I have 5 Sharps rifles. Two are original 1874s and three are late '70s repros. I the two originals are in .45/90 & .45/110, the repros are in .45/120, .50/100 & .50/140. The two originals were my great grandfather's, the .50/100 ws my grandpa's and I bought the .45/120 & .50/140 at an estate sale in the early '90s. The .45/90 has put many a deer in the freezer and I took an elk and a moose with the .50/140. I love these big bores and enjoy trying new hand loads with the bullets available these days and seeing just what these classics are capable of.

I would love to own a 50/140, but brass is very difficult to find. I ask Shiloh and they will no longer build a 50/140.

I agree, that's why I got a Cimarron Arms 1863 Cavalry carbine in .50-70. After shooting the .50-70, somehow the .45-70 no longer seems that big of a deal.

Your video saved me hours of dismantling by own gun. Let me explain. I purchased at auction a 20 bore shotgun also made by the same company as your own. I had been unable to get it to fire and suspected a damaged or broken firing pin. Then I happened upon your video…and for the first time realised it had that same safety mechanism. So I took it to the range, switched off the safety as you show in your video and hallelujah…I have a shooter after all. Thanks.

Glad you mentioned the buffalo hunts. It was an absolutely awful endeavor which destroyed the natural food supply for Native Americans in order to force them onto government rations.

The most common cartridge in the original 1874 Sharps was the .44-77 Sharps, which is pretty much dead on for .43 Spanish ballistics. It was fairly close to the .45-70. Larger calibers were seen, but Sharps measured their cartridges by inches, not the actual caliber or powder for most of the larger stuff. So you can see originals in weird calibers like .45 2 1/10 inches like you would find in the 1878 Borchardt Sharps rifle.

I just picked up a shiloh sharps 1874 saddle ring carbine for $1000 gun is like new is this a good deal ? Can I shoot modern 45-70 rounds thru it . Was supposed to be made 1977-78 when Shiloh was still in farmingdale long island

Did you shoot modern 45-70 ammo out of that sharps ? I mean like federal or winchester super x . Not cowboy loads
@denisdegamon82244 ай бұрын
Sure can. Just stay away from the super magnum 4570 loads. They can handle any lever action loads listed in all reloading manuals. ( middle range loads) There are three levels, the older black powder, the tragedy loads, the lever action loads, and then the Ruger no.1 & no.3 category.

@keganje Жыл бұрын
@@Horkres13 If you can find one you want a Shiloh or a C Sharps, both made in Montana, you can still get new ones but will have a waiting period of 1-4 years for it, sometimes you can find a new one on gunbroker, but you will pay a lot for it, well you will pay a lot for it anywhere. I just got a used Shiloh 1874 45-70 a month ago, on gun broker, I love it! If you are on a budget Uberti and Pedersoli make decent ones too, although the wood isn't as nice as the Shiloh's in my opinion. They look new, where a Shiloh's is new but looks old, which is what I wanted.

Sharps rifles have their pluses. Comparing it to its two sisters in the same role, the highwall and roling block All are strong but the highwall is king followed by the sharps. And compared to repeating rifles, you can have higher velocity for the same weight, or lighter with the same velocity. New production I'd buy a sharps since nobody can make a proper highwall copy that cocks the hammer when you open the action like the original
