I'd advocate studying the long guards in boxing, muay thai and MMA. The positioning is extremely similar to the Jong sao. That being said, the Jong sao is very effective at occupying the center and forcing attacks to go around (Biu, Gan, Fook) or try to go through (Pak, Tan). The have being there in the void gives the option of a lop dar in addition to the punches, palms, finger strikes. Hand Fighting (aka: chi sao) is readily available as well.

Dear Sifu, i have been a fan of your approach to wing chun teaching since the early days you have published your wing chun video instructionals. It sure helped me understand the importance of structure and proper use of wing chun techniques which can be applied to any other martial art. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Best regards Al janabi

I actually used that move in real life. NEVER use it to box. I used it to deflect an attack. I like some of these videos but, I can tell alot of them have not been seriously attacked. So, to me it's unrealistic.

The extended Jong, is for good reason. The extended arm, gives you more Distance / Space, and Time.. to be able to defend. Think of it like a Sword, or Pole Staff. You dont hold the sword right next to your head... You extended it out in front of you, for distance, time, protection... etc. Same with a Staff.. You also should never be randomly changing your positions, without a good reason. Only move, when the OP gives you a good Reason to move / act. Those that hop around, and or are constantly trying to move around with various footwork... are wasting energy, and Jeopardizing their Stability, in the process. When a good fighter rushes in... you dont want to be caught "Mid-Hop". Nor do you want to be half way between a footwork transition... where your structure is not nearly as Strong... and your weight distribution.. is not Optimal to what you need to do.. at that moment. In that case of the attack... you often have a fraction of a second, to react properly. In one example... the OP takes a step towards you, and you instantly kick their Kneecap.. ending the fight. Being that you were waiting in Stance for them to enter... you were 1000% ready.. with ultra precise timing / Reaction Speeds. However... if you were randomly walking around... and switching up your hands randomly... and the OP suddenly rushes in... Its very likely that you might have your mass over your Lead leg... making it impossible to Kick his knee on the way In. As such.. you have already lost one range of combat... and due to your hand transitions... might have been caught mid-transition when he rushed in... leaving you with a Weak defensive structure. This means that you will have to do something drastic, to try to recover quickly... and if he is really good, it just might not be enough. While I respect every Teacher out there... I can tell you that Most of these teachers have never really sparred Heavy Contact, against various Non-Wing Chun fighters. Most especially, against fighters that are Far outside of their own weight and strength classes. I have. I used to spar against fighters from all different arts, every weekend. Most of which were Blackbelt level fighters. Many whom competed regularly... including competing in Kyokushin Karate full contact events, as well as Muay Thai fights. One way you can tell if a Teacher has a high level of fighting experience... is to look at their fingers. If they are spread apart while they perform their techs... you know they do not have a lot of actual hardcore fighting experience. When I was sparring heavy / full contact... I learned the hard way... that spread fingers, and a hanging or forwards thumb... end up getting Caught on Uniforms / Clothing, Wrenched in various directions... from collisions with the OPs limbs, and even getting directly Jammed (Jammed fingers, are some of THE most PAINFUL injuries, that Ive ever suffered). After like 2 jammed finger incidents, 3 or so hyper-extension finger injuries, and at least one wrenched thumb incident... I learned to keep my fingers (and thumb) together at ALL times. The fingers have no real strength and structural strength... on their Own. However... when they are all together... you have a much stronger whole-unit... that cant easily suffer impact based damages. Just think of it like a Toy Model.. that has small thin pieces.. vs... a toy that has thick and robust pieces. The small thin pieces easily break off... where as the thicker structures, do not easily break... even when dropped from a good height. Teachers can provide valuable knowledge... but, they dont always have All of the Answers (and or all of the Correct / Best answers) ... and... they often are not anywhere near "Masterclass" level fighters. Knowing material and performing it Decently... is very different from being Completely Flawless, within Extreme Pressure Situations. Yipman himself used to ask his students "How do you know that Im teaching you REAL Wing Chun?". It was meant to make the student realize... that they Only way to actually know, is to learn various other WC methods, as well as other arts methods... and to Learn, Master, and Physically TEST, all of these things out, for yourself (Rather than merely relying on pure blind Acceptance). According to what Ive read... Yipman himself learned at least 2 different versions of Wing Chun, himself. He also later changed the forms.. to suit "modern students" (whom would never train as hardcore as the Past ancient fighters), and Space restrictions (space was very limited, and Expensive... in Hong Kong).

