I feel the same way. I graduated university at the beginning of the pandemic, I was a theatre major, I want to work in film. So I had the same dreams as Pearl. I was financially abused by my ex boyfriend of 7 years, I have no career, piles of debt, and I am back living with my abusive mother who has NPD and her morbidly obese sister who has hallucinations and refuses to take her medication. She also has regular accidents in our shared bathroom. I’ve made plans to end myself multiple times in the past two years living here. I’m definitely capable of the same brutal violence as Pearl at this point … except only against myself. I have a new boyfriend and some hope of moving out soon. But when I thought I was doomed to remain here as my mom’s emotional punching bag, maid, and my aunt’s palliative care nurse for the rest of their lives, I wanted nothing more than to see my own blood spilled everywhere. I hated myself for ending up back here reliving childhood trauma, but worse this time. I didn’t even want a peaceful quiet end, I wanted to tear myself apart as much as possible until the moment I succumbed, I wanted to see my insides all over the floor. That’s how much I hated myself for ending up trapped here again. I’m trying to have hope, and to constantly think about how much my friends and boyfriend love me. I don’t want to put them through that. But I still fantasize about violently destroying myself it’s like I have this obsessive blood lust, but it’s for my own blood. I’m planning on symbolically killing off all the parts of myself I hate and all the parts of my slept that my mother’s narcissism has caused to rot. I might start going by my middle name because most of the times I hear my first name it’s being yelled in anger. I hate it, I hate the weak and broken person it represents for me now. It scares me how much I relate to Pearl.

One thing I love about pearl so much is west's use of colour for visual story telling. The juxtaposition between the greens and reds reflect the shift between pearl's mental states and her proximity to her hopes in the film. Green calls to mind the emerald city from the wizard of oz, it's a fantasy and an illusion, and we most often see this colour when pearl is hopeful, rebelling, or following her emotions. Red is on the opposite on the of colour wheel, it's a reminder of the reality, and we most see it when she is far from her goals or whenever she makes a mistake.

@@_LozFromOz I disagree with both you... First of all, the projectionist literally does tell her, straight up, that she's scaring him. Secondly, with Mitzy, I don't think she got the part at all. She wasn't the only blonde at the audition. Most likely it's purposely supposed to be ambiguous, but I believe she really didn't but Pearl was too far gone that she wanted to believe she had. I think that the "old people" sex scenes in X are necessary... Because, intentionally or not, they hold the viewer accountable for the ease and comfort in which we watch all of the young, gorgeous actors in almost complete nude engaging in sexual acts. I wouldn't even say that they are a graphic depiction - as iirc the scene is mostly in the dark and from a birds eye view angle, whereas we focus on the young people making a porn movie for a decent portion of the film. This is including jenna ortega, which before this movie has mostly been cast in the roles of very young girls and seen as a kid (obviously bc shes a child star). Imo, it's not just for shock value, or as a gross-out, it's saying something like this is what real people do. Everyone, not just the young, famous actors and actresses we constantly see naked on screen and have become used to seeing, but also those outside of the microscopic lens of hollywood. Even murderous, violent and crazy farm elders.

Pearl has exhibited sociopathic traits most of her life, from animal cruelty, to torturing her father. She enjoys watching Theda, because Theda is powerful, strong, independent - everything Pearl is not. Pearl doesn’t ration out her dreams, to make small things come true, but instead sees herself as deserving of more, to the point that another’s life is worth less than her happiness - even if that life belongs her only friend. Pearl exhibits a lot of the traits of Borderline Personality Disorder and Sociopathy. She is naive, but not naive to the point where she can’t murder someone who doesn’t do what she wants. She falls into bed for words, but the moment that is pulled away, that life ceases to have value for her. She wants more than fame, she wants escape, and not a realistic escape, but the fantasy of one.

"Pearl" is BPD on steroids. The desire for love and acceptance, the fear of abandonment, the hyper-sensitivity to people's mood changes, those bursts of violence after being triggered - and the deep regret over them -, all of it makes the movie a dramaturgical reading of the condition, in my opinion. In her monologue, what Pearl expresses is that she feels fundamentally, irreparably broken, that she can never be happy like other people, which is how many people who suffer from BPD also feel like.

I strongly disagree with your overview of X. I believe the same character traits she had in Pearl carry over to X, in just a more matured and evolved way. She still hates that she was never able to escape the farm, to live her life and make use of her youth and now a woman who reminds her of herself (and obviously played by the same actor) actually making some progress and breaking the mold Pearl had to follow this sparking that old flame of murder back

Though Pearl is quite one dimensional in X I personally loved how brutal she was and how we didn't get to know why until later. It elevates X the second and third watch later. Her using people in disturbing ways and killing them stems from Howard being physically unable to satisfy her. It even gives some depth to Howard. We can only assume what he's feeling but I think it's safe to assume that he feels like he's failing her again since he left for the war. He can't be there for her in a way she needs so he covers up her murders and sticks by her because that's just what spouses did back then. They stuck by even in hard times, it's very indicative of their time. It also shows how it stems back to her hatred of feeling rejected and disregarded for her wants and desires. Howard can't satisfy her for the risk of dying but even though she knows that she needs his verbal reassurance that he still desires her. Rewatching X after Pearl, I feel still makes Pearl sympathetic because she's lost her beauty and her dreams and made the best out of what she had and still can't even fully be with her husband because her life is again entrenched in failure and hopelessness. When I rewatched X and it's the swamp scene where Bobby-Lynne tells her "It ain't my fault you didn't live your life the way you wanted to" makes me feel for Pearl. She wasn't able to live the life she wanted to because no one accepted her for who she was and now she has a physical reminder of a beautiful blonde woman telling her she is indeed still a failure. Pearl is jealous of the group and not because they can have sex and flaunt what they got. But because they're happy and youthful in times where their choices are deemed as less sinful. Such a great thought provoking film.

