Japanese media actually have a lot of politics within them. The Japanese often just like to explore the thematic instead of just picking a side and hammering everbody in with the message. Even in stories where there is a lot of protagonist bias that makes it clear, the others are the bad guys, they are still allowed to present some good sides of their direction, while the heroes can show that their own direction is not completely flawless. Like in a game where you fight against video game piracy, one of the enemies defends it because "what about children who can't pay for games?" Or they explore them in a more abstract way. Like instead having two sides of white people and POCs who hate each other, they have humans and animal people, allowing them to explore the issues they want to talk about without pointing fingers towards a specific group of real-life people.

The most frustrating part is that you can create diverse characters with different sexualities and skin tones amd gender identities and make the good. Heck, you could write a story explicitly about that sort of thing and make it good. In fact, it has been done plenty of times. But it takes care for the characters. It takes putting in the effort to make them more than just their race and sexuality. It takes giving the characters connections with other characters based on more than just their identity, because yes, a friendship can start like that, but that sort of thing can't sustain a friendship. But these creators don't seem to realise that and it's frustrating.

Naoki Yoshida nailed it with that comment. They have a setting and they want it to appear realistic for that world. So much media injects diversity and it just breaks the verisimilitude of the story. That multiracial/ethnic village in the Castlevania Netflix series made absolutely no sense. People with a common language, culture, values and identity are able to better work together, organize and live harmoniously with each other. Even if we assume such a wide array of people can come together and form a society overtime they'd mix customs and interbreed till they become homogenous in every way, especislly if we're talking about a small village with only a handful of families in an era of time where very few people ever travelled outside their little village. Also another major reason to have a homogenous look for a group is the visual story telling. In DOTA Dragon's Blood there was an isolated Elven Village named Coedwig and everyone their dressed in the same style of clothes, had the same pale skin and fair features. Aside from being a more realistic setting you immediately can tell these people are part of the same faction just by looking at them. You could differentiate them from their enemies from the Nightsilver Woods who while more racially diverse with both humans and elves, everyone had the same clothing aesthetic of as well. So when the Coedwig Elves clad in their Greens and Brown attire fought the Selemene cultist from the Nightsilver Woods in their Blue and White Armor you weren't ever confused who was fighting who. Visual design also allows us to associate distinct, but related groups such as how in Star Wars the Clone Troopers have White Armor like their successor the Stormtroopers, or that the Republic used triangular capital ships like the Empire.
@jjhh320 Жыл бұрын
I agree with most of what you've said and like your comment. Thank God for Square taking a stand and making their point in a respectful, straightforward way. I would disagree about Castlevania's village though. A problem which that show definitely had was the village's unnecessarily gurlboss leader and the way she treated Alucard, even in spite of more compelling female characters existing like Lenore or even Carmilla. But Wallachia isn't too far from Constantinople, so you'd have a lot of Greeks, Slavs, and even Turks in the nearby region if they felt inclined to mix in. From that region down to Anatolia, there were lots of people historically moving about and territory changing hands. A case could be made for any of them to stay and settle in a fictional village, whether they be 1st generation or longer.

True. When I (a non-white) read stories, I never really pay attention to the characters' skin tones; it's the actions they take and the emotional chords they strike that matters. Like how in a dream you don't identify people via their faces but via the emotional responses they elicit in you when you see them; if there's a theme or emotion I can relate to, I put down the book and sigh "Ahhh...right. I know what they're feeling." Also later, in life, at any given point, I would encounter something or someone that reminds me of certain plots or characters; and even if it's not a 100% match, as long as there are some applicability, I will have flashbacks to not my own memories but the plot of the book, almost as if I've incorporated experiences I pick up from stories into my own. To me the woke mindset of "the character must look like me for me to relate to them" is utterly alien. No they don't. Hell, the character I grow to relate to recently is a bespectacled dinosaur hermit living in Mesoamerica even though I'm a human living in Asia.

