Contrary to popular belief, holding on to weight isn’t just about a lack of willpower or not exercising enough; even genetics plays just a minor role. There are numerous other factors that influence our weight, including things like our gut microbiome, toxins, mitochondrial function, hormones, and even our social networks. But by applying the principles of Functional Medicine, we can peel back the layers to determine where the focus needs to be for each individual to support and balance their body and help them achieve a healthy weight.
In this episode of my Masterclass series, I am interviewed by my good friend and podcast host, Dhru Purohit, about the eight reasons we can’t lose weight and how to overcome roadblocks in weight loss.
Dhru Purohit is a podcast host, serial entrepreneur, and investor in the health and wellness industry. His podcast, The Dhru Purohit Podcast, is a top 50 global health podcast with over 30 million unique downloads. His interviews focus on the inner workings of the brain and the body and feature the brightest minds in wellness, medicine, and mindset.
This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health and Paleovalley.
Rupa Health is a place where Functional Medicine practitioners can access more than 2,000 specialty lab tests from over 20 labs like DUTCH, Vibrant America, Genova, and Great Plains. You can check out a free, live demo with a Q&A or create an account at RupaHealth.com.

For anyone considering carnivore for long term: it’s a great way to ruin your gut. I did strict carnivore for 5 years. Yes I lost a lot of weight. I felt great. Then, at about the 4 1/2 year mark, I started gaining weight and I didn’t feel so great. My gut, from 5 years of zero fiber, was shot. I developed leaky gut, horrible insomnia, severe depression, intense itchy hives that kept me awake unless I took Benadryl and I gained 15 pounds of belly fat even though I eat no junk, no alcohol, no sugar and take no drugs. It’s been a year and a half since I stopped carnivore, and with the GAPS intro diet and Karen Hurd’s bean protocol I am getting better. My chronic constipation is much better. I sleep better, the itching is gone, and I am eating my homemade fermented foods with every meal. Still have the extra 15 pounds even though I lift weights 3x a week and do a lot of other physical activity. What a nightmare. Thank You Lord that it’s getting better.

I don't know why people complicate things, just eat a proper human diet without processed food. If you eat real food that your body was designed for you'll be fine. There is no obesity problem with animals in nature as they eat natural food, often the same things. Cut out flour, sugar, vegetable seed oils for a start.

While married and going through therapy, I picked up a book that stated on the back cover that women in bad relationships often were 10-20 pounds overweight. They subconsciously felt that they weren’t good looking enough to find someone else so they should just put up with their partner. I told my counselor I’d lost 15 pounds within the last couple of weeks after reading the book. He opened up the book, and I said, no, I just read the back cover.

Carnivore is not for many people. I have use a Low Carb System. To loose weight I cut my Total Carbs down to 65 grams/day, last time I lost exactly 32 lbs in exactly 5 weeks using a medical sliding weight scale. The grams of carbs I did eat were healthy and spread throughout the day. If someone feels like they have gotten to the right weight for them, simply add a few more healthy carbs/day to maintain this weight level

I've heard there are no essential carbs. I've found that eating a carnivore diet is so easy. I eat a variety of animal foods and in the beginning I went through a process of eating a good amount every day for a couple of weeks. As my body was being nourished all cravings were eliminated. I love it. There are different diets that work for people and I think we need to look at what they have in common. It's cutting out the processed foods, sugar and other junk that we were never meant to put into our bodies.

I agree , if you are in your 50s this could be menopause. The drop in estrogen will cause a slower metabolism. Sometimes the thyroid goes hypothyroid in menopause . Recommend check your thyroid. If it is normal consider permanent switch to low carb diet. Eat meat, chicken , fish or tofu, some nuts. Nonstarchy vegetables. Anything that comes in a package has added sugar and will promote weight gain. Also get fasting blood glucose and fasting insulin checked to make sure you aren't prediabetic/ diabetic.

I haven't heard about a at-home insulin test. However, by measuring you sugar you can control insulin. So, If you track you sugar with a glucometer you will able to get an estimation of your insulin response. It should be between 76 and 86 fasting, 1 hour after a meal 140, then 120 at 2 hours and down to 76 to 86 after 3

Great video! I would love to see one on how to manage stress even when the circumstances can’t change. For example: I have an adult daughter with severe health issues that keep her in bed and in a wheelchair and I have a 1 year old. I don’t have any friends nearby. Plus it feels like the end of the world everywhere I look. I’m the midst of all this, how can I lower my bodies response to stressors?
@olivierwhite2451
@olivierwhite2451 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Lucinda, you are incredibly strong for managing this the way you do. I know you are not looking to for advice from stranger but: a very effective tool to manage stress is by CBT, when something happens you literally look on the bright side instead of the darker one. Example: My relationship ended, i am so lonely. The i am so lonely spikes cortisol. Look at the brighter side you would think: My relationship ended, i have a new chance at true love. This last way of thinking causes dopamine instead of cortisol. The bottomline is: You can’t always change what happens to you. But you can change how you experience things. Learning to do this everywhere is tricky but once it clicks you are making every situation better instead of worse. And that starts to add up pretty quickly. I wish you strenght

I have spoken to many functional medicine doctors but no one seems to be able to help me with my cronich fatigue, kidney stones and histamine intolerance etc. I have done alot of my own research and have spent many hours trying to figure out what can be the best supplements for me. i obviously am not absorbing everything I need with only my small intestine. i am taking magnesium and b12 which has somewhat improved my condition but I am still not near feeling in optimal health. I live in South Africa but I am sure that if I could contact you you can give me some insight as to how I can prolong my life in a disease free manner. Just for the record, I do not eat any processed food, nor gluten or sugar at all. I am Italian and try to follow our traditional diet as far as [possible with the exclusion of grains. I also grow most of my own vegetables in virgin soil in an organic manner. Should I be taking probiotics or digestive enzymes?
