Interactions like this one are entirely the octopus's choice. It could easily flee and hide in another portion of the exhibit if it chose not to interact. If it were an aggressive interaction and the octopus was in “fight” mode, it would be capable of far more strength than it shows in this video and could inflict a painful bite.

@telaferrum9 жыл бұрын
I think not, actually, and not for the obvious reason that an octopus isn't gonna learn to play the drums like a person. Two thirds of an octopuses neurons are in their arms, and an octopus only gives high level commands to the arms. The arms kind of figure out the details of what to do on their own, and can perform very complex motions. But this also means they're not able to control fine detailed motions as well as humans, which could make it hard to keep a beat. They also lack proprioception, meaning they can't actually tell where their arms are without looking at them, though they are able to sense whether an arm is stretched out or not. They can tell the taste and texture of something using the arms, but not its shape without looking. That's all just to say I think it's interesting how their arms work that way. Of course thinking seriously about an octopus playing drums you could say all sorts of silly stuff like sound not traveling as well under water.

I live in Monterey and used to go to the aquarium , but not anymore . The handler clearly loves his job , which is obvious . Unfortunately , for such an intelligent animal , it has always been kept in a very small tank , which bothers alot of locals . They had turtles also in very tanks . If I was an octopus confined by myself , in a small tank , I'd certainly try to interact with anyone or anything that came by to break-up the isolation of not being able to swim around in my small tank. There hasn't been any change in tank size , for over 30 + years. They could put it in a larger tank with mentally stimulating games to play to get it's food . Instead , it sits beside a rock wall all day , with tourist wondering if it's real or not.

I volunteered at this aquarium and sadly the tank that held this octopus is terribly small for such an intelligent animal to be held in. It rarely moves around and has nothing to do UNLESS it gets fed. Visitors comment on it's confined space and it's had that small tank since the aquarium was built over 25 years ago .They built a massive tank for open ocean fish...But the poor octopus is stuck in an outdated cramped tank. Sea turtles and other creatures had same problem. Not happy going there anymore and don't recommend it.

Seen many forms of life underwater. I've been on 200+ dives and I will say right now that the octopus is the most amazing thing I've seen. Seen whales, sharks, barracuda, cuddle fish, hundreds of types of exotic fish, dozens of type of coral(during the day and at night) and I must say, the color changing octopi I have seen enchanted me, I couldn't look away. You get a definite impression of sentience when you're around one as well.

9 brains. A central brain and 8 independent brains in each arm working independently. Very intelligent. We may think we’re the most intelligent species on earth, but other species may have different intelligence that we can’t comprehend. They have been in the oceans long before us. Life forms in other parts of the universe may have even greater abilities of intelligence than humans that developed under different chemical circumstances.

The Monterey Bay Aquarium should have security or something that patrols around, I remember last time I went, in I believe 2013 or 2014, that octopus was pretty much just hiding in the corner, while wave after wave of people came by to take flash photos of the poor thing, despite "NO FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY" being posted on the glass. I felt so bad for it.
@miriamrobarts5 ай бұрын
This is also stupid, because if you're taking a photo through glass, the flash will just create a glare with the light reflecting off the glass. The best way to photograph through glass is to either use a polarizing filter to reduce reflections, or put the camera right against the glass.

I don’t consider them “less advanced” than vertebrates. Any animal that has basically eight additional “mini brains” in its tentacles, solve problems, can maneuver into a space slightly larger than its beak, instantly change colors, the shape/texture of its skin (with at least two species eliciting bioluminescence) AND survive as a species for 300 million years, through three mass extinctions, is definitely a boss. 🦑🦑🦑☄️🌊

Years ago I was Salmon fishing off the Coast of BC. I stopped to clean my fish and dropped a line to the bottom with a large Herring. About 10 minutes in I looked at the rod and it was so bent over I thought it would break. I thought I had a Halibut, but when I pulled it up it was a 6 foot GPO. Every person should experience what it's like to handle a GPO. Some are huge, like mine, but you want to talk about a slimy icky feeling when the head can compress into near nothingness. It was a great experience!
@carldeithorn34505 жыл бұрын
When it's getting up close and personal, like that, is there a risk that it will bite? Does it know the difference between friend and food? Does it care or can it even help itself? Do they like finger food?
@grisflyt5 жыл бұрын
It's probably little risk. Octopuses are quite intelligent and can tell food from not food. It is a wild animal and such does have strong instincts. But, again, if it doesn't feel threatened there should be little risk. A general rule is to not handle large wild animals on your own.

Octopi are largely solitary and territorial, they're one of a number of animals that are perfectly fine to raise in a large aquarium. Aquariums in general are pretty benign, unless they're like SeaWorld, trying to do orca and dolphin exhibits. Always remember, your social needs are not the same as the social needs of a lobster or anemone. Don't anthropomorphize. Many simple creatures are at their happiest in a sheltered grotto with a consistent food supply and no predators.
