. Just to use an example of why; In my home country there was an extremely infamous case of two young boys (under 12 years old) kidnapping, torturing and eventually murdering a toddler by beating him unconscious with a rock and throwing him onto a railway line where he was eventually decapitated by a train. Due to their age the two boys were given suspended life sentences and were released when they reached 18, one of the two boys actually lived for some time in the same area as the murdered child's mother and bragged to people in bars and pubs about the sick act he committed while barely a pre-teen. It's stories like this that tell us why age should not be taken into account in any criminal case. Nobody is born evil, but if you become evil at any age you must expect society to treat you as the monster you are regardless of how much time you have spent on Earth.

I love you and your take on the news, thank you for what you and your team does. The stone thing happened to my dad. Some high school kids were under an overpass that goes over train tracks, throwing the rocks up at the cars. Apparently they were on the basketball team and were "practicing". A rock shattered my dad's windshield, cutting him severely. The rock landed on the passenger side of his truck also but no one was with him, thank God. He went off road, down to the tracks to find the kids. He was an off duty sheriff's deputy at the time. They were booked into jail and my dad got stiches. The speed limit was 45mph but I remember being so scared seeing him after. These kids were old enough to know better and so are the Michigan Five. What did they think would happen?! I think the Amazon Key would be good if used on a locker/mailbox so your packages could be stored securely until you retrieved them, but access to your entire home is ridiculous.

Dylan Perez-Rubio I was thinking the same... Opening the garage would be to much already but a small empty room or a shed would be more like it.

Yeah. They could, say increase the yearly subscription by a bit and all those prime members will receive a locker to put on your porch or mailbox. They could be designed differently to fit different home styles and if you want you can request a special size for a litte extra cash.
@Tiggaknock7 жыл бұрын
Actually, thats a great idea! They should sell Amazon security boxes that you bolt to your porch or stoop area. It unlocks when you get a package and alerts you. There is absolutely no reason to let someone in your $300k home for a $50 package. If it's that serious, toss that b*tch on the roof, I'll get it later.
@samgiglio43917 жыл бұрын
While this idea makes sense, I have the feeling Amazon knows that enough people will want to trade security for convenience that they'll sell enough units, and they will be building trust with a consumer base to the point of entering the smart home market in the future. That being said, I would never do anything more than a lock box and your idea is safer. I also don't order from Amazon nearly as much as some people do.

Here in Denmark we have had quite a lot of cases where rocks, apples and other things have been thrown from overpassings onto the highway. In one case they used a concrete block so heavy that when it hit a german family, the mother got killed and the dad went into a coma. They have never found who did this but in other cases with apples it has been kids/teenagers throwing the things onto oncoming trafic. I don't care how old the ones who did this is. They need to be punished even if somebody didn't end up dead. This is seriously dangerous behavior!

I actually met President Bush (Sr.) that same year in Houston, as he came to my restaurant before an Amy Grant Christmas concert. Our management team was briefed days before by Secret Service on their needs (all entries, Windows, bathroom locations, name of the waiter days in advance, etc). Amidst that, it was "politically correctly" explained that H.W. was not all there mentally anymore, and that if there were any issues with discomfort or confusion with him, to let his aide know. He told a couple of colorful jokes with his group, and tended to hold the arm of whoever he was talking to (my staff, his friends, me). Her story of him grabbing her and telling dirty jokes is very believable to me because of this, but I think his awareness and intention are doubtful. The man was 90/91 years old and has impeding senility. He completely forgot what he ordered to the point that when his food came out, he asked the waiter "excuse me, what the fuck is this?" To which his wife and the server reminded him it was what he ordered. Barbara Bush handled it like this happens all the time. As painful as it was to see a former president slipping away mentally, I'll always be proud that I got to hear a president drop an F bomb.

I feel like the Michigan 5 should get some kind of severe punishment. I don't care how hold they are, they deserve it. It's basic fact that you don't throw a 20 pound rock at a car, let alone one going at 60mph. What makes this entire situation worse for me is not only are two of them the same age as my younger brother but the oldest is the same age as me. I mean he's right on the edge of being a legal adult, and probably had college or something like that planned for the future. Now those plans have been thrown out the window, because they all chose to have 10 minutes of fun without thinking and now are going to pay with loosing living a major part of their lives.

