It helped me to slo-mo film myself attempting several ollies to see what I was doing wrong. I always assumed I wasn't lifting my back foot enough after the pop and it was stopping the board from leveling out, but from the videos I could see my front foot was the problem and I was only sliding it a few inches--this video is exactly what I needed.

I have a major tip for anyone still struggling. I used to not be able to get my back wheel off the ground at all and it was mainly all because I didn't pop hard enough (due to me being scared to pop hard for some reason and that could of gone alot easier if I was already comfortable on my board) and I also did the foot drag motion somewhat but I only dragged it up a little or bearly at all. I also had the timing all wrong because I kind of took it like steps (pop, drag, land) but really its just supposed to be all at one motion. I finally got my ollies off the ground after getting educated about them and really understanding the proper way to do them. It wasn't just that but it took me a lot of practice and I mean alot like 3 hours a day straight. PRACTICE IS VERY IMPORTANT TRUST ME IT PAYS OFF AND I LEARNED THAT. but annyways here is a list of things you should know for your ollies: 1. Bend your knees and use them as a spring when you jump 2. Actually jump while doing the motion 4. Think of the pop as a flick of your foot 5. Think of dragging first, because the pop is really quick and it will happen if you know how to do this correctly. (This works for me when I think about it because it helps me always get the timing right but it doesn't work for everybody) 6. When all 4 wheels are in the air push down the foot that you dragged down to the ground, while lifting the other foot that you popped. 7. Alot of vids or ppl dont mention this but the drag foot placement before you ollie is super important. If you are a bit taller put the foot you drag with closer to the foot you pop with. If you are shorter like me put the foot you drag with further away from the foot you pop with. (BUT MAKE SURE THAT YOUR FOOT YOU USE TO DRAG IS STILL CLOSE TO THE MIDDLE) 8. Land each foot on the bolts 9. If this still doesn't work go back to the simple motions of pop, drag, and land and keep on doing them over and over. The best advice I can give to you is to practice you will get it eventually and be consistent like do it everyday even if you just try 10 a day you will see some improvement in a week. If you have any questions feel free to reply!! Have a good day/night YALL CAN DO THIS I BELEIVE IN YOU🤗

Beginners don’t have the muscles to pop hard enough to get off the ground. Advice for them: always pop as hard as you can when you are practicing. This is the only way to get them off the ground and later get into obstacles. Sliding your foot up more helps but not as much as popping hard.

@@trashyplayz4448 I just recently learned how to do an ollie and what I do is just pop it half way and slide your front foot to the nose, as soon as u pop u let go of your back foot and basically just dont make it touch the board until u land. Sliding your foot makes it by catching the board in mid air. And after you land make sure ur back foot lands around the screws or on top. Might not be as high as u think, but it will help you from popping fully and higher. I hope this helps

@@seanbrownskating For some reason my back foot keeps leaving the tail of my board when I do my ollies. It's hard to explain in words over the internet too. I hope you know what I mean. Like, when I video tape myself doing it, it's like my back foot isn't sticking to the board for some reason and instead it's like "leaving" the board. I land normally and everything but my back foot doesn't stick to the board. I'm also confused by what you mean when you say "jump," because I've heard ollies described before as not really being a jump but an ollie instead. I also feel really awkward and "hunched over" when I go to crouch or bend my knees. I literally don't know the proper way to bend my knees and I know it sounds stupid but I look like the Hunchback of Notre Dame when I go to crouch down to do any trick and it looks super uncomfortable in real life. I've tried to simplify the "crouch" too by just thinking as if I'm sitting down in a chair or doing a squat but then it just looks even more awkward, I don't know how to explain it. It just looks like I'm trying too hard or something or it's super awkward. I'm really confused by what you mean when you say "jump" and what you mean by to jump before you even pop. I thought an ollie is supposed to be something entirely different or unique to a jump. Is it not? Like, if I'm standing without a board and I bend my knees and jump up, that's a jump to me, and I know it sounds super stupid me describing it but I've played basketball my entire life so a jump to me would be like going up for a jump shot or something. An ollie to me is something entirely different. Are you supposed to combine a jump and the ollie together to do an actual "ollie" or what? I sincerely don't get it and my mind is completely puzzled at this point, or it's like I'm trying to input controls into my head that I think are correct and my mind just isn't comprehending anything or something. I feel like I'm trying the wrong way over and over again while tricking my mind into thinking that I'm telling it something different, then my mind just goes into "Error! Error!" mode to where it completely overloads by all of the nonsense I'm feeding it. No wonder, because it probably has no idea what I'm trying to tell it. Sorry.... I know this all sounds stupid.... I feel like my mind is in overload mode or something to where I'm telling it to do something different by trying the same things over and over and over again....which is complete insanity by the way... but I seriously don't know what the problem is. I literally specifically tonight forced myself to put more emphasis on making sure that I'm sliding my foot all the way up the board, but my back foot is still leaving the tail a lot and they basically still look the same on video. It's as if I've told my brain to do something entirely different but in reality though, I'm still doing the same things. It'd be like if I used a green crayon to color something on paper but instead of calling it green, I just make up a completely different name for its color when in reality it's just simply the color green. You can't just call something differently or give it a different name and expect it to spontaneously be different. It doesn't work that way....and I get that..but I feel like that's what's happening though with my ollies lol. Sorry for the long message too. I know it's too long.

Don’t worry man! I’m just starting out ollie-ing and I’m still struggling a little bit, but just try not to get frustrated every time you miss one. Instead of thinking: “i suck/i failed again/I’m horrible at this”, try thinking about what you did wrong, and how to fix it! Telling yourself you suck all the time isn’t good for your confidence, but if you think of every “fail” as working towards a better ollie, you’ll have it down in no time. :)

I know this is an age old video, but this just popped in my recommended. This and Johnny Giger's video on how to ollie really helped me with my ollies and now I can confidently land 3 in a row without falling :]] I still need to adjust the leveling of the board itself but I'm happy with the fact that I can do it in the first place. The biggest tip I got and that's easily applicable is 'Don't overthink it.' I felt like I was failing my ollies because I was worried about the pop, flick, slide instead of just doing it and letting my muscles do the rest. The moment I stopped thinking it as a step by step process but one smooth motion, it gave me the confidence I needed to land them consistently. Good luck guys!! You can do it, I've been skateboarding for months now (mainly cruising) and just recently got into street skating. All it requires is time, practice, commitment and patience. I believe in you all :]

A lot of tutorials I've watched never mentioned some of this little things that help you get your ollie. I'm an absolute beginner who only has the hang of pushing, riding, and maybe kick turns and when I spend hours working on my ollie all I get is nothing or just 1 centimeter off of the ground. I'll keep some of these tips in mind when I try again today and let you know if any of this helped or not :) Update: Definitely helped!!! I just gotta work on the sliding of my foot. Only problem is that I'm borrowing a 30-$40 skateboard from my friend and after a few ollies, the trucks were ruined and the layers in the board already started to split. Now it's made it harder to learn stuff on that board. Looks like I'm gonna have to buy a high quality board a bit sooner than I planned because if I attempt another few ollies, I guarantee that thing's gonna snap. Keep in mind that this is my friend's board, NOT MINE and if I snap it, they'll probably yell at me. I've got a lot of great skate shops around me, but I dunno if I should order one online or pick it up from a shop. My friend said she'd buy one for me as a birthday present, but I don't think she realizes how expensive the board I'm looking for is. She's got a budget of $40> but this complete set is 80-$100. Honestly, I don't want her to buy me a board anyway, It'd only make me feel kinda guilty for the money she may spend on me.