I have always preferred the way of story telling used by Manga. Manga’s usually are really good at letting the images tell the story and not loads of text 🤷♀️ Also within manga you can find any topic under the sun. I recently read one about the creator of cup noodles and another about raising an autistic child. I also enjoy some shonen/shojo-ai stories and geniounly want the two leads to end up together because the story and characters are interesting. And I have no connections to cup noodles, autism or being gay at all 😅 A good story and interesting characters really is all you need, the subject then can be anything at all.

THIS! if your concept is interesting, and your characters fun to learn about then you could do almost any setting or subject successfully. Thing is that writers are only capable of writing personalities they are familiar with. When you force a writer to write a character archetype they have zero experience with, you'll end up with a poorly written character.

@@ashtongiertz8728 That's why a truly good writer should always follow the rule of art and creativity which is to never stagnate yourself because then you end up being a one-trick pony and it makes you predictable as hell. Merrin is such a badass and yet she still shows her vulnerable side to Cal and even snuggles up to him which was so cute coupled with her social awkwardness. While I enjoy characters like Miles Morales I've never needed a character to look like me to or share some cultural similarities to care about them. I don't plan on playing FF16 but if I did the colors of the characters wouldn't even be a thought. That said let's not pretend that if the next Call of Duty had you play as a black soldier in WW2 where the campaign followed real all black companies and regiments all throughout we wouldn't see "They're trying to force woke black BS on us" by a lot of people either.

I'm glad to see Square Enix is pushing back against woke revisionism and modernism in gaming. After all, it's fantasy. The point of fantasy is that it doesn't have to reflect present day society. Remember when people used to just care about how fun a game was, not caring about all these identity politics and shit? I remember those days, I don't think I ever really cared on why I never saw more POC in games, or as main characters, as I only cared about the story, characters, and if it was enjoyable to play through. Now it just seems like that's what all everyone cries about, and stirring up stupid controversy over something that's not overall important; compared to more pressing matters like game performance, being unfinished or extremely bugged, extremely plagued with microtransactions or a horribly done Live Service model, etc. I always just ask these people, "Why does it REALLY matter?" Because we don't really NEED representation or inclusion, because I can always relate to a character that's gone through the same struggles I have, and they don't have to be my race at all; or I can sympathize with them because of there background and overall character growth. Ain't gonna lie, see all this makes me really want to just write my own little story and get it out there, I mean...shit, if garbage like we've been getting nowadays can get green lit, published and produced; I don't see why an amatuer like me can't do it too.

@Embrace-The-Dork-Side Жыл бұрын
Self-inserts can work, but they require a level of honest, sometimes brutally honest, introspection that most people simply aren't capable of. I don't think anyone really cares if the character is based on you, provided they're flawed and relatable. That's where most self-inserts fail, they're authors can't even see they're own flaws, much less immortalize them in fiction. Thus, we get boring, flawless Mary Sues.

It's sad that the only change that would need to occur in order to erect a large red flag for FF16 being woke, would be for the prince, to instead, be a princess. I've got nothing against women in the media, and until the last few years, I have not been at all put off by them being in the shows/movies I watch. But lately, it's like, as soon as you notice a female portraying a role of power, and/or lead role, it's just a big exasperated sigh of "Oh god.. Not more of this..". I'm not racist or sexist by any stretch of the imagination. But this woke stuff just completely butchers the content of which it's a part of. Especially when so much of the dialog is anti-male. I'm a guy, I don't wanna be directly insulted by the content I'm trying to enjoy..

