More driving and less shopping. Seat time will make you faster than anything you will buy on the Internet for your car.

Cool idea shared by a fellow autocrosser: focus on improving at three elements of the course at a time. When you got that pick another three (or two or one if you are still working on the previous ones). The reasoning is you can never make a perfect run in just four attempts, but you can get real good at 3 specific areas on the course during an event and see your times fall.

There is one thing I try to get my students to commit to memory. Under driving is faster than over driving ALWAYS!

@@aroundomaha true to this. There was a 97’ civic on stock suspension running Miata like times at my event yesterday! All about the driver/seat time.

Wow, that was quick, intense, and exciting, yet I was slightly disappointed it was over so soon. Just like.....wait for it.....autocross! ;-)

Like when you finish what felt like an exciting autocross run and see your time. "35 seconds!?!?! That's it?"
@pault1513 жыл бұрын
@@davids.wallens4286 If it was exciting, that is what it was! Whether it was "successful", as in winning or even an improvement, may not be the same thing. I really hate it when I /thought/ I had really killed it, but end up no improvement or even slower. "When you didn't get what you expected, what you actually got was experience."

Some of the best advice I have ever received is to actually slow down, do an intentionally slower run and build up from there focusing on being smooth and putting the car exactly where you want it on the track. Only then start to increase your speed. Another one was to stop yanking the wheel on turn in. Take time to focus on a smooth turn in as you load the outside tires in a controlled manner.

Yes. An an autocross instructor I have found it is a lot easier to teach new folks who are going too slowly than to teach new folks who are trying to set the world on fire. You need to know WHERE to drive first. I have found that drivers who resist the direction to slow down while first learning the sport are the ones that will never be fast. Perhaps they are confusing autocrossing with drifting.

Big fan of the magazine and loved this video. Thanks for posting. Concise advice! Best coaching I received was from Shelly Monfort at an SCCA Evo School. She simply asked me 'What's next?' 5 or 6 times through the run. Helped push me through the course and get better position for the next element.

It's marketing. 8-) The ones who don't think they are slow, they ignore it, but we who know we are feel like they're talking to us. Tell 500 people the stock will go up, 500 that it will go down. Then for the half where you were "right", tell half the next stock will go up, half down, etc. After six times through you'll have 32 people left who think you're awesome because you've been right six times in a row! Then you take all their money and move to a beach in Brazil. Or in the case of telemarketers, call 1,000,000 people with a pitch....

These were helpful tips indeed via ideal camera positioning. Which cameras do you recommend other than the GoPro?
@Grassrootsmotorsports2 жыл бұрын
We really like the GoPro Hero 10 we have because you can find parts for them at any big box store if you forget anything at home, plus they work really good. The Garmin VIRB Ultra 30 is what we use to use but since they are no longer in production we replaced them with GoPro units.

Autocross tip, Drive it like you stole it
@johnmcmullen456 Жыл бұрын
I have witnessed smooth drivers getting excellent times and "drive it like you stole it" runs with impressive results as well. So many variables involved in autocross beyond driving the correct line, including recognizing the strength & weaknesses of the vehicle, the effects of the drivetrain configuration on handling, and most importantly driver talents.