The amazon thing is a good idea in concept but awful in practice, it would probably be better if amazon sold a small outhouse or metallic box that had this feature so that the amazon employee can open this box and place the package there for safekeeping than your house. We have a group of teens on bikes attacking people by throwing rocks, pretzels, and random stuff to get their attention. When the person stops because they're hit, they surround them, mace them and brutally beat them. They attacked several people including a friend of ours who could've died if a business owner didn't come outside with a gun making them scramble. The best part is, the news didn't cover his attack...the most brutal one, so no one nationally realize this is happening. It's going to take someone being killed before they're stopped I guess 😡

The Michigan five are an example of what can happen when you allow young people to congregate together without supervision. Every kid gets stupid ideas of what might be entertaining but on their own dismiss it and move on. But in a group, one kid gets an idea and instead of dismissing it there's 4 other young and dumb kids to escalate it. I have two boys and it's my intention to educate them on what can happen when you're spending time in large groups and how quickly things can go south.
@organicstorm7 жыл бұрын
Sandra Jackson teenagers don't need constant supervision to not become criminals.. organicstorm I get what you're saying. I was going with more a mob mentality type thing. People, grown adults can be influenced to do things they wouldn't normally do when in a group setting. Put younger kids into the mix, and bad things can happen. Not always, but the chances are there. No excuse for what they did. None at all, and they need to be held accountable.

I'm glad that women and men are coming forward to speak about their experiences with sexual assault in their job. At a car factory I worked at one summer, they were super strict about preventing the older men from hitting on the young female college students who filled in for workers on vacation. Apparently it was a huge problem before and once they started firing men for sexual harassment, they were all on their best behaviour and kept a respectable distance. I remember a man made a joke about offering a ride on his fork lift, because there's a lot of walking at that place. I was really shy at the time, so he thought I was offended and profusely apologised. As I said, they were all on their best behaviour.

At my house we just have a regular door off the steps, and if someone opens that without precaution, my cat is gone. And it's scary to come home and your cat runs past you inside when you didn't even know they were outside in the first place.

Andrew Haines While I see your point I must argue that this is not the case for most amazon deliveries. If your constantly recieving large boxes, and absolutely can't schedule to be home for delivery, then yes this service may be useful for you. But arguably for the more common smaller box, that may have a $50 and below price tag, the risk is not worth risking access to your full house and belonging. Hence why the lockbox idea may be one more people would be interested/comfortable with instead of Amazon Key. But hey just my thoughts.

Its still not safer. Anyone can break open a container plus having an Amazon box right outside your door sure is inviting for the common burglar. A person's life should not be taken lightly, especially one taken from them by the stupidity of these 5 children.

I don't know how well "making an example of them" works with teens. I've never heard of a teenager being spooked from doing something stupid from reading the news.

These kids are sick. They thought that being harmful, edgy juveniles would be fun. Just five less rucksacks in society. Bad parenting. At least they won't breed soon.

Also, it’s not fair to punish them more than you would have otherwise just to “make an example out of them”

Seems like a lot of people here live in decent neighborhoods. If you do, Amazon Key is probably not for you. But in other neighborhoods, there are packages stolen off of doorsteps every day. Its the easiest and most escapable form of theft. There are thieves who literally follow UPS trucks and pick up the largest and most vulnerable packages (no guard dog, no one home, no security cameras) they drop off. So although the product isn't for me, I have had my packages stolen right off my doorstep. Its not a dumb product. I'll trust the delivery guy just doing their job more than the integrity of any random Joe that might be walking by

FatAlbert1020 I live in a nice neighborhood, everyone always watches out for suspicious people who don't belong here. Never once had a package stole. I agree, it's not for everyone.

I don’t think the teens necessarily set out to kill someone, but obviously they were throwing rocks from the overpass to see if they would hit a car. And it’s very unfortunate that an innocent man died because of their dumb decisions. I do think they should be punished to the full extent of the law.

Here's the one thing I have to say about the Bush thing: he's in a wheelchair, she stands next to him. Wheelchairs are not tall. If you wish to pose with your arm around someone in a wheelchair, you should probably crouch down or just understand that wheelchair-bound people usually cannot reach their arm high enough to go around your waist.

Who the hell are these people defending child molesters? I've always felt your opinions on what should be done to them was a lot kinder than my own. Also if child molesters defenders unsubbed I'd say that is a good thing.