@@benjaminmartin2934 Yes. The Oblique Kick. Wing Chun is not a Sport art. It was designed for war... and to "End" the opposition as quickly as possible. Also, the first range of combat.. is Long Kick range. So, if you have allowed the attacker to get past your kick range.. you have given them an additional opportunity to get closer to being able to hit you. Now... if you are merely sparring against someone... and do not want to seriously injure them.. you have to slightly alter your methods. You can still use that kick.. but you have to reduce the impact potentials, so that it is very Mild. It should have just enough power, that it causes some pain.. and makes them realize that its a danger to them.. otherwise, they will just think its a worthless technique. Also, if using this kick in sparring... make sure not to hyper-extend the attackers leg. I generally only kick their knee, when their knee is bent forwards (such as when they are stepping towards you, and their mass is on their lead leg). Hyper extending the knee, can result in some really bad injuries. Also, when sparring with this kick.. and not using it with enough power to harm / stop the Opponent... you will have to be prepared to use quick footwork, and other hand techs... to either move out of range, and or to deal with the OPs continued attacks. In most cases, where you dont want to seriously harm the opponent, or attacker... you will follow up with a vertical fist strike to their foreheads, for an easy Knockout. Just make sure that you have fully mastered short range power.. so that you actually have reliable Knockout power. A True Internal based Wing Chun "Master", should have Lethal level strikes, from less than 2 inches of arm travel. Most practitioners do not have such potentials, because they never trained seriously, to develop short range power (Fajin - Explosive Power). If you do develop it... you only need to use between 10 to 15% of your potentials, to cause an easy Knockout. I used to do this punch, at about 15%.. and had no issues in knocking out any fighter that I chose to use it against. I will add... that if you are using the Oblique kick.. more like a Stop-Kick (instead of a damaging kick)... that you can often use that same leg to launch a few more rapidfire kicks, to other places on the Opponents body. For example.. kicking the knee.. then kicking their abdomen or hip bone. I also often use Toe-Stabbing kicks.. stabbing the inner thigh muscles, and the inner hip fold area (between the thigh muscle and the hip bone, close to the groin area). Of course, I used to condition my toes on the sandbags, so that they are very strong, and wont break on impact. Never even attempt that, unless you have well conditioned toes. I do not believe that the toe stabbing kick is taught in the art... however, its a mirror technique to the Finger Strikes (Biu Gee), so I see no reason why it shouldnt be used. Its good for getting additional range, such as a long distance toe-stabbing kick to the abdomen. Many other modern sportized arts, have removed techniques like the Oblique Kick, and many of them even Ban attacks to the Opponents legs. And while some arts that still allow kicks to the legs.. only kick with round kicks... instead of Straight Kick vectors. This is of course, mostly for safety reasons. However, I also believe that many of the "ELITE" rulers of this world.. do not want the general slave class citizens, to have high level combat knowledge and abilities. As such, they have corrupted many of these arts, intentionally.

I have used it, and it has served me well. It's not just that I won by KO, even better, I won by not fighting. the other guy threw some punches with all their effort, he got deflected or pushed back while being talked to, and he regained his senses. Outside of a ring, psychology is key. Even if you find robbers in your house. I have won like this about a dozen times in "the streets"TM

Not all the techniques will work because you don't have time to response to quick strikes coming in but putting your arms out in that position will obstruct them.

Anderson Silva cross-trained some WC, and if you watch him fight while he's backed against a cage, you'll see him throw WC-inspired blocks and traps constantly. Or at least you would if you actually knew enough about WC to speak on it with any reasonable authority.

I don’t think you know real boxing. It’s called dirty boxing and George Foreman was known for trapping. You know who he is? If you do you’d know he’s known for trapping.
