According to other channels on the Left, you have to be a farmer who owns more than 100 football pitches worth of land before you need to pay inheritance tax, which is supposed to be a tiny number of land owners who rent to farmers, not actual farmers.

The UK has not been self sufficient in food for hundreds of years. Even during the war when every possible square yard was turned to agriculture and there was rationing. Large amounts of food had to be imported. Sailors lost their lives getting food convoys to the UK. Brexit caused big food price inflation because it increased the prices of food from our main source of food imports, the EU.

@jimshelley8831 Totally agree - the Earth should be a commonly held treasure, where ownership can never be concentrated in so few hands. But the enemy of your enemy isn't always your friend. Passing this law will displace a currently disorganised landed class - who display variable (but freely exercised) levels of good and ill intentioned charity and perfidy - only to gift the majority of UK land to a totalitarian and vampiric machinery of such soulless evil that Dante's visions of Inferno will be preferable to the Earth they will create under their ownership and control. Helping the public good wasn't on the minds of the global oligarchic and asset management interests who clearly bought and paid for this bill. They own the bulk of the popular discourse expressed by the centre and right, and have definitely helped to fund and buy up certain prominent left wing media channels. Silly not to when money is no object.

Nah. Suddenly when Rich farmers have their tax break taken away then it's a problem. I don't agree much with Labour but they got this right. Plus Farmers voted for Brexit, they would've got at least some protection from the EU. The real farmer's, not the owners are the one's that need help. With better support and controls from predatory practices of the supermarket chains. Protest the rampant capitalism. This protest has coverage for all the wrong reasons. Why should I care when rich people have to follow the same rules as the rules as the rest of us. Answer, I don't.

Basically, farmers are all good up to £3million, which increases to £5million when you include other tax breaks around farm buildings. Then it’s only 20% after that. This targets the rich who’ve bought farms to avoid tax…this channel is boosting a right-wing talking point just to get at Labour…I f**king hate Starmer and his second rate Tory impression of a party but they got this half-right. Farmers should be paid more fairly for the food they produce and protected from price gouging supermarkets. Labour should be doing that as well as closing this loophole.

The farmers protest is an astro turf movement, organised by and designed to serve the interests of rich landowners. Just because this tax measure was taken by Starmer's government doesn't make it a bad thing: even a stopped clock is right twice a day. The lack of inheritance tax on farms has made farmland into a tax avoidance scheme for the likes of Clarkson (as he has admitted) and James Dyson, simultaneously pushing up the price of farmland for small farmers. As usual the farmers political instincts are to act against their own interests. There are plenty of things farmers should be protesting about: like the breaking of promises, made by Farage and co, that the levels of subsidy would remain the same after Brexit; the planned ending of payments for conservation measures, like wildflowers in field margins; the failure to address the massive increase in bureaucracy since leaving the single market and the appalling treatment they receive from the supermarket cartels for starters.

Got this completely wrong Flintoff. IHT is a wealth tax which all individuals in the UK should be subject to as part of a re-distribution system. Farmers paid it until the 1980s. THEN Thatcher made them exempt. Why? Political gerrymandering of course. So why are they allowed to pass on their wealth down the family, when others are not? Are farms businesses? If so they should be subject to corporate taxation. If they are owned (as most small farms are) by individual farmers then this is INDIVIDUAL WEALTH. Farmers have taken us for a ride for too long. 'No farms, No food' they say. Well 'No builders, No houses'. 'No textile workers, No clothes.' etc. etc. Farmers slogan shows how entitled they are. YOU COULD NOT BE MORE WRONG CRISPIN. The most Tory people in the UK have just shafted YOU!
