Guitar layering is an age old trick to create a big guitar sound. There are many guitar layering techniques that employ the haas effect. When there is slight imperfection in the matching of two or more guitar parts the magic happens. That's how to make guitars sound huge. But there are a number of ways to achieve that effects. Done properly, that is how to make guitars sound wider. I compare a number of methods from copy and pasting to recording multiple takes.

Adding a bit of a phase effect on the clean of the right prior to sending to amp is a good trick also… especially if you want to play and sound good right away

Just stumbled across ur channel. Glad i did..like ur style. A question for u..what levels shud u record electric guitar..? Doing a quick google search it says -18 to -12 db..some say -6db. Whats ur take? Thanks

Glad you found me. Welcome. And thank you. I talk about that in one of my videos. I use a term “safely in the green”. Modern interfaces have a lot of dynamic range so you can have good latitude up and down. Never clip of course but there is no specific level. A good solid green means enough level and you’ll be good to go….hope that helps!

How about letting Melodyne (or something like Izotope VocalDoubler) generate the second track, ever tried that? It's a method of adding the "human variation" factor digitally. Adding phase inversion could also be helpful.

So I actually use Melodyne to do this. You can use something like ReaTune with a delay where you allow ReaTune to alter the pitch to a very slight degree with just a bit of delay on it. Otherwise I use Melodyne to actually randomize the pitch and timing, and it's every bit as good as a real track. I do the same when I only have one vocal track to work with (because the vocalist was a pain). Anyways, great tips from you as always!

Ha! that's funny. Thanks for your tip. I was thinking about the De-tune method but sometimes my videos get to complicated. The randomize trick with Melodyne sounds interesting. I'll have to check it out. thanks for the tip!!

@@LonelyRocker It works like a charm. You do have to control the % of adjustment allowed, but for sure play around with it. Honestly I have tracks that I have mixed that no one would ever know I know only had one single vocal track or guitar track. It doesn't sound like autotune either, because you are just shifting what was naturally done. I remember getting one track finished and the singer said "man I could have sworn I only did one take of that, guess not". Best of luck in your melodyne journey. :)

Double tracking is really nice but dont you have to be a super tight player ? Otherwise the amount of editing to get every strum in at the same time or every little note to be synchronized be a pain in the butt ?

Well striving to be a better player and knowing your parts well when recording is a goal all players should strive for. For double tracking you don’t need to be sample accurate. In fact, the slight differences are what makes it sound so good. But you do need to know your parts well. The results are great if you can pull it off.

@@LonelyRocker yes knowing your parts well is very important but in case you're not in sync with everything which is almost impossible to achieve, you can edit the audio , in fact I think theres a lot of producers that do need to edit the audio other wise it creates some weird phasing effect , no?

Depends on the player. I don't edit my parts much at all. It also depends on how intricate the parts are.

@@LonelyRocker im not really experienced with recording so i dont really know what im doing. im running my guitar into my computer through my scarlett solo, then into some plugins in my daw. Maybe it might be a problem with the way im recording it, as when i play a song, i feel like im playing 100 percent in time, but when i listen back, it sounds pretty shitty

If you just keep pushing and dont give up you will figure it out! Watch lots of videos, read a lot on recording and try to learn around the equipment that you have. There are so many different interfaces, mixers and daws which makes everything just a little different and hard some times. Ive been messing with recording for years, its been taking a very long time and consistent work but I feel I'm finally starting to get things together. You'll figure things out just keep asking question when you get stuck, someone will help or give you some kind of advice. Remember there are a lot of humans in the world and good humans help people in need!
