To all those who are commenting that I’m just talking about candids, I apologise if I have failed to effectively communicate what I mean in this video. This isn’t about simply shooting candid shots. Even candid shots still have a formula and an aesthetic that you can take from other photos. What I’m talking about is finding influence and inspiration from outside of photography. Trying to tap into your intuition and gut feelings to make images rather than letting preconceived ideas about what makes a good image be your driving influence.

I just recently shot a wedding and captured the brides best friends looking at a KZbin video of “how to tie a tie” as they are helping the groom figure out how to tie his tie. I have no idea how they reacted to that photo (as I haven’t asked), but as I was taking it I thought to myself “this is what a real wedding day is like. This is humanity in this day and age”. I love that you’re preaching to find the humanity and inspiration in something that can become so bland. Bravo!

A friend i work with was going to a wedding. His son, about ten years old had just bought a point and shoot camera and wanted to take photos of the wedding. My friend asked the wedding photographer if it was ok if his son shadowed him. The photography was fine with it and helped the lad along. The thing is, the lad being lower down and a few seconds behind (or infront) of the photographers shot got people when they were not posing. The result was of course was beautiful pictures of people before and after posing, being natural. and from a low down perspective. I think most prefered his photos to the pro's! Always enjoy your videos James. Keep it up!

Hi Chris, really liked you're comment. Similar thing happened to me. I went out with my 9 year old son taking some street shots in London. I had my camera and i gave him an old digital camera and off we went. His shots were fantastic. Most shots were of peoples torso's and faces taken from a lower angle. Im 6'4" so not pssible for me. Put into the mix a last minute wedding which you have to do on someone's behalf with only a name and an address to go to and yes you almost asking for trouble. It really happened to me and I felt proud to do a wedding on my own without any planning or so.

I think also part of the problem of why weddings photos are all the same, is because the bride and groom all want the same shots they see from other wedding photos. So wether you enjoy it or not, you are still expected to take those certain photos because you are getting "paid" to do your job. On the other hand, its also great when the couple lets you do your thing creatively and trust that you will take great photos because thats why they hired you. I completely agree with you though, its those candid shots/moments that you cant get from a formula that will always resonate with people the most. Great vid & message!

This is a good point, but also I feel like photographers haven't cultivated a variety of styles to choose from, so the average person isn't even exposed to the possibility of having personality in their photos! I'm already afraid that once I get married, I'll end up with a photographer who expects to take stock wedding photos essentially lol

I’m glad Photography is only a hobby, I hate weddings lol. People invest so much into their wedding and not a lot into their marriage. Divorce rate is so high ... I’d rather people have more anniversary celebrations that are as big and spendy as weddings because that’s a celebration worth celebrating...and then those would be a great gig for photography.

I was thinking this throughout the video, it's a shame that we can sometimes be control freaks to the point of not letting people take pictures of us unless we know what they are doing. That is why I used to hate taking pictures. But my first ever facebook picture was taken at my cousin's wedding, the photographer caught me smiling whilst talking to someone. After that I let people do their thing, as long as they show me the result it's all cool.

This video really opened my eyes. Culling through images, I've always been obsessed with focus and sharpness. I would often skip over an image that I liked because I deemed it as being slightly out of focus, and I thought the client would notice and complain. You've made me realize that the feeling is more important than the technicality of the photo. I've changed my ways because of this for the better, thank you!

I'm an amateur photographer, so firstly thank you for your insightful video. Secondly, we had a 'professional' and very expensive photographer for our wedding. What we got in the end were wedding photos, and not very good ones, just like everyone elses. There is nothing unique or 'us' about them. None of them were edited and only a handful were what I considered decent. Having a photographer who listens and really takes care to capture the couple's personality and quirks is much more important than the perfect picture every time.

I'm not disagreeing with anything you're saying in this, but I'd like to spin it a bit if I may? First off we got married back in the late 80s where the photographer shot bout half a dozen rolls of 120, probably on a Mamiya 645, and that was that. Guests arriving, various groups outside the church, job done: none of this trendy stuff you see now on Pinterest (which of course hadn't been invented!). So we got pretty much what everybody else got, plus some nice quirky photos some of our guests took. I agree that these days there seems to be a lot of formula ideas, and given how many images you get for your wedding now then there should be space to go outside the box. I watch a lot of fairly non cerebral telly, mainly cop shows ( never seen Girls, have no opinion of Lena Dunham, hold that delete button), and yes it's formulaic. But I don't want to relax in the evening with something which resembles my real life, where people have realistic arguments and plausible dialogue. I like to sink into what I expect like a warm bath and have a clear structured narrative I don't have to unpick, characters I understand and yes, even genuine movie hacking (it's encrypted at the firmware level!"). Maybe the thing about weddings is that they supposed to be unlike real life, the day we get married is supposed to not reflect our ordinary experience? Maybe the reason for the forumula photography is because we want to be part of an event with different rules to our lives? I love some of the quirky photos from our wedding, but I also like the very 1980s posed ones because they reflect that day when we were out of our ordinary lives and part of this event in which everything happens to you as the stars of this other narrative. None of which, for a second, negates what you said, and you know if we got remarried today I'd hire you in a heartbeat after this video and give you a free hand on the shutter!