A wonderful analysis! Pearl almost rots the idea of Classical Hollywood Cinema into thinking “well this is supposed to be a slasher, but we are feeling for our protagonist” and slowly pulls back revealing its true and ugly self. It even ends with the stereotypical technicolor ending “oh you are home, but clearly I’m mad.” I saw both X and Pearl in theaters and cannot wait for MaXXXine to come out to finish the trilogy. Great work bringing up some topics that aren’t brought up as much in typical reviews or essays of this film. Well done!

And then she crushed one of her eggs in the barn loft, but that is a one of the triad signs of developing serial killers, hurting animals. At the same time it's the cycle of life and that in itself can be horror, the way one creature eats or is fed to another for sustenance. Farming itself is raising animals to eat them for food, but horrific what happens to the animals.

i appreciate this analysis and how much work was put into it but i think X deserves a bit more credit in it's characters and deaths... i feel that the quick disposal of the characters in X helps the audience understand pearl and her husband a bit more only after watching Pearl (less patience, not as much to hide, more acceptance of their violent nature). like you said, I think X does suffer from the depth of character development and study that Pearl brings since X's importance is to be a middle in a larger story. The same could be said for people who saw X first then saw Pearl! anyway great video keep up the work!! an analysis of how men in horror vs how women in horror write in violence would be really interesting and beneficial to understand your point more!

That’s a fair point and there’s certainly an interesting arc for Howard and Pearl in X as you’ve mentioned. I think that the rotting pig is a symbol of her sanity slowly decaying and in the end it's accepted the way it is. It's implied that Howard is as bloodthirsty as she is, since he went off to war even though he didn't have to. It would be really nice to see an additional movie that shows what was happening between the moment he was reunited with Pearl and the beginning of X.

Where pearl really shines is the fact that while most horrors I’ve encountered deal with either cold blooded psychopaths or social repression exclusively, Pearl finds a way to assemble both and pair them delicately without the film feeling bloated or overly long. It’s polarising for audiences because on the one hand, pearl deeply suffers from a torrid and repressive social climate, along with a miserable and abnormal upbringing. We warm to her because she latches onto her dreams to help her rise above it. On the other hand, she has an incredible lack of sensitivity to violence as we see from the first scene in the film, which continues throughout. I think the film is a masterpiece because we’re left Conflicted. Pearl is a psychopath, but a tragic victim simultaneously. She held onto her dreams to delay the inevitable violent rampage building inside of her and when they began to crumble, she completely collapsed and embraced her dark side

I fell in love with this movie the first time I watched it. I wasn't a fan of "X" either, but the backstory explains it. I have watched "Pearl" several times and I cry every time. I don't see it as horror, but as strong drama. The moment she gets told "no" at the audition, just... breaks your heart. And what is both scary and sad, is the ending. An ending that tells the viewer that her dream will never come true. Not even one of her dreams. Pearl is just a misunderstood girl with a hard life. And despite her attempts to escape from the severe ossification, she remains on the farm... So sad and creepy.

Pearl is a tragedy and I ended up loving her mother's character by the end. It was kind of satisfying seeing her prediction of Pearls future come true after hear death. Her mother is physically and emotionally strong. She's forced into the laborious work of both a father like chopping wood /fixing stuff, while also doing all the traditional female labor like cleaning and cooking. The dresses Pearl plays with are her mothers. She too was once young with dreams and ambitious. But she ended up with a vegetable husband and an ungrateful daughter afraid to end up miserable like her mother. The mother did everything society told her she should for the "American dream" as an immigrant and she lost everything. But she never gave up her responsibilities as a caretaker. She had to be both the bad cop and good cop in everything. I like how the movie showed how hard it is for a woman no matter what. You can do all the right things and end up hollow like Pearls mom. Or you can be rebellious and a go getter like Pearl and still be taken advantage of / never enough.

i personally don’t think you can compare X to Pearl, and i don’t think that’s the point of either films. X is still a really good movie, even if it isn’t like Pearl. i do have big sympathy for Pearl as a character, but she’s still a straight up dangerous person who’s first thought is violence when something isn’t going her way (not saying she’s a bad person for it, it’s actually incredibly relatable besides the murder part for a lot of people). I think it makes a lot a lot of sense as to why the violence is so “masculine” and showy in X. Pearl has been hurt so much that she no longer has emotional ties to the violence she commits. it has become a crutch for her for when things aren’t going her way. she isn’t getting caught or reprimanded for her bad behavior anymore, in fact, her husband SUPPORTS it. even though she murdered her whole family and his sister. that in and of itself is a metaphor.

My whole life was nothing but bullying, insecurities, and constant doubt. My family constantly tells me to change and be tough, but the truth is that I'm not a tough person, I'm a sweetheart. My insecurities were caused by my dad because he kept making jokes about my weight. The bullying came from my sister. She bullied me because she doesn't accept me for who I am. I DEEPLY resent my family for these reasons because they don't understand me. I rather be in a place where people are less judgemental and understanding, that's why I'm so desperate for stardom because I want to escape a life that I didn't ask for. I'M A FUCKING STAR. This movie came out in an era where poor media literacy is at an all times high , no she's not just an insecure girl with mommy issues, it's about a raw portrayal of generational failure .
