There's two arguably insignificant scenes I absolutely adore in this film. The first one is when Shizuku and her sister are fighting and we see a shot of their dad coming home from work, while coming up the stares, he passes a woman who lives above them and he gives her space to walk down and she apologizes for cramping him. That's it, he nods and goes up and the movie continues and would've continued the same without that scene, but I like the film way more with that scene. It's just so...regular. Like it's such an everyday thing and it also lets us somehow see or pay attention to the perspective of the father even though we learned literally nothing. Movies just tend to revolve around the main character and the viewers don't rly get to see much out of that story or out of that character's perspective. That scene just showed that the world, this story wasn't revolving around Shizuku, it just showed that there's so so so many people with their own stories and it's a big world, the main character of the film is just one of them, trying to figure herself out amidst all this. Then the other scene I love is the end credits, while they roll the credits, we see people walking on that bridge area where Shizuku and Seji passed by on their way to that place. We see all these people, all distinctly set apart from eachother in such a subtle way, all passing by with their own thoughts and things to do. We also see Seji and Shizuku riding back on that bridge but they aren't pointed out from the crowd, they just blend in. Some people wouldn't even notice them. This also just emphasizes the point the film made earlier. That Seji and Shizuku are just TWO of all these people and that's it's a huge world with endless stories. It's such a simple and beautiful truth. Makes you think alot. Maybe i'm reading too much into it lmao but I just think it's wonderful

I watched Whisper of the Heart for the first time when I was about to graduate from high school and had to make major choices about my future. I was unclear about what I wanted to do with my life and to see how passionate Shizuku and Seiji were about their dreams made me ugly cry. They were so young and had so much ambition and yet here I was, a majorly depressed high school senior with no dreams or ambitions. It inspired me to go out and try to find what inspired me to have the same drive as Shizuku and Seiji.

I have a problem of being buried in self-doubt to the point I can’t remember who I am, but as I watch this I remember the reason why I was enchanted by this film in the first place; because it spoke to who I was as my own person, and that’s why I always retrace myself when I watch it. Now I'm 14, and watched it few hours ago and I feel like I have wasted my life so much and missed out on living. I have so much mixed emotions about this, I didn't know how sad I was with the way I was living. I don't know if I'm good enough for any of the jobs that seem interesting to me, I may want to be an animator or artist, yet I don't know anything yet. I really like the connection between this movie, the cat returns and kikis delivery service. In kikis delivery service, the old man that was in the clocktower is the same old man in whisper of the heart, in whisper of the heart the cat barren is the same one that is in the cat returns the barren in the cat returns even mentions his creator. Further more moon or muta in whisper of the heart is the same muta in cat returns and his full name is ronaldo moon. Theres a few more bits and pieces that connects all of these films together but im lazy so i wont write em.

The Cat Returns is canonically a spinoff of Whisper of The Heart based on the story that Shizuku wrote. Even the protagonist in TCR was following a cat around until she found a "treasure", just like in how she found the shop in WotH. I like to think that Shizuku finally polished the story like Seiji's grandpa told her to and it got adapted into a movie

Agree wholeheartedly. I am a long time fan of Miyazaki, but Whisper Of The Heart is my favorite Ghibli film. And I think it's one of the very best films ever made about adolescence. Both the young and mature can be, at the very least, inspired by the film's wisdom. A funny little personal anecdote I have with this film: I first watched this in my early 20's, at the time I had a friend who's little sister was just turning 17. I bought her a copy of this film thinking it could maybe help her out with whatever 17 year old's deal with. I'm in my early 30's now, and a couple years ago she texted me saying she had watched the film and how much she loved it. Not sure why she waited 10 or so years to tell me that, hahaha.

My absolute fave anime--PERIOD! Not just the best of Ghibli; and you hit all the notes: it's a look at life, love and the creative process. And I really can't think of another movie that has NO VILLAIN! Director Yoshifumi Kondo died a few years after wrapping this film, and as part of his eulogy, Hayao Miyazaki said that Kondo was hopeless at playing "Lifeboat", because he always wanted to save EVERYBODY! That says so much about this anime...

This is actually really reasurring. I've always been scolded by my English teachers because I'd put a lot of detail into the setting and characters but my climaxes were always lackluster and unexciting because I hated approaching cruel truths. This expands my horizon's a little, I don't need to be ruthless with my characters to make interesting stories. Thank you for this information.

This is probably up there fighting for the title as my fave Ghibli film, even as one that I saw after all the other more notable films. There's just something so tender and overflowing with emotion about this film, I always attributed that to how perfectly, yet simply, it captures the emotion of a young lady experiencing love for a partner and love for a craft full force for the first time. I found it really relatable in that aspect, I was probably in a really similar mindset when I first saw this movie and it captures that feeling really well with it's story and visuals while being simple and innocent enough to feel very real. Thanks for making a video on such an underrated movie!!