Who the hell are these people defending human rights and the basic principles of society is what you should ask. ;-)

SebastianMisch Wasn't aware pedophiles were human and deserved those rights.
@icewallowcome30237 жыл бұрын
@Nero Viper @Zainab Criminals are still humans, regardless of their crime(s). All humans enjoy human rights meaning they must not be tortured. It's really that simple. You cannot disagree and take the moral high ground.
@shang31907 жыл бұрын
For the ones who say child sex offenders are still human and deserve those human rights, explain that to the children at the end of the abuse. Only a personal opinion, but I feel the last thought in my mind would be protecting the human rights of a child molester who deemed their sexual needs as so important they were willing to destroy the lives of these children and cause them that kind of mental and physical harm.
@icewallowcome30237 жыл бұрын
@Zainab @hayley thomas Dehumanizing criminals so that you can justify their torture and killing doesn't help anybody. Justice systems in modern civilized societies do not punish out of revenge. We punish for two reasons: 1) Show criminals that their actions have consequences and thereby giving them the opportunity to reintegrate into society. 2) Deterr other people from committing the crime. It's clear that DeFranco either doesn't know or doesn't care about the philosophy of justice and human rights, but in my opinion we should all know at least the basics. There is of course far more detail to this discussion, especially when it comes to pedophilia. Although I don't think we'll make much ground when one side is denying humans their humanity and wants to torture them.

Whew. I used to SPIT off overpasses onto passing cars when i was 10, even back then i had the sense not to throw a very large solid object in the direction of cars or a road. The fact that these boys are all in the late stages of their teenage years makes this disgusting, they definitely knew what they were doing and the damage it would/could cause, the level of stupidity is insane. a life sentence seems harsh for such young lads but they did what they did with damage and destruction in mind, in my opinion 10-20 years in prison should teach them a thing or 2 about what's ok and what's not.

As a dude with two kids, both much younger (4 and 1), corrective punishments needs to take intent into account. Huge punishments don't change behavior when there there is no model of proper behavior to substitute the bad behavior. These terrible acts were done by children with undeveloped brains and there is a chance to adjust this obviously abhorrent behavior. If throwing them in jail, just like with everyone else thrown in jail, is intended to create an adult that will function correctly in society, it will fail to miss the mark. These kids will become much worse off by their extreme punishment if adults don't see this through the lens of kids that could be theirs that still, obviously, need to be raised into adults.

In regards to Amazon key, I am a meter reader with a local utility, we already have the "key" program in place. Customers gave us their house keys and I have been attacked by pets, pets have gotten loose, home owners have come back home while I was in the house and I was held at gunpoint until the police arrived, police have been called on me so many times I know a few of them by name, I have walked in on people having sex, doing dope or other illegal activities. Others in my office have been infected by fleas and bedbugs, accused of theft, accused of rape. Some of us have been dragged into court and corporate loves to say we have the right to refuse entering a house if we feel uncomfortable yet threatens to fire us if we don't read their meters and were given a key. I hope Amazon Key is implemented and maybe after the 10th lawsuit it might convince other companies to drop this plan and stop putting us in danger.

How can the kids age be a factor? No, they deserve the full extent of the law. I understand if your son Trey doesn't understand the possible outcome of throwing a rock at something, but by the time you get past age 5 there is just no excuse. These guys were 16 the youngest! If they are old enough to be out and about on their own it's because they have a general understanding of the world and consequences. Also that rocks are not to be thrown at cars.
@zombieslayer66567 жыл бұрын
I agree. If you are over 8 years old there is no excuse to do that. You should know by the age of 15-17 to not do that.
@Daaaanielle7 жыл бұрын
Well, yeah, but by age five I had been told enough times that I should't throw my sky dancers at people because they'd get hurt! By age 15 I'd made the connection that if I throw something heavier people might get hurt. And I'd gotten in enough trouble to know that my actions have consequences. I feel like at least one of these kids is a ring leader. And a really charismatic sociopath that influenced the others a whole lot. But, I mean, you gotta do the time right? I hope they do, even if only to be an example. Poor family, 6 families are going through hell right now.

To Mr Defranco ------ you are 100% correct about the amazon key but think about this ( out side your front door is a box bolted to the ground (or small shed with door) the amazon key system would unlock the shed door or the box, out side the house.
