Very well said. Thank you. I am a newly ordained Baptist minister and I wear a collar when going out witnessing in public settings, when visiting institutions, and when traveling, so that I am identified as one who has been called and set apart to serve in this special capacity.

I am a Baptist Minister, should I wear a Clerical Collar? I have been thinking about it, especially since I do most of my work outside of the walls of the Church. Baptists normally look down upon such things, claiming that they are Catholic. I enjoyed your video, and I do agree that Pastors do need a uniform.

I’m a Fundamental Holiness minister I seen a lot of us holiness preachers starting to wear the collar now. Just like the Baptist some of us look down to that stuff but now they’re starting to get popular in some holiness churches. I’m not against ministers wearing callers as long as they don’t wear it to be a show off because Jesus had to get on the Pharisees about that.

I'm a Baptist and go to a Baptist church and our pastor wears a clerical collar on some ocassions. Mostly when we take holy communion or special ocassions like baptisms and maybe weddings. Other times he simply wears his suit and tie and puts on his geneva gown or whatever it's called when he preaches. At times when we get visitors or new comers, they ask what denomination we are even though the sign says Baptist outside and all over. I find most protestants and evangelicals believe the clerical collars are a roman catholic thing when in reality it started with some Presbyterian ministers I believe and from there moved on to Anglicans, Methodists, Reformed, Baptists, Lutherans most of the protestant world etc and then it eventually made itself into the roman catholic sphere.

Thank you for the reason for the clerical collar. I compleated Roman Catholic Seminary and no one could give me a satisfactory reason why we wore roman collars. AlI I ever heard was that we had . done it for centuries. I assumed I wore a clerical collar to remind me who I serve, who anointed me, and just as important, to behave. I had been a wildland firefighter before seminary days and if I didn't have custody of my tongue all of the time, my language could get pretty salty. I've been pretty sick the last several years and mostly lay around in blue jeans and a white t-shirt. Your thoughts remind me I should wear my collar even if I'm home. I’ve always understood that when one wears the garb there are not themselves, they are their office. Like a cop can speak for the police for the police when he’s in uniform but he can only speak about the police out of uniform. My elderly cousin was in the clergy. We called him by his title while he had on the collar and his first name when he was not wearing it. I’d like to hear more about what occasions of daily life you do and don’t wear it.

@bpeper1365

@oneconcerned How many of the little schismatic ‘true churches’ lead people astray also? It would be interesting to see statistics about holiness and different denominations and churches. The real fact of the matter if I may make such a claim is that we cannot tell who is a believer and who isn’t, who will be saved at the end of the day and who won’t. We can make guesses and estimates, but that’s all. Really the only way to measure a church’s holiness is probably in how well they know the word, how well they preach it, and in what good works they do. ‘Dog collars’ help remind ordained ministers of their station and signal to others that this person is a minister. Yes, there are risks with such a separation, but there’re also risks in following regular guy preachers and their private revelations. No church is perfect, and every church and every individual is in a constant struggle as long as they live.

I love what you are saying. Question, what about the Geneva robe as opposed to the white robe?
@brendonpremkumar8207
@brendonpremkumar8207 Жыл бұрын
The Reformed churches emphasized preaching, rather than the Eucharist, as the center of worship. The black robe was worn showing the authority of the minister to proclaim the Word, similar to the robes worn by judges. The white robes are worn by Lutheran, Anglican, and Catholic priests as well as altar servers symbolizing their purity as baptized Christians. However, more and more Reformed and Presbyterian pastors are wearing white robes.

Really appreciated this, Dr. Leithart. Obviously, anyone could buy/wear clerical garb be they Christian or not (on Amazon Prime no less!). They could simply assume to themselves the authority to represent Christ and church (or at least get a great parking spot at the hospital!). Is there a way to govern who represents the true church? Or, should the collar be bestowed on someone by a/the church? Secondly, do you wear the collar whenever you're in public? I assume you don't wear it to mow grass or the like. But, do you wear it everywhere or only in an "official" church capacity? Thanks for suffering my questions. I thoroughly enjoy the ministry of the Theopolis Institute.

It seems to me that Paul is clear in Romans 6:19-22 that we are no longer slaves to sin and are instead slaves to righteousness and quote "slaves to God." All men are slaves. The question is, who are we slaves of? Christ or sin? We are united to Christ in our baptism (Romans 6:3-11, Galatians 3:27) thus washing away our shackles to sin and becoming slaves of Christ. So why would you say we are not slaves to God?

For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. But what fruit were you getting at that time from the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death. But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6: 20-23

I like anything that gives clarity to the distinction between the clerical office and the mere congregants, which is something many Protestant churches give no respect to. “I don’t respect your office, you’re not a good enough shepherd of your flock! You’re not in the Spirit enough!” Yada yada yada. Churches really need to quit Being run by a bunch of subjective garbage.

Show me where the apostles wore uniforms.The Pharisees did and you know how Jesus dealt with them. Every believer is a slave of Christ, not only pastors. Also every believer is a priest. The fullness of the Holy Spirit and of faith in a person plus his conduct and speech will show what he is, special clothes that show I'm different, special , important, are not needed.
