As a former package loader, boxes of all the same size are much easier to load. Having the width be the same is a huge benefit to creating a wall of them inside of a semi trailer. I believe that is the whole idea of those boxes, is to try to reduce the variation in box sizes and make it easier to pack a truck full. A uniform and stable load also helps prevent damage.

This could also be a production cost reduction thing as well. It's only 1/4" a box but saving that little bit of material over a massive amount of boxes made adds up

My husband has worked for USPS for years. It is a huge running machine that is all about efficiency and cost savings. With the new postmaster who came in, even more changes have been made to run the USPS efficiently as possible. As someone else stated uniformity in size etc makes processing and handling the Mail that much easier saving time and money. Cutting a quarter inch from that dimension may also make it less expensive to produce those boxes. I very much doubt it has anything to do with how the boxes are being used by resellers and other shippers.

I just combined the PM shoe boxes to send something long, which are the same size. I recommend, instead of cutting the outside box, to cut the inside box along the edges, just where the overlap is going to be. Then it can squeeze and overlap inside without affecting the outside. Worked like s charm!! I did do one wrap-around tape from top to bottom, vertically, just for a little extra support (in addition to the horizontal taping where the boxes meet). Just did this yesterday to ship a vintage R/C car body. It's nothing more than a piece of Lexan plastic, and a scratched up one at that, but it's crazy how much people pay for them. Sold it to a buyer in Japan for $51 plus he's paying like $30 shipping. Another buyer from Australia wanted to buy one for the same price but the cheapest shipping option was going to be $78. A UPS employee told me a USPS employee told her that Australia isn't accepting packages right now. Haven't been able to confirm this though. But I do know UPS isn't shipping to Australia right now.

As a mercari/postmates driver who does this for a living… please put the item in a box or even a clean trash bag if too big for a regular bag. The item will most likely sit at the buyers doorstep. The buyer didn’t rate you because he was nice and probably perplexed as heck by the bare bones delivery

Yeah, when I had a sale on Mercari local I got a message from Mercari before the driver came with instructions to package the item in a bag or box & label it with address of recipient. Definitely wouldn’t just hand it to the driver with no packaging. Some drivers have multiple packages.

This video showcases why I’m putting a “pause” on my re selling side hustle. 2 of my bedrooms and part of my garage looked like goodwill shelves. I sold my last items and re donated the worthwhile items back to Goodwill. It was a fun year and I made a lot of money but having my rooms cleaned out feels much calmer to my home space. The size change is a cost cutting measure. When I worked in newspaper, when they were trying to figure out how to save money, one of the things they'd do is cut fractions of an inch off the width of the paper. Doesn't make much difference per newspaper, but over the thousands and thousands printed, every day, it adds up quickly. Same deal here, I'm sure.

@@HairyTornado well, they do both, right? They raise the shipping rates twice a year, AND they save money on the boxes they give away for free. When you’re coat cutting, it becomes penny pinching time. And you said it … a penny a box at hundreds of thousands a month … that adds up to a hefty savings for just shaving down on size. If they go newspaper route - which would make sense, as they are also now an operating trying to find every cost cutting measure possible, expect them to trim them down again in the future, or even eliminate a particular size

I use two of the same size boxes and just put them together at the flap area. On the inner box, I cut off the flaps so the box fits nicely inside the flaps of the other. I use the peel and stick on one side to attach to the outside of the inner box and then just tape all the way around a couple times. Then I use my box resizer on the other end to reduce the box down to fit the item inside. Works well and the extra cardboard removed helps reduce the weight of the item.

Hey Josh if you go behind like Publix or behind or the dollar stores and inside the recycling trash cans they are full of boxes and you can cut to the size that you need and just tape the sides together

You can use the same size. We’ve always used the same size boxes to send tennis rackets and guitar controllers. Try sliding the box inside the other box before you unfold them. We actually cut the flaps of the ends of the boxes to support the middle of the racket or the arm of the guitar. It’s a tight fit sometimes but it’ll work. 👍👍

Thanks for the video! Heads up, if you ever have a really stubborn stain on white clothing, try leaving it in the direct sunlight (outside or even inside on a window ledge) and the sun will sometimes "bleach" the stain gone.

I was in the post office the other day and the woman working there made a comment on how they keep shrinking the box sizes and upping the rates. I dont think they did it to stop people from combining boxes, i think its just a cost savings thing on their part. This happens a lot in the grocery store. Package sizes shrink all the time, but its so slight that most people dont notice.

Not sure if someone else commented this but to ship the Wii only in a padded flat rate envelope I use a 1096L box from USPS and then slide that box in the padded flat rate envelope, you should be able to bubble wrap the Wii once or twice before putting it in the 1096L

I literally always use USPS shoeboxes. It’s perfect for putting the Wii, a controller or two and all the wires. On top of that you can usually put the usps box in a poly bag which could save you even more money if you use PirateShip

I’m pretty sure it has to do with costs. It’s always about money reasons when it comes to business not because of how people use their boxes. USPS box change. I used to run distribution for a large company. One thing I can think of for the change in the box size is cost of manufacturing. We used a machine to make our boxes in house and one cost saving method was in labor & materials. In cost evaluation, if there are two items nearly identical (like the two USPS boxes in this example) if there is not an overriding reason to keep the larger of the two boxes I would eliminate or modify to use one or more of the same dimension to reduce waste or scrap. When you think about the thousands of boxes a day they make or have made, that can quickly become a huge cost savings. I think this would be a very high possibility. Thanks for the video. Large FRB, Regional B2, 1092,1095, and Box 7 are all getting small reductions in size. 1095 is now 3-1/8" tall and 1092 is now 2-7/8" tall. Order new 1092's, they'll still fit in eachother.