My two favorite parts of this movie is one of the dream sequence where Shizuku is desperate to find a missing part of her story to make it great...the illustration of the scene is where she's looking for that bright piece that will elevate her writing...then when she founds it it's revealed to be a dull bird chick and the scream afterwards....chills. It's every artist nightmare. To strive for greatness only for your work to be mediocre. Then the scene when she finished the book where she's anxiously waiting for the old man's critic of her work. You can see how she see's it as something as a fight or flight situation...she's desperate. Then when the old man says his honest opinion, she broke down crying. Relieved. It's just......auugghhh the feels. It hits hard!!

Couldn't have said it better! Whisper of the Heart, too, is my favorite anime! It doesn't indulge in over-the-top fantasies like many other animes, but is a heartwarming slice-of-life film about Shizuku, a young girl whom we all can relate to. It's a wonderful film in which mundane scenes are filled with subtlety and nuance. At the end, I feel that we know so intimately Shizuku as a person-her fears, emotions, innermost thoughts-that it's like meeting someone you never will forget.

I've watched a few ghibli films, and tbh I've not liked most of them. But whisper of the heart for some reason strikes very true for me. As a creator myself, Shizuku's emotions are so realistic, relatable and genuine, that it just strikes such a chord with me. The film has one main theme, but it explores that theme so tenderly and effectively. Because of how gently the film goes, imo it really shows the process and emotion that comes with being a creator, finding your path, establishing identity, determining self-worth, proving that self-worth, and other emotions/themes that come with the creative craft. I absolutely love whisper of the heart. It's beautiful because it's very accurate, and very human.

I remember when I first watched this anime with my mom, I was only ten. With the combination of beautiful pictures and romantic story line, I fell in love with this masterpiece immediately even though I don’t get much takeaways. I watched the anime again when I was in my teenage, i felt like I kinda grab the underlying meaning of it since it was so relatable and gave me the courage to stay positive while deciding my future major for university. Now I am in my early 30s, I still enjoy this anime very much. Especially during low times, the nostalgia aura and calming effect in this anime catches me and reminds me how I came along as a little girl I used to be. This underrated gem will forever dwell on my top list amongst all Ghibli’s, I wish more people can appreciate it.

whisper of the heart is so comfy. my favorite movie for the universe is nausicaa, its been my favorite since i was a child. whisper of the heart is so different from nausicaa but i can appreciate it more now because its the kind of media i want to make. its feels personal and regular, its comforting, soft, subtle, all the while moody and atmospheric. im working on a love story that takes place in small town america, in a similar middle/high school time frame. im trying to focus on the characters and dynamics between them since its very plot light, most of the story is driven by interactions. the title is a wip, but im thinking of calling it “the wind whispers our secrets”, paying homage to whisper of the heart and the wind rises.

Just watched this movie and thought it was amazing. I really related to Shizuku’s story too. I wanna work in the film industry but it’s not a very standard job. I’m in the exact same position as her wondering if I should go to high school or not and I’ve been very lacking in confidence and doubtful that I could make it... but this film has totally inspired me to go for it :) The scene at the end is literally where I am right now. Loved the characters and obviously the story and the animation was beautiful. So underrated

personally what makes this movie so great for me is that it literally is a "real" slice of life. or atleast that's how i'd call it. lots of animes these days that fall in this genre sure can be called a slice of life but most of the happenings on those are literally stuff that would rarely happen to someone irl and the only thing going for them is that they don't have supernatural things going on for them and that's how they probably came to be called "slice of life." i hope this makes sense lmao im not dissing anything here i love slice of lifes these days but i am merely pointing out why whisper of the heart for me is so distinct. it makes feel at home and gives me the familiar vibe and vision of a life i once called home. it made me feel as if i was in the movie like i was experiencing similar situations even though i hadn't. oh and can i just say the animation and just everything about it is👌 edit: tmi - i literally came across this masterpiece of a film listening to "i like me better" slowed down ver. on youtube and i happen to get curious about the gif in the background bcs it seemed like a movie or anime i'd love to watch so i did some reverse searching and oh boi was i not wrong about this movie at all

I watched Whisper of the Heart then immediately after I watched The Cat Returns. As a young writer watching this film I felt so called out. It’s definitely my favorite movie and seeing The Cat Returns made me have an even deeper appreciation for it. After watching I understood how all those little things influenced Shizuku and inspired her. How the story she started out with changed drastically from what it used to be. Like Shizuku, I seriously admired the people who found their passions and worked relentlessly to polish their talent for it. I didn’t know what direction I should go and what path was right for me. I refound my passion through annoying the piss out of my former teacher and am currently working towards it. Unfortunately, this is where the Kiki’s Delivery Service labor-of-love-burnout comes in. If you find your calling, remember to take breaks.

