Enjoyed your lecture very much. I made only one wet plate in an old Thornton Pickard camera of the trees at the back of my parents house. Tat was 50 years ago, when I was apprenticed as a camera operator in the block making department of The Newcastle Morning Herald. Wet plate, was the process used to make the high contrast negatives required to get the image onto zinc plate that would be eventually etched.

This is the second best one of these B&H presentations I've seen. Informative, intelligent, and has a point of view. Great job.

Daguerreotypes are images on a silver layered metal sheet, not just copper as stated in this. In the 19th century they were also made with silver on brass, they can also be made on pure silver sheets. Exposure times were much less than stated here and the advent in portraiture was due to a combination of the advances in optics and the addition of an extra halogen (bromine) to the process.

We have considered that as a solution but lowering the shutter speed unfortunately introduces other issues, i.e. motion blur. However, we are aware of the issue and we're continuing to seek out other remedies. We realize that as it stands, the presentation on video is much less than ideal, and we thank you for your patience as we try to ameliorate the situation.

Ha, it's Sally Mann's fault that I do wetplate as well! Great!

Thanks, love these B&H. Why not sync the shutter on the camera to compensate for the out of sync flickering projector? It's headache inducing.

Maybe it's only me that feel too depressed after listen to this for a while. The speaker's tone suggests life is too painful

Thought she was delightful. Not sure where you got that except for that one question she got from the guy that rambled on and on pontificating about his own thoughts on photography only to get the question which he could have asked without any of the information that preceded it.

Same way that a real book and a hardback feel and mean more. The fact that it becomes effected by the life that lives in. I have books with dog eared pages, the binding stressed; same as artefact occurrences in the collodion process it just ‘feels’ special/different.

She was saying that a lot of wet plate photographers are beginners not really controlling the process but they are producing interesting effects. It's like the old saying that if you put an infinite amount of monkeys on typewriters eventually they would create the works of Shakespeare.

You don't need an infinite amount of monkeys, only a handful of horny ones. Shakespeare is overrated as fuck.

Wonderful presentation, but what happened to her? There are no links or other mentions of her that I can find on the internet. Did she die?

Hi Michael, unfortunately we could not find any new info on the presenter. But, if you have anymore questions about the process, you can checkout www.penumbrafoundation.org/ . As, the speaker was a teacher there. Thanks for checking out the video!

Not a lot of real nuts and bolts info in this. Very brief history. No real explanation way it is coming back, then she spoke about her work. Interesting enough, but not really a "Why is this piece." More of a "What is happening."