Thanks. Interesting thoughts. We all like different stuff and that's fine. Although, I'd argue that film and TV can still be lighthearted and escapist while feeling a bit more real. I think you're right about that fantasy desire. I would always advise that photographers try to get both the fantastical and the observational when shooting a wedding. I think that's one of the reasons I like wedding photography - one minute you're orchestrating a portrait shoot and the next, you're wandering around being a street photographer.

I agree. I have been shooting weddings for 4 years now and my background is commercial photography. Many times I love the quirky "different" or artistic shots but when I give the bride and groom 300 shots and have them narrow it down they rarely pick any of those. I will get 100 of the same shots that I've done for everyone else chosen for their album. I think it's like women saying they want an original designer wedding dress but then 80% pick out an A line with a sweetheart top. Most of the favorite "artistic" shots the bride picks out are very commercial looking slick shots I can do in my sleep. It just is what it is. I still love pushing myself to capture the great unexpected moments of people connecting wth each other and the camera, it is my shots mostly for me, though.

All I see in formulaic shots is the fakeness. Like my uncle's one arm being slightly bent out of discomfort of posing for a camera (something he isn't used to), or the fake smiles, with deadness in the eyes and a stiff neck... I never liked them and if I ever get married I won't do them, since I won't be hanging any of those in my house anyway.

I really like this point of view, where photography (and almost everything) can be taken from both a very technical/professional angle and a more spontaneous authenticity. I am a nature/travel photographer who mainly focuses in still subjects, but not long ago I took my camera to my cousin´s wedding and I was able to take a lot of shots from the family´s perspective, pictures that most photographers would dismiss as they may not be the most flattering, but that show real happiness, real emotion, and that was something important to capture.

Interesting take. I do always find that the pictures that were taken before digital cameras really took off, which is when I was in middle school, came across as so much more genuine and better representing the experience. Maybe because it wasn't possible to take too many, so people wanted to just capture the moment, rather than to capture the moment in the best possible light, which is what we do now and then often feels a little disingenuine. My colleague got in full make up and dress, and called in all of her bridesmaids the week after the wedding in order to re-shoot photos because there was better lighting than on their wedding day, which had been rainy. In the end those looked better but everyone who had attended the wedding knew they were staged so they had lost their heart and it was visible. They were no longer photos from their wedding day but from a random Saturday.

great thoughts - you put a lot of effort into your video! in short it is more to provide reportage skill and do less directing. its about the decisive moment and to be ready for it.

The reason I won't touch wedding photography anymore is that no matter how creative of a photographer you are, it's going to be a minority of couples who are up for it. More than any other genre of photography I can think of, weddings are those for which the clients most desire and insist on all those horrible, trite, cliches and mimicry of established tropes. There's no way to make wedding photography not boring. Because no matter how outside the box you're able to think, the vast majority of your work will still be banal and unoriginal... because that's unfortunately what most couples will want. Yeah, you can try some stuff here and there, but if avoiding cliche matters to you then wedding photography is not a good field to get into.

@@cehegin2575 That's correct. All I have is a desktop computer and my phone. I've seen snippets of television when eating at restaurants. The first thing that strikes me is how dumbed down everything is. They seem to rely solely on tropes and formulaic production. If you watch a show that's trying to explain a basic concept, the concept will be explained over and over again as if the audience has no ability to understand, has no attention span, or has the memory of a goldfish. They never go deep enough into any subject. They're trying to make a product that is palatable for everyone, but ends up suitable for no one. Reading books and watching specialized content online is the way to go.

It brought me back to WHY I wanted to press that shutter button. Especially when I saw that photo of the smiling bride mid-kiss. That's what photography is about. The moments. Beautiful. 💯

Thank you Jamie, this video has inspired me. I also really love the ‘in between’ moments during shoots, where people’s guards are down and they are at their most natural. Those are almost always my favourite keepers and often my clients make a certain sound when they see them, as if to say ‘Wow I didn’t know you shot that but I’m really glad you did!’.