I love Spirited Away and it was the start of my love affair with Ghibli. Among them all, Whisper of the Heart is my favourite. It is seriously the most underrated and the heroine is one I relate to most. I feel a personal connection as I am in academia. The anxiety, the confusion, the fear of writing down my thoughts haunted me for a long time and it only took the magic of Whisper of the Heart to get to write. I am working towards a doctoral degree and this movie really was a chicken soup movie - something that comforted me when I'm not doing good. A big round of applause for making this video 👍👍

Every time I'm feeling upset with my progress in any aspect of my life and need a bit of a comforting pep talk I watch whisper of the heart. It never fails to calm me down and renew my motivation. And perhaps because it brings me back to when I was a little older than Shizuku but in the same spot in my life it always makes me cry lol. At the opening! just something about the nostalgic vibes I guess lol. Thank you for putting into words all my feelings about why I love this movie.

Seeing my struggles as an artist being perfectly portrayed with Shizuku was really amazing.

I connected so much with this movie, it has brought me to tears multiple times without it even trying. I am at the stage of life that shizuku is at and seeing her strugle to find herself or her passion for the future really resonated in me as I, myself have been dealing with problems about picking what I should do in the future. I can really feel the impact when she realized she dont know what she will do in the future or what she wants. The emotions she felt really brought me to tears as Ive been feeling that for months on end, being pressured by just hearing others ambitions and goals for the future because having none yourself. I also felt just very lonely :" seeing her love story with reiji is heartwarming but after awhile kinda makes you feel empty, but thats what Im trying to accomplish, Im trying to have a stage in my life where can I watch this movie and have a warm feeling rather than an empty feeling (if that even make sense).

I started writing in elementary. One of my best, which I lost ages ago, was a class assignment to write a story about a Gnome. I think I got a good grade on it. I have a overactive imagination that I still have today. I continue writing up to high school when I realize how weak my earlier works were and abandoned them. I still write, but I draw inspiration from others, from reading books, playing video games, watching movies, like this one. Studio Ghibli films are the best and everyone must watch them at least ones in their lives, my first was My Neighbor Totoro back in elementary when they played it for movie day, another one that interested me was a cartoon version of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. In the 90’s they made a lot of cartoons about nearly everything. Still Studio Ghibli is the best even if your not interested in anime, or ever will be.

It's one of the most underrated and underappreciated Ghibli movie besides Only Yesterday. Personally, as a small time writer myself Shizuku is very much relatable to me. Even though it lacks the standard Ghibli's style of fantasy elements it nonetheless delivers a strong emotional impact with its motivational message and real life relatability plot as opposed to being fantastical like other Ghibli movies. I believe most teenagers undergo stages in their lives similar to Shizuku's and this movie is sure to inspire them to be emotionally stable and help build confidence in times of crises. Apart from the wonderful quality of the story, the Japanese version of 'Country Road' had me fall in love with this movie.

I liked this movie very much. Together with "Only yesterday", "when marnie was there", "from up on poppy hills" and "grave for the fireflies", it is one of my favorite movies from Studio Ghibli. The movies of Miyazaki are nice and all, but they are fantasy movies. I do not seem to feel strongly connected to characters from fantasy movies. In fact, the Miyazaki movies that I liked most are "Kiki's delivery service", "Spirited away", "my neighbor totoro", because the main characters are felt very human and more psychologically developed. For me, this is the key for winning the audience hearts; not just a colorful fairy tale with stunning drawings, but human like characters, with emotions, and less "cool hero" attitude

I had watched the movie like 10 years ago, of course I loved it. Today, I just finished watching this movie again. It's amazing how this movie keeps getting better when you're older, wiser, and more knowledgeable. At that time, I can't appreciate how great were adults around her, i.e. Nishi-jiisan and her parent; they supported and empowered her to become a strong woman and a soon-to-be writer. It makes me want to become an adult like them.

This film is so underrated even by fans of Studio Ghibli (same for exemple for Poppy Hill), you're so true to give it some some attention, that's a really sensible movie: i think many of us even if we aren't into writing can relate to Shizuku experience, as we had same as preteens. Personnaly i would still have add something about her family, who probably participate in her love for books (her dad's a librarian) and are so understanding: best parents in a Ghibli movie. I would also like us to have a thought for Yoshifumi Kondō, who died way too soon (at 47 by a disease that's very common in Japan: excess of work) and can have produce many other jewel like this one: RIP!

The thing that stood out for me is the famous scene where Seiji plays the violin and Shizuku sings. At first she is deeply insecure, just facing away from Seiji. As the song progresses she becomes more and more confident in her body language, takes short glances at him, and towards the end she really shines, engages with all the musicians and really looks like she is in a good place. Its like she realizes that her writing (the lyrics) is nothing to be ashamed of, people apreciated it!

What about you said the writing, I get that, because during my early teens and teens, I was a like Shinji, so writing small stories, parodies and poems was a gate way, to do what she did, express ur feelings, thoughts and emotions and often show them, to friends and language teachers to see what they thought about it, and they like it, because of that, I entered the poem contest of my High School and won 😄. But sadly, I lost the diary where I kept those during moving between houses 😢. About foundation of the self, u got Shinji ark in NGE and Vincent in Ergo Proxy, too.
