My coach was sandbagging me and promoted me to purple the day after I told him I was leaving to train closer to home. I was blue for 7 years and destroying purples at other gyms. It killed my motivation and self-esteem until I was finally free. It's better to be promoted and work on improvement than to be held back too long and spin your wheels.

The best way to get promoted is to go to class at least three days a week and learn. Your instructor knows when you're ready. If you don't trust them then maybe it's not the right place to train. It took me three years for my blue belt and I never complained. I just focused on being the best blue belt and trying not to worry about the promotion. You know after two to three years you will be closer to the next belt any way.

We all cant help but think abiut rank some times but when we just focus on the art it all plays out the way it should. A black belt is just a white belt who never quit!

It’s way better to be the best white belt in the gym than the worst blue belt. Also If you get promoted there should be no question that you deserve the promotion - everyone should be saying “why don’t they promote that guy?” for months.

My #1 goal since starting bjj has been to learn. My second tier goals are basically to build up my defense and escapes trying to become "unpunishable". Getting submissions against bigger players is a bonus. Surviving a roll with a purple belt is a win. I wouldnt even be upset if I never got promoted...I'm still gonna roll 🤙🏼

Agreed! As as white belt, it took me 9 mos to get my first stripe. After I got it, I decided not to worry about promotions, but to focus more on learning and having fun. My Jiu Jitsu journey has become much more enjoyable since then.

The Scottish Rite has a policy that if you ask for a colored hat you will never get one. I take that mentality to my jiu-jitsu.

Hah i got injured and missed my promotion, all my team mates call me the sandbagger submitter. A few guys came in that were new and one an experienced bluebelt that wanted to roll and i had borrowed a whitebelt because i was using my purple belt at home for stretches during rehab they were very confused until i told them my level. Granted i missed 8 weeks with medial meniscus surgery. I think its fun to be a lower belt and smash besides its fun tapping people out and getting tapped out just like surfing you take your beatings with a big smile. If you arent having fun you are doing it wrong. Been tapped out too many times to count, all good.

Our professor is a little different- you need to campaign to get promoted. Prove/show WHY you deserve a promotion- whether you possess the skills necessary, frequently win tournaments at your current rank, consistently defeat higher ranks within your gym, etc. In the end, he leaves it up to the current group at that rank to decide whether or not you deserve to be promoted to their rank- with him getting the final say obviously.

1) just because it’s in your thoughts doesn’t mean it’s the only or central thought. 2) your professor could also not be paying attention and not care. 3) a clear path to progress is something a professional would provide .

I have been focused on being better at jiu jistu after my first tournament. I think it gave me clarity on my goals and what is realistic. You could be a blue belt getting beat by most white belts or you could be a blue belt that doesn’t have very many white belts working any position on them. I want to be my rank and not just carry it. To me there is no point of having a blue belt if you are struggling with most white belts you come across. Overall though, I am more focused on becoming the best grappler in my weight class, winning tournaments and tapping bigger/stronger opponents.

Very good advice it took me about three years to get my blue belt. Im a little bit of a slow learner but I had an awesome time as a white belt. I never cared about ranks or anything like that. I care about learning new things and keeping in good physical shape. I never understood why people were always such in a rush to get promoted. Take your time and have fun with the sport.

I appreciate the advice and totally agree with the moral of the story but I do know quite a few people in my dojo who are lower rank than I but are better at jiujitsu than I am - they sub me almost every time. The issue is, their schedule means that they go to classes taught by brown belts and not the professors. Belts/stripes are based on skill yes, but they're also political and we all know it. Who cares anyway, it's about the sport not the belts.

I wish there wasn't so much money in gyms anymore the place I learned as a teen had a simple system of u don't get promoted until u can best every belt above u on a regular basis like when I had my blue I couldn't get my purple until I could regularly beat all the purples in best three out of five roll match ups ..it was never bout time never bout how much money u spent it was all how well u mastered and used position guard and holds in a consistent and regular basis ...i am a firm believer that no one should be promoted if they can't regularly beat people wearing a belt above and always only when u beat all next level belts in your gym ...for the past five years I can't even afford to train in most people gyms ......i really don't even know what to do to find work out partners and spareing mates cause I can't afford to hang out where all the martial Arts guys in my town do

If you are fortunate to be at a gym that the owner/coach teaches class then opens the mat up for rolls then walks out every day. Don’t expect to get promoted any time soon.
