I experienced this challenge of 'choosing hard' this weekend. Going into a cool new thrift store as I was passing through the town and I found a beautiful wool navy pencil skirt with a side pleated (instead of a slit). As much as I love the piece (and am still thinking about it 3 days later), I put it back because it is a fantasy self piece that won't get the wear it deserves. I tend to wear skirts in the late spring and summer, and I have a vintage red pencil skirt that I love - but it's also wool, same shape - and navy floral crepe culottes that I would 'lose out' on wears in I brought that navy skirt into my closet. So I appreciated the beauty of the skirt, but as Alyssa said before, we can appreciate beautiful things without having to own them!

Food for thought, ladies ❤ I have culled my YT subscriptions substantially. I do not enjoy videos of people buying excessive amounts of clothing, whether new or secondhand or household goods, etc. Thank you for your honesty and quality content.

Thank you so much ladies! This was such a great lesson--choosing hard instead of easy. I love how you related this to other areas of life, like cooking; the difference between making a meal as opposed to getting take out. I will definitely apply this idea of choosing hard dopamine as opposed to easy dopamine with my wardrobe. Do you find that the 'high' of choosing the hard dopamine can be just as good, or longer lasting than the high from the easy dopamine?

14:19 on the contrary, when I’m not feeling well, and I have to work, I’ll go above and beyond. I’ll wear a dress or an awesome outfit, do more makeup and try to compensate for my physical state by looking cute which helps me feel better mentally.

❤ hard over easy- great way to see it. I do project 333 every season. That challenge got me from over 250 items in my year round closet to 48 currently (not counting coats or accessories which also got decluttered). In the process I started to pay full price for the items I actually needed- and I paid attention to how they feel which meant the natural fibres that were in the things I always reached for. Surprise 😂 I bought the exact right colours and fit instead of the compromise clothes from the sale racks or second hand stores. Too many things were wrong on one point that meant I didn’t reach for them and I decluttered them but took time to think why. I’m spending less now and buying much better. I thought I was too poor to buy the really perfect for me clothes. It does take practice and hard thinking. No shortcuts in the process. I’m 5 years in the process and still learning.

For me I think about it as impulse vs effort , intentional vs not so good habitual, distraction vs engagement .

This was so timely, and led me to a personal aha moment about my style choices! During the early part of COVID, I had been looking ways to work on my style, and found an online style group that you paid a yearly fee, and this included style lessons on line, a Facebook group, a shopping guide for each season, and monthly calendars. It was a wonderful distraction from how hard life was then, and it really fuelled my creativity in the beginning! And then I started to slowly become aware of how waiting for the shopping guide and ordering things was definitely leading to the cheap dopamine, even though the creator encouraged us to shop our closets, and I certainly did that for many items. I became aware of just how many things I had purchased, and knew that wasn’t in line with my values, or my style preferences for a classic wardrobe with pieces that lasted for years. This fall, my greatest excitement has been styling a brown suede jacket that my husband gave me 15 years ago that I became bored with, but now gives me so much joy! Choosing hard definitely leads to more lasting happiness and contentment with my style, thank you for this!

I think this is soo good! I have really choose the hard dopamine as I signed up for the Max 5 challenge that the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation has going right now. I am only allowed to buy 5 new produced pieces of cloths in the next 365 days. I have no idea how this is going to work for me. But I am going to try to do all the hard work you talk about. And as my wardrobe is small I know I use all the pieces allready BUT I have never done the work of putting new outfits together with different assessories! I have belts, scarfs etc that I very seldon wear. I think I have a lot of figuring out to stay a solid year with so few percheses. But if I do the hard work of really work through my wardrobe with everything I think I can make it! What do you think??? Lots of love from Sweden 🇸🇪

I love this idea of only 5 pieces. I may do this: Only 5 in 2025!!

I think sometimes choosing hard is also not decluttering! Wondering if a video on problematic decluttering would be good? Would love to hear more of choosing hard in general.

This was such an educational episode. Thank you. I think It's important to be gentle with ourselves on our personal style journey as we learn what works and what doesn't. Knowing in advance that we are going to have fails is freeing. When we experiment, we open up ourselves to being more creative. Over the past few years I've learned through trial-and-error how many pieces that work for others in their lifestyles and body shape don't work for me and that's okay. For instance I never wear blazers. I bought 1 black one thinking it was a wardrobe essential and never could get it to work Even though it fit me perfectly. We're battling the fears of looking outdated, Frumpy, Older, Not stylish. Somehow buying something new makes us feel more current and chic. Instead I'm really embracing what looks best on me and forgetting what the gurus say are essentials. Staying off of social media and avoiding nfluencers and people hauling clothing has been a game changer for me. Second hand shopping Continues to be my best bet for finding quality pieces that work for me and requires me to be mindful in my purchases.

It's an interesting framing which I suspect won't catch on too broadly because that word 'hard' carries a big load of associations in the culture. What it sounded to me is that you are speaking about intentionality here. The dopamine is the same chemical in the body, however it is generated. But the choosing--the crafting of an experience we intend, rather than being caught in an unconscious or unwholesome feedback loop--makes sense.

I appreciate your content, ladies! Especially Christina's relatable comment of "I have too many clothes....to wear the same thing over again" Yay!😊❤ While listening, I am purging soon to be unworn Winter outerwear (...moving from Midwest to Southwest US!). 😊❤

I try to refocus and avoid second hand shops. I have gotten to where that’s about the only place I shop. I will exercise, take a run or long walk but I still right down things I WANT in my wardrobe, not that I necessarily need. Last week, I decided to go and look for gray button down I had been wanting.I found 2 in men’s section. I couldn’t make up my mind so I walked around looking at other things. I checked out blue jeans (my biggest weakness) I found a pair I loved and tried on and loved an expensive brand so it was a really good deal ha!I ended up putting both shirts back and getting jeans, which I did not need and a small cross bag that was animal print, that I did not need. The dopamine kicked in and I was excited but it’s not what I went for 😊🤷♀️🤦🏼♀️

This past season my version of choosing ‘hard’ was to commit to switching up my footwear and accessories and not go easy on sticking to old familiar and comfortable options. I enjoyed rotating through belts, scarves, bags and jewellery. It has been very satisfying.

Thank you ladies for opening up this topic. I expect to fall into a style rut this autumn/winter as my style uniform has been a t-shirt, a pair of jeans and a jumper and it's getting a little boring. So getting in front of my wardrobe and trying things on and styling them will be my number one task.