There is an option that I will probably never use but is around that many don’t realize with the USPS boxes. They sell similar sized boxes to the free ones. Red and blue stripes. Places like Target, Home Depot, Staples I have found them at it the past. Some retail stores and online. Stores you can buy singles if available near you, online multipacks like 20ct. There is a very slightly wider box, but it is also slightly thinner to maybe still make a tight slide. Keep ordering the box that changed, I’ve received older versions before. Sometimes like ten years earlier versions that were located in stock. Also ask at your local branch. They may or may not have a stock. Failing all that, I would probably try a narrow press roller alongside the edges of one side, maybe down the stripes, to press that side inwards

It may be due to delivery, printing and supply issues/costs. If they wanted to stop the franken boxes they could just ban them (🤞🏻 hope they don't). You can use 2 - 1095's or 2 - 1092's together for shipping. Slipping them over each can be done as I have done it many times. I sort of taper the end flaps (cut a triangle off each end of the flaps) to help them slide into the other box with a little squeezing/compression action. I do the same thing with the PM shoe box.

As a USPS employee, I don’t believe combining boxes is a problem. I would think it is a cost cutting measure when producing the box. That small savings will add up over the 1000’s of boxes being manufactured. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Probably they changed the size of the box due to printing efficiencies, too. Their box manufacturer is probably giving them a better pricing to print the same size width. Their box assembly is more efficient if the width is the same, less time setting up equipment.

Contrarian view: how many 1095 boxes does USPS buy in a year? How much LESS material used per box in the new size? My WAG is the new size is based on lower manufacturing cost for millions of units... Liked the drone outro 👍👍

The USPS probably buys hundreds of thousands of these boxes every month and when you're doing that kind of volume your manufacturing costs are already incredibly low. I'd rather they increase the shipping price by a penny for each box instead of decrease in the manufacturing cost by a penny on each box. The cost savings will be exactly the same and we would still have the convenience of being able to easily combine the two boxes.

I'm surprised you didn't box the guitar. Only because just like with any delivery the Uber driver only has to deliver the item to that address and not physically hand it to the buyer. So potentially the guitar could have been sitting in front of that persons door out in the open for a while. Also Is your nail polish remover acetone free? Good to see that Walmart did a one-one substitution. I ordered the deal via the app and by the time I went to pick them up they were "no longer available" and they tried to substitute packs that cost $5.88/pack and they were charging me that price and not the deal!

The flat rate game board box changed sizes beginning of the year and completely changed what can go inside. They used to be 12' wide and now are 11.75" - that 1/4 inch means nothing 12" can fit like standard paper packs, frames, even many board games, which is what the box was intended for. So frustrating. The least they could do is announce the new measurements when ordering supplies.

Most likely it was to cut cost from the manufacturer of their boxes. Going down that small size could save a small amount that translates to millions a year depending how many of those boxes they order.

you can also use a 1097 and a 1095 box, the 1097 box is smaller but should still work.

I have never boxed with the boxes you were talking about. But I have boxed with the 12x12x10s and the 7x7x6s and have never had a big problem with them splitting the only problem is when you get to where they're joined the box together you have to push on one on the inside and with something Sharp like a pair of scissors to get past the joint and then keep sliding I've been selling for 20 years and have never had a major issue. And if you find this a problem just take the one you want smaller and slit the seams so they will fold inward when you push the ends should go right in. My issue is that they got rid of two priority sizes and made them into A and B and now I have to buy boxes to get that size or remake a priority shoebox.

Great news that I found out a couple of months ago after years of selling on Ebay is that UPS takes USPS boxes. All these years I have been looking for plain boxes when a Priority box with a UPS label on it works fine with UPS. This is especially helpful now that UPS is better on their prices than USPS for large and heavy cross country shipments.

It could be the box making machines. Resetting the machines for that tiny increment could be the reason. Those old machines can be very temperamental and the new ones can have software issues. My hubby fixes the machines so that would be my guess. Love your channel so much!

That was my first thought, that it had to do with the manufacturing of the boxes. Anything to streamline production and reduce production costs...

Definitely changed the box to keep people from combining them. But keep in mind, they are a business too and it cuts into their costs if people are using two free boxes vs one. Love the channel and the content brother!

I am Manufacturing Engineer, and when you presented the question this video is named for, I immediately thought it had to do with reducing manufacturing cost. It’s conceivable that they opted to make these boxes the same width so they can manufacture both in the same run instead of serially. Just a thought, love your channel, keep up the good work.
