Unless you're racing at world tour level or have a lot of money to spend, it's not really worth worrying about. A better way to gain speed would be to lose weight on your person. You're right, for most riders in most situations, there is no difference in power output if you use clip-in pedals. There are still other advantages though, which I list on my website: www.cyclingabout.com/clipless-pedals-advantages-disadvantages/
@KompletterGeist Жыл бұрын
yes but clipping in makes climbing significantly less tiring because the pedaling motion is so much more circular. Without clips, all the power basically comes from the quads and glutes. With clips, you can involve your hamstrings and calfes as well

You missed one point, where bike weight actually matters: Rough terrain. When you really need to push and pull on the bars, brake and accelerate very often or shift weight from the front to the rear and back, a heavier setup gets you exhausted much, much faster.

Yes good point , , all these small differences do make a big difference after one day . Did a bike pack recently over constantly undulating terrain sometimes only a metre or two then upto 5o and 100m difference in height over grooved dry mud and the constant changing in gearing to adapt was noticeable as for brief moments I was often in the wrong gear taking the weight strain when pedalling . It makes a hell of a difference starting a 10kg from a standstill as compared to a 14kg bike, especially when this happens dozens of times in a journey, not to count the hundreds of slow downs and speed ups most journeys involve.

definitely changed my whole view of bike weigtht vs aerodynamics and roll resistance and durability, wasnt a complete weight freak, but I also tried to keep it reasonably low for an ok price to be fair, I was already looking many hours for a very good rolling mtb tyre with a bit of width, so i have a bot of comfort and ended up buying some schwalbe big apples with 50mm width they have a bit more rolling resistance than the scwalbe almotion, but are significantly less expensive and also share a very good anti flat with a little bit of sidewall protection, over all a very good tyre, not a fan of the wire bead, though, i had seen in tests, that wire beads add rolling resisntance and that thin sidewalls make it less, in general sadly, there is not much out there, where you can methodically compare rolling resistances other than the website, that you were using (I used the same website) my next bike might be a steel or alu hard tail frame, because of durability and cost, then nice sturdy MTB wheels with discs shimano hydraulics with mineral oil I hate the corrosive DOT stuff, makes me sick, how that stuff is destroying all the good gear on cars, motorbikes and bicycles, but in most countries still required for road vehicle use because of hydrocopic porperties instead of hydrophobic porperties of the mineral oil (hydrphobic oils can lead to water bubbles inside the oil circuit and lead to heat driven brake blocking and lead to accidents) love, how you have the right attitude towards research for stuff and keep an open mind, fact is, that most topics are much complicated to convey the full impact in a short time, so people tend to dumb in down and simplify, but leads to assumptions and misconceptions, which sadly stick around way to long

I wanted to use a semi slick with big side knobs to corner, just a dedicated MTB tire to be honest. Weight is still 1kg, that is light for an 29x2,4" MTB Enduro tire. With almost no thread at the center you would slide even in dry conditions because there is to much dust on top of the trails. In wet conditions , well you can guess it ;). @drewwoodward68183 жыл бұрын
I would say that yes when touring your probably going to be carry a bunch of extra weight anyway so an extra kg isn't going to make a huge difference for most of the ride but there are definitly aspects where I would say the lighter the better. For one lighter equipment usually packs smaller so it's easier to pack on the bike, but also if like me your not that fit and riding up to the top of the hill just isn't viable so you inevitably have to get off and push (had a lot of these situations on my last ride in scotland), and I can say pushing a lightweight lightly packed bike up a hill is a lot nicer than pushing a heavy bike that heavily loaded up that same hill. And numerous times a long a route you come to sections where you need to carry the bike, certain cattle gates open with the lower section still in place for example, or logs or trees to get past, lighter weight is the difference between being able to carry it all across in 1 trip, or having to unload the bike and make multiple trips back and forth to take the bike over then your bags etc

I ride a 2015 Specialized Pitch mostly on the road with knobby tyres (for now) and it's a blast. You can ride basically anywhere and not sweat the small stuff. Look at the glass half full at the end of the day. A ride on a hardtail XC style bike with the rough terrain tyres Burns more calories on average for the same distance compared to a road bike, according to Strava anyway lol! Ride the bike you like at the end of the day. There's something satisfying about the comfort of a mtb, especially when you learn to manipulate the gears enough to maintain a nice cruising speed, and make the same distance as some of the roadies. 😍🤩

I couldn't agree more. Bike weight reduction can be extremely expensive for very little, if any, gain. Much easier to lose a few kgs off yourself. Having said that, there's no doubt that a lightweight bike feels great but you're fooling yourself if you reckon it's making cycling faster / easier. Same can be said for the nonsense about one bike being more aerodynamic than another. No bike presents itself as a large object to push through the air when compared to the parachute sitting on it.

Aluminum both can be durable and be repaired but Carbon sure it is durable but can it be repaired yeah but a single crack will make your day worst.

And guess where majority of the grams are in a weekend warrior? THEIR BIG GUT

b-b-but... the lighter the bike the more pro the serious bois think you are.... qq :P thank you for your research and hard work~! Feeling pretty good about my 24lb-ish Gravel Bike now lol.

Yep the carrying and flying parts are my biggest concerns! What are the most cost effective ways to reduce bike weight?

What about fatigue? Doesn't additional weight wear out your body faster, especially when doing multiple-day tours? Just wondering. Great video!

What about air, wind resistance regarding the frontal mass of the actual cyclist? For instance a cyclist who rides in a more arodynamic position ? Or a cyclist who rides in the drops as opposed to riding in the hoods for a length of time? Or a more arodynamic bike? How are these more aerodynamic factors possibly more efficient? In addition what is the impact, effect on physical excertion regarding the aerodynamics of the cyclist during many hours on the bike including the possible trade off of the areodynamic position versus comfort?

I agree that weight isn’t as important as some say, but I don’t think your testing is very accurate because it is much harder to accelerate. In an actual real world scenario you’ll brake a lot and have to accelerate a lot where you lose a lot of energy. It is true that on a perfectly flat road you aren’t much slower.

I actually like the heavier bike, more like I just want to train my hamstrings and quads saves me time squatting in the Gym and I don't race so I don't need a lighter bike and a heavier bike is much more stable to ride

I've just seen this video after spending a lot of money on gear for my next trip. I'll justify my purchases by saying I was saving space not weight.

Should rider weight be in the pie chart? 200lbs rider on a 30lbs bike is not the same as 30lbs rider on 200lbs bike. Hyperbolic example for effect only. You get my point.

In the context of velocity as a function of weight, it would be erroneous not to include rider weight.
@bernibeckmann97533 жыл бұрын
@@cjohnson3836 Ok but since he's going uphill as much as he's going downhill, a light rider on a heavy bike is going to show different outcomes than a heavy rider on on a light bike even if total weights are the same. I got this perspective from another bike video, I don't have the wattage to figure this out on my own.

@@bernibeckmann9753 that makes zero sense. Physics is physics. F=mg

@@cjohnson3836 Right, laws of physics. I think I got ahead of myself because I've heard people say why lose a pound of bike weight at great expense when you could easily lose a pound of body fat? That's why I questioned the need to include the weight of the rider in the pie chart because laws of physics apply no matter the rider weight.

my bike (8.2kg) could be 1 kg lighter...but I should lose 10kg myself first 😂
