Just about every sporting good store or home improvement retailer sells BBQ smokers, grills and backyard cooking accessories these days. Most have multiple blue tooth temperature devices to attach to your cooking vessel, which monitor cook temps via a smart device. However, if you don't have a probe port on your grill or smoker, you're stuck with placing the wires under the door, which is not the best idea when cooking BBQ.
Since adding BBQ tech to my grill and BBQ life in 2012, I realized that the probe ports that allow you to access the wall of your cooking vessel are really hard to find.
Probe Ports CURRENTLY ON SALE for $16.00. It has been the best priced outlet to buy for two years: primitivepits.c...

They are also called cord grips. Electrical supply stores carry them. You could use a 7/8 step bit to drill the hole. You could also drill and tap to 7/8" pipe thread and skip the locknut. I'm an electrician.

FYI: The port you are showing is called a Cable-Gland, you can get them at Amazon, the M16 size will fit through 1/4" thick steel: . The plastic inserts though will melt & fuse into a clump, so just replace with silicone tubing segments: , cutting the tube segment to length & make multiple tight angled slices down 1/2 of it with an exacto knife (that matches how the plastic one is sort of made) and viola, you get 5-ports for about $3.00 each (I installed 4 of them on my smoker, 2 on each end)!!! I insert a copper nail in ports not being used & there is no smoke leak at all. Check out my smoker I finished building in August < www.smokingmeatforums.com/threads/new-member-new-build.290812/ >

Really helpful comment here. I'll probably just just my vents but if I ever need to spend money on something I don't need this will save me some cash.

Cable gland, yep. Altho the inserts on some, like this one, are high temp nylon or similar material that doesn't melt at pit temps. I've been using one for a couple years on my Weber kettle at smoking temps and searing temps with no issues. Great tubing hack tho!

Thanks for these vids man! I know a lot of the material, but your way of telling a story is great. Keep up the work and more people will come. I think there was a delay in your videos that caused youtube to crap on you. Again thanks!

Hello! Thank you for the great video! Is this is M16 or M20? Can you tell me what temperature it can withstand?

So, how does that material handle changes in temperature? How long does it last? I'm in WI so it will get crazy hot and cold.

So with a big smokestack venting the pit, I'm not sure i understand the need to spend $20 to close up a tiny hole in the side for a temperature probe. Or i can just stuff a piece of tin foil in the hole after I run the wires thru it. Am I missing something?

Any update on these probes? The claw doesn't melt from the heat?

I've had no issues with mine on my Weber kettle from smoking temps to searing temps. Just depends what material that insert is made from. The ones you find at electrical supply stores may not be built for those temps.

Great video as usual! Wondering if they make those probe ports longer for Insulated smokers?
@Quetorials

Sean Murray if you grab a threaded pipe from Home Depot/lows at the length you need then you could get through if you have the drill bits to poke through. How big of a wall with insulation?
@sfmgolf
@sfmgolf 5 жыл бұрын
It’s about 2” wall to wall, I think?

Sean Murray add a small piece of threaded 1/2” pipe. You should be able to buy them already threaded at a plumbing supply shop

Thanks for the great videos! I just purchased an offset smoker and would love to buy one of these. I thought I’d ask if it fits through 1/4” steel?

Just wondering what is the difference between this and a simple hole in the side of the grill?
@Quetorials
@Quetorials 4 жыл бұрын
Good question. A simple hole in the side of the grill will leak smoke and heat out. The probe port closes around the wire with a few simple twists of the top cap so no leaking.

Need HELP! The problem for most grill owners is solved. For those of us who only want to attach a thermometer probe to their grill or oven, needed is a heat resistant clip that will hold a thermometer grip in place! My chef alarm would be useful but the grips supplied just don't fit tightly to the rack. Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated.

You won’t want to hear my suggestion lol. Try to wean yourself off needing more than a pin thermometer. We have to learn to cook with instincts like our mama
