A bunch of my car buddies use Tamco and have great things to say about it. I've been a big Matrix user for a long time. They are a copy of the PPG deltron system but WAY less expensive... There's nothing worse than a sales rep who hates to help you out... it's like they don't want to make money.

I've been using Tamco now for about 6 or 7 years and have been happy with it. Sprays really well and cars I have painted with it have held up. You are right. PPG is second to none but Tamco seems to be as good if not better, especially their top of the line product.

I own a body shop, and I can feel your pain on material costs. Today I ordered a gallon of white toner for my mixing bank, which will mix a lot of base coat don’t get me wrong, but the last time I bought it, it cost about $420. Today it has gone up to $968! I switched from Cromax to Nason for Primers and clears to try to control cost, and am extremely happy with that line. Clears for example went from $250ish / gal. to $120 / gal. respectively. I still use Cromax base coat and sealer because that’s what’s set up on my mixing bank, but after today’s purchase I may have to make more changes.

Have you Fred? I have seen some decent finishes on guitars built by individuals whose designs were their own but nothing that would appeal to the greater market which so far is interested in either vintage finishes or finishes that have that same vibe. My opinion is skued of course. I still make shellac and varnish and I still French polish. I love the nitro that others use as well. Share some examples if you can! Perhaps,(probably?), water based is the vintage of the future but I think it is a long ways away.

@@seanwoodburn2616 All my cars (5) have been painted in waterborne paint, it's all I have worked with for the past 15yrs. I have a friend who re-finishes furniture, he does my guitar bodies. I swear it takes almost as much work to finish a body, I'd rather finish a car any day. I love french polish on a figured body as well. Waterbourne makes for a beautiful show quality finish, but it goes on weird ( I can't explain it, it goes on milky grey, and really wet) and doesn't lend itself to guitars (at least for me). Just asking if anyone else has used it. Cheers

I have seen furniture done with it as well but I think expectations are different. My experience is similar to yours. Never been awestruck by water finish on guitars. You mix it 1x1 with reducer. So it's really 16oz of sprayable product. A Stratocaster sized body takes 3-6 oz total depending on color/coverage typically. So a 8 oz container will get you at least 3 guitars, maybe more.

While I have your ear...another question or 2.Have you ever used (grey auto ) primer as a base coat on a guitar (instead/in lieu of) a sealer? Would it make any difference on a body that was to be completely painted with no wood grain showing? I have a rattle can of grey primer that says it can be used to seal wood. I am thinking I will sand the wood down to 320 and spray a few light coats of primer until the wood is obscured. Then sand it flat before painting. Please advise. Cheers.