Unfortunately, I find myself rewatching older anime/movies/western animation, since a grand majority of modern day entertainment is just not enjoyable, a few things here and there that are actually good (Invincible and The Boys come to mind) but overall, it's just not worth your time, if you wanted to get truly brainwashed, might as well fill some bathtub up with soap, stick your head in the water, and stay in there for a bit, as I assume that would be WAAAAAAAAAY less painful than endure some woke, dumb product meant to hate men, or some stupid shit like that.
@sizlax Жыл бұрын
@@ThePeoplesMoai Damn rights. Unfortunately for me, I am not a huge fan of dated content. I got anxiety, and focus issues, so without being visually stimulating, most shows have a hard time keeping my attention. Both those shows you mentioned were great, but far too little and too far between.. Both are supposed to have seasons coming but not until forever from now, and that'll just be a couple days binge watching when they do come. But yea, things are pretty screwed up now; when people can claim that not using their pronouns is 'hate speech', yet a woman can literally state "I hate men, and what they bring into this world" On a TV show, and that is literal hate speech, but no one bats an eyelash.. And beyond the dumb/ignorant dialog, honestly what grinds my gears even more, is when some woman is just endlessly chewing out some dude on a show I'm watching, and he's just full on simping out and apologizing.. It's fucking sickening to watch.. Especially when she's chewing him out for something that she literally just did, and he said nothing about it.. Or when there's other dudes standing around while she's doing this, and acting like it's completely normal.. And if the woke content isn't bad enough, the sex is off the hook.. Like, I don't need to see tits flying around in literally every show I watch.. That's what porn is for.. It's gotten so bad at this point that I've literally become repulsed by them.. I used to like them, but not anymore, thank you modern television.. And then there's the non stop face-mashing, and hallow disposable relationships that take up so much of the watch time. As for anime, I do like some of that as well, but it depends on the mood I'm in. And since I watch Dub animes, not sub, cuz I like to actually understand what they're saying instead of reading the bottom of the screen while they scream a buncha gibberish (effectively gibberish since I can't understand it); The selection is somewhat limited. Erased was a good anime for people that imagine reliving their youth. The promised neverland, was super dark.. I also loved HxH for being a feel good/dark anime. Obviously Naruto is on the list. It was a bit cheesy in the beginning episodes, but it got real dark later on (but not as dark as the promised neverland). Wasn't a fan of onepiece cuz of it's wokeness with all the simps, and abusive female characters. How bout you, what animes are you into, or would you recommend?

It never ceases to amaze me that with the internet and literal decades worth of information about the subtle nuances of a character and what he represents, people can miss the mark so completely. Ben Grim's (The Thing) whole element was that he wasn't completely accepted by society BECAUSE of his appearance as a rock monster. He had to work hard to become respected, often suffering in silence at peoples intolerance and not giving them further reasons to distrust him. The root problem with "woke" characters is that the authors have come to write to characters and not to themes. What do I mean by that? A character is a player in any particular story. Think "All the World's a Stage" by Shakespear. But what role should each character play is determined by its themes. And each of the characters should represent a different viewpoint of those themes. The problem with a lot of "woke" characters is that they aren't presenting as any particular embodiment of the themes. They simply have a vague moral code and that's it.

If you would have told a kid version of me in the 90's that things would be the way they currently are now: I wouldn't have believed you and gone back to watching "X-Men the Animated Series". The story of mutants was universally relatable. They touched on difficult topics yet in captivating ways. (That's what MARVEL is to me) Media abstractly taught me life lessons, touched on difficult situations, found intelligent ways to tell stories. So much so that when I've gone back & rewatched them as a adult. I realized how well they told & crafted stories that anyone can enjoy & appreciate them. (Pretty much anything created by Don Bluth or Written by Roald Dahl had such creative range) Growing up in the 90's there was such a wide range of Stories, art styles, topics they touched on, unique Character's, creatures. They embraced the weird, odd, macabre things. I loved how things used to embrace these things, the difficult things. Good stories used to be told, in very creative intelligent ways. Nowadays everything feels or comes off like a cheap cop out, shallow live action version of nonsense. I miss the Era of creativity, of animated series, or use of Practical effects, filming techniques and use of miniatures. Things used to make us utilize our intelligence, tap into parts of the human condition that abstractly connects us to any character no matter what kind of character, creature, specie's, talking object they are. (Just felt like I had to express this) Regardless: I am very greatful I got to grow up throughout the 90s and experience all that came along with that.
