It is only myself in the household but I still prep. I keep close to a year's worth of some items on hand. Example Canned Beets from the store. One can equals two servings for me, so I purchase 8-12 cans when I find them at a reasonable price. This gives me enough for 2-4 meals / month. They last a long time, are nutritious, and because I like them they get eaten up. My prepping pantry is in the front hall of my apartment. I use an assortment of furniture including an, armoire, a baker's rack, a few bookcases to hold my items. It is close to my kitchen, and makes it easy to see what I have on hand .

Just a suggestion when storing your empty canning jars to store them with a new lid and a ring on them that way you do not get any spiders and bugs in the jars. That way you are not looking for the rings next time you are going to can. I do this, I have a lot of those Asian beetles and this prevents them from being in the jars which did happen before I started storing the empty canning jars with new lids and used rings.

This also keeps the jars from chips occurring on the rims.

I also store my ready to go jars upside down since I use my canning jars for every day storage and don’t need new lids on them.

I fill my empty jars with water the use a ring and seal. This keeps my jars clean from debris and bugs, and also gives us a water supply should we need it.

We have been buying from Azure and local farms almost exclusively for several years. We keep a year or more stock of everything as well. And it's just three adults here but it is still important to me to do this. We do have to buy some food/supplies from local grocery stores but very little. I will happily support Azure Standard, our local meat farmer, and produce farmers before supporting Wal Mart! I will add that you are the first person I have ever heard say they didn't like Redmond's Real Salt. I buy it in bulk, plus their seasoned salt and speciality salts. Only salt in my house besides canning/pickling salt and flaky salt.
@TheFromScratchFarmhouse
@TheFromScratchFarmhouse 23 сағат бұрын
I love that you do this! Long story short with the Redmond’s… I found that the mineral content made my canned items not turn out as well. Mushy pickles, etc. Also their salt has traces of lead which I’m not comfortable with.

I don’t like Redmond’s at all. I really wanted to but I can’t get past feeling like I put sand and gravel in my food. I do celtic sea salt instead. I really tried, I bought several of Redmond’s options because I do believe in buying close to home and keeping foods as pure as possible.

We're starting to do this on a smaller scale since we have only 3 of us. I have a full rack of home canned goods from our garden, friends gardens and buying organic fresh locally (like cranberries)and instead of buying from azure standard i buy in bulk from Amish and Mennonite grocery stores when we go to PA.

I could never afford purchasing grocery from Azure Standard with a $60 weekly budget, that's why I grow my own food and shop at Aldi for the things I can't grow. Fortunately I am vegetarian/vegan, but I do enjoy seeing how you prepped for a year.

I think what you’re doing is very wise. I have shopped monthly for a good many years but just recently am stretching to every other month. So far not an issue but I also keep a very well stocked pantry, which like you, I could probably go a year if needed. So my shopping is more of a staple restock than grocery shopping. If that makes sense. I shop primarily azure as well. I’d much rather support them than Walmart. I’m just not a big corporate fan. So I’m left with milk and meat. I can buy raw milk from our local Mennonites so I do that. Meat is a little more of a struggle but again I keep a good amount canned, freeze dried or in the freezer. Great video topic. Thanks for sharing.

Why would you need to remove the skin if you’re going to blend and strain them. Is it a flavor or lectin issue? Just curious.

It's SHOCKING to me that people are upset that you're not "supporting your local supermarket". Good grief. A chain like Walmart isn't going to die off because you or I don't support them, and I agree--many are not worth supporting. I won't even set foot in Sprouts anymore since their awful treatment of folks during "Cøvïd"! They don't miss me--and they aren't in danger of closing anytime soon, despite the $200 I used to drop there each week! I applaud you so much for being as self-sufficient as possible and aim to learn more! Good for you! 👏🏼 👏🏼 👏🏼

I had run into a similar experience during the flu outbreak with Menards. They allowed us in with masks but if we didn't have one, we could purchase one for a $1 at the door. I was so offended I walked away and never went back. John Menards is worth billions of dollars. Just a burr under my saddle but I'll get over it. 😉

When I made almond milk in the past, the fresh almond milk is absolutely delicious. I used dates for sweetening and for a variety of flavor I added either a splash of vanilla or a splash of maple. I’ve also saved the ground up almonds after straining the milk to dry and grind up for almond flour. I’m sure you will enjoy the almond milk and how simple it is to make.

I just purchased my first order from them so I don’t know what to look for. Also, does your family eat salad/leafy greens? Or is that only in the summer when the garden is abundant? Thanks!

I only buy certain things from azure, organic wheat berries 200pounds, organic whole barley 100lbs, organic rolled oats 200lbs and organic millet 100lbs. Some of it is to sprout for our chickens for the winter. Wheat berries we grind as we need it for making breads, pizza dough, and baking pastries, cakes and cookies. I can't find anything like that local to me being sold. Everything else is too high priced with azure. I will wait for half price sales at my local grocery chains and buy it in bulk then as many as i can afford that week. I buy organic chia seeds, organic tri color quinoa on half price. We grow organic elephant amaranth and that gives us about 200lbs a year of seed. 1lb of seed per head. We also grow organic black oil sunflower seeds for the chickens and wild birds and we grow mammoth sunflower seeds about 200 lbs a year. We save seeds from all of our veggies and flowers we grow. We have our own herbal garden and medicinal herbs as well. We can and freeze dry as much as possible. This past year, our freeze drier has been running almost daily. The economy and the grocery prices keep going up. We are trying to put up as much food as possible for over a years worth. We go through about 1400 quarts of food and beverages per year. We do not buy soda or juice at the stores. We make our own juice, and we filter our water and store it in glass or stainless steel. We are moving away from all plastic from food and beverages as much as possible. There are 12 of us in our home, we go through a lot of food per year. Just fridge oats with fruit, chia seeds, raw unfiltered honey and plain yogurt, we go through 4lbs oats every 5 days.

Yes, I’ve stopped going to Walmart, it’s so expensive and it’s all garbage. I’m not trying to offend you but I struggle to find anything not processed there besides produce is usually almost bad. I have found buying staples and making the most we can from scratch is comparable in price and sometimes cheaper but definitely more nutrient dense. I now mostly shop at Aldi and Costco and occasionally I have to get random things from Walmart like organic spices or I do prefer their organic coconut oil over any other I’ve found. Even their milk, eggs, and butter is more expensive than Costco or Aldi. It’s insane. Their prices are just out of control. Maybe azure doesn’t make sense for you but Walmart is not the cheapest.
@mush3199
@mush3199 4 сағат бұрын
I don’t believe that she is saying Walmart is “beneath her”. As a disabled person I use Walmart delivery to supplement my Azure bulk purchases. I find Azure bulk to be very comparable and frequently less expensive. I believe that the real savings comes in not using premade goods. My homemade food tastes better, is more nutritious and costs much less. That’s where Azure shines-in its one item ingredients for homemade preparations.

Have never heard of anyone being unhappy with Redmond salt. What happened?
@TheFromScratchFarmhouse
@TheFromScratchFarmhouse 5 сағат бұрын
A few things with Redmond salt... First, I noticed that the salt doesn't dissolve well due to the mineral content. Then, I found that it makes my pickles mushy. I'm guessing this is from the mineral content. Also, a simple annoyance for me is that I don't love the consistencies of their salts. The coarse is too coarse. The last straw for me was when it tested positive for lead. I don't believe any level of lead is "safe" which is what their company claims.
